Backup = Sync??

OK, I've been an iPhone user for a year and still puzzled about this. Is the backup operation same as the "Sync" in iTunes? I'm about to upgrade to 2.0 and know I have to completely backup the phone first. Do I just "Sync" everything or is the backup a separate procedure?

long story short. apple needs to fix this as some of our backups take an hour.

Mine used to.
I deleted the existing backups and reset sync history.
Backing up now takes seconds.

Thanks for the pointer to this article. Very helpful. I'll have to check and see if my iTunes has a backup automatically created for my phone.
