I have a question

I am new mac user, I just got iMac 17" 512 MB, superdrive. It is a great machine. Wanted to know if I could burn copy of an outside DVD ( not made using iDVD) using the DVD burner? This DVD I am trying to make a cop of is not copy right protected.

Does anyone know ?
