does apple TV support dolby digital for movies you were to rip from dvd to mp4

i dont THINK they do, but i was just wondering, i wouldn't mind getting an apple TV and ripping my DVDs to it for easy watching if it would conserve the surround sound track

handbreak or another app...never mind i see the AC3 option in handbreak

And does Apple TV support Dobly Digital over HDMI or do you have to use the optical link?
