My iTunes library is currently 1.91 GB. I could easily trim that down by removing the stuff I never listen to. However, I would probably also find myself using an iPod as a FireWire hard drive, so I would use considerably more than 2 GB.
BTW, Bunzi2k4, I scratched and nothing happened :( ;)

10GB would hold all I currently have, but with the rate my collection is growing, I'l need a larger one with in several months(thank you iTMS :p , not that i'm complaining)

the question was "what size iPod would you need to hold ALL your digital music?".
i think the better question would be "...need to hold all your essential digital music?".
i have a large library, but which music would i want to hear often during the week or month?

i have 5.20 gbs of music so i guess that bumps me up to 10gb choice, which is also what i own.
p.s. arn,
is this the poll i suggested we have? or something similar?

I keep wishing for an 80GB iPod (someday.... sigh). I have tons of music, I like to encode at high bitrates, I include some AIFFs, and transfer files when I need an ultra-portable disk. My library is already over 40GB, and I add to it daily, be it iTMS or encoding my CDs.
True, I don't need ALL my music ALL the time, but it'd clear up a lot of hassles that I currently face when updating my iPod. If I could sync the entire playlist rather than manually adding tracks, life would be easier.

Right now I've got 16.12 gigs worth, but that's not even all of my music (still have CDs I haven't ripped). My 30gb should be plenty for now.

I'm encoding my entire music collection (1500 LPs-600 CDs). I'm not quite half way through and I'm at 17 gigs. I think I'm going to need the 40 gig model.
Hoping Apple comes out with a 50 gig model. Then I would be set.
The knowledge that you can take your entire music collection with you where ever you go is mind-boggling! :D

They should do this poll again in a year and see if it has shifted towards higher GB.
Right now 15GB is enough for me, but I am rapidly approaching that limit. (But since I have a 15BG iPod, it will be motivation to delete all the songs I don't like.)

I've not used iTunes for all that long, so I'm still in the process of putting my CD's in. My guess is that my wife & I probably have around 5GB combined, and since most of our tastes overlap, that's what I voted.
Insofar as being able to afford it, that's not an issue for me. What is the issue is if the product is or is not a good value.
I had been thinking that I'd spring for a 5GB iPod if its price point was competitive with how much it would cost me to add a 6-12 CD changer would run for my car, but what gets interesting about all of this is that because of the difference in sampling rates, to compare Oranges to Oranges, a 6CD changer can be viewed as a 6*650MB= ~4GB storage device, and a 10CD changer is a ~6.5GB storage device.
What this means is that if my entire collection can fit onto a 5GB iPod, it can also be ripped and burned onto custom CD's and also fit into a 10CD changer for use in my car.
Guess if I really want one, I'd better start driving less, and walking more :-)

Currently, I'm using only about 10gb of my iPod's 30gb capacity, but I have only ripped about half of my CD collection to date.
I think 30gb is just right for me to last a few years. That is, unless the iTunes store comes to Canada, in which case I could see myself spending big bucks on more music.

the iTunes Registry has 491 users, who's overall average total time is 6.94 days of music. What is that, about 8 gigs? The max is 117 days(!) and the smallest is 2.09 hours.

need a 150 gig ipod to hold all my audio stuff right now. converted my entire music collection to mp3 about a year ago and store it on cds. course you'd never listen to all of it at once, so i just load what i want to my ipod and have about 8 gigs on there.

I've slightly more than 10 GB so the 10 GB isn't quite enough. I can already live with an mp3 CD in the car with 5.8 hours of music, so I think that I could live with a smaller iPod and select playlists.

I only have about 2G of music, but half of that i dont listen to. So a 5G would work for me.

How about less than 2GB? One playlist + my most listened songs (maybe a few other playlists for harder/softer music).
Edit: I don't like to keep all my music on my iPod, since I'll end up running out of room anyways. Plus, I don't listen to it all at once, anyways. Just my most desired songs are fine. (Right now, I'm at <200MB and 5 playlists.)

I'm a bit of a freak, as I would need WAY more than 40 GB of storage space. I record and encode the BBC Essential Mix every week, which is one of the best mix shows in the world - it's a 2-hour program put on by the world's best DJs. After I'm done encoding the mix to MP3 format, it's about 170 MB. Now take that, multiply it by 52 weeks in a year, then take into account that I have all the mixes from 1993-present, and I would need, well, a stupid amount of storage space if I actually wanted to store everything! Oh, and throw in about 60 GB of other miscellaneous MP3s, and all my audio CDs, (if I wanted to encode them), and I'd need about a 190 GB iPod, I'm thinking. When will one of those be released?
Yah, I know, I have way too much music - far too much to ever listen to at once, but it's all about choice!

I'm currently at about 4 Gb, but my library is definately growing. If I had an iPod, or an external FW drive to put the music on, I'd rip a lot more of my CD collection and I'm sure that'd put me well over 10Gb, maybe even over 20.
The problem is that I've got everything on my little powerbook drive, which is running very low on space, so I'm having to make sacrifices. I really need a bigger disk :-(

I need a 20GB already and i still have the old vinyl to import.
I'm holding off importing some key tapes in the vain hope that iTMS might just possibly move out beyond US boundaries.

At this point, I'd need at least 60GB just to hold my current library. I'd say that 80GB would be a nice round number though, for the future. :D

Yah, I don't have any digital music either - just MP3s. :p ;)
Please, tell me more about these analog CDs you seem to have then, as I can't say I've ever seen one of those before - unless you count my Dad's old LPs...

We have a 1st generation 20GB iPod which is used in the car on road trips with a transpod and have it loaded with 12GB of our favorite music only.
Because one really can't mess with the iPod much and drive safely. So "radio station" shuffled playlists really come in handy.
For day to day use I have the latest 40GB iPod that currently holds all my music (21GB) plus backed up files.
So I guess I'm set for room to grow on both as I'm always buying music.

The interesting thing about comparing these two polls, 3 months apart is that it shows that if it is easy, people will use it (or if you build it, they will come), and people will expand their collections to a size that can fit onto the iPod (and even exceed it). Of course, much of the music is "good to have" rather than "need to have".
In the beginning, with my 10GB, I was picking and choosing which songs to rip onto my hard drive into iTunes, but now, I just rip entire CD's, in anticipation of the day when I will upgrade to the 40+ GB PowerPod.

54GB of music in itunes, it took the best part of a year to encode all my cds. Also have 5 or 6GB of talking books and radio shows archived onto DVD. Haven't got round to encoding any of the clasical CDs or the boxes of Vinyl in the attic. I have a 10gb ipod and the same for my wife, I dont feel i need all my tunes on the ipod.

Actually, all CDs are analog. Just apply a needle from your turntable to the disc enjoy the beautiful sounds that commence.
(If you actually try this, you deserve to ruin a CD or two).

The last I calculated, I would need around 11 GB for all of my music to be turned into MP3s. However, I'm sure that a couple of gigs could be left out. I have a decent number of CDs which I haven't touched in years, so I wouldn't miss those too much.
My current iPod (a 10 GB) has only 3 GB filled so far, and several hundred megabytes of that is just backed up material from my computer. That is another great thing about the iPod. I can use it to back up my documents and such.
So for right now, 10 GB is just fine.
