So say I want to use my external hd as a time machine backup

Will Time Machine/ or me have to format it?


Or can i still have my old data in there and will time machine just create a folder called "ebayhelp" just for me?


you will wonder, just copy and paste the data on your external HD to your mbp hd but really, it's not my data (it's my sisters we share external hd together) so i don't want her shti on my computer
 
you have to reformat it. you can however make a second partition using Disk Utility in Leopard and use Time Machine on it therefore not deleting your data.
 
I didn't have to format my external hard drive when I experimented with Time Machine.
It simply created a folder and created a disk image inside of that folder.

When I partition my external HD, won't I lose all my data?

Are there multiple macs that you connect to using your time machine?

Not if you use Disk Utility, which can re-partition on the fly without affecting data. However, you don't need to re-partition necessarily, it just stops TM using ALL of your available disk space.

If you don't partition, Time Machine will create its own folder for backup purposes - I have a second folder on my TM drive which contains stuff like backed-up VMWare disks etc. No probs.

Teach me how to do this with pictures please. What is TM?
