Hi everyone, I just have a quick question. I have the older 867 pb, and I just bought a 512mb pc2700 chip although it says i should use pc2100. Would this do any harm. I recently asked my friend and he said there should be no problem, but my girlfriend has a compaq and her's also require 2100, and with the 2700 chip it worked fine but OVERHEATED and then wouldn't go on at all, so she had to send it back to compaq. Thanks.

As far as I know, it shouldnt be a problem. pc2700 is just fater ram, so your powerbook wont be able to take its full advantage.

Generic RAM can cause system instability among other problems. I have seen generic RAM cause a system to overheat before. Some memory is also not backwards compatible, so it can run at slower speeds. Your best bet is to buy memory designed for your system; it's guaranteed to work.

As long as it's decently high quality PC2700 (crucial, for example, is usually pretty good), it should work fine. I imagine if you got some crappy generic stuff off of pricewatch it might mess things up, but that's true of PC2100 as well.

As far as I know (and I am about 90% sure, only because I haven't tried it) DDR ram IS backwards compatible, it will just run at a lower clock speed.

Yes.

Ram that is bought higher then your computer can run it will just run at a slower speed...

As far as I have been told.

No adverse side effects.

I'm using a Crucial 512 MB PC2700 module in my PC2100 iBook G4 without problems.
