View Full Version : Am I the only one who DOES NOT hate AT&T?

I was just sitting at my desk, and I was thinking about how everyone on these forums like to hate AT&T because the don't get good service, and they have dropped calls, etc;

But honestly I can say that I don't hate AT&T. I always have bars and my calls are never dropped. Everywhere I go. (I live on the E. Coast)

So, seriously, what's the big deal with hating on AT&T? Would anything really be better with another company?

I'm with you. I haven't had AT&T for long (about 3 months with a GoPhone, and < 48 hours with the iPhone...), but I get better reception at my home than I ever got with T-Mobile. I'm hoping it stays that way.

And I called my Mom last night, and the call clarity (3G) was better than any cell or cordless phone I've had.

So, seriously, what's the big deal with hating on AT&T? Would anything really be better with another company?

Likely not. There would just be different groups hating or liking their carrier! :D

You're not the only one, you're just the only one who typically takes time to post so. :p

But I agree. If Apple went exclusive with any carrier there would be angry people, if only because 1) there is no carrier that offers perfect reception EVERYWHERE, and 2) there's always some other carrier that offers a better rate plan (or at least appears to).

I moved from T-mobile to AT&T for the iPhone. My new home and work are in terrible T-mobile coverage areas, so I've been happy with the AT&T switch. Aside from initial set-up, I have not contacted AT&T again, so no issues with customer service.

Customer experience will vary depending on where they live vs. coverage area and if they speak with a customer service rep who doesn't know what they are talking about.

Also, people will post to complain/find help more often than just to say "Day 26 of everything is OK with my iPhone and AT&T"

Congrats on your good experience :)

Wow, different outcome then I expected.

I thought there would me more "AT&T Sucks" comments.

I hope they (Apple) keeps AT&T... it would be a mess if they switched carriers.

I'd say AT&T is one of the better providers in Chicago. Yes, the service can be spotty, but they don't nickel and dime me like Verizon or have terrible CS like T-Mobile.

I've used T-Mo, Sprint, VzW, Alltel, and at&t. T-Mo was always unreliable. Sprint was nothing but static. VzW was garbled, when it worked. Alltel worked well, but where I was, you had to put the 10-digit telephone number twice to make a call. AT&T Wireless was the best I used, then Cingular improved the coverage, then at&t mobility is the happiest I've been on any network, expecially when you are one the 850/900 Mhz. network, plus the ease of roaming in places where there is no official coverage and everything works exactly the same, regardless of where I've been, even in Canada.

I've been a proud AT&T wireless customer for 8 years now and kept the service after moving to a new state. Great company, great service and people that say otherwise are full of it...

I've never really had any major issues with AT&T. Sure, I may not always have 3G service inside my apartment, but I never really have less than 3 bars anywhere I go. Voice is always dead on, and EDGE has been reliable with my blackberry for the past few years too (I just switched to an iPhone the Monday after the 3G launched).

The only real problem area I have is driving to work, about half a mile from my office, there's an area that causes a tower handoff and it gets botched and drops my call every time. Not that I'm frequently on the phone while I'm driving by the office, but it's happened enough that I've noticed.

I've always found it funny that my girlfriend complains that my company switched to AT&T about 4-5 years ago from Verizon so she can't call me for free anymore. I suggest that she should switch to AT&T and she says "hell no! Their coverage sucks, they're terrible!"... yet not a week passes that she's not complaining how terrible Verizon's service is and she has dead spots to and from her parents' house a few towns over, it never works in her old apartment, etc.

Coworkers piss and moan to me about how bad AT&T is inside their house (I'm the company's account administrator), yet when I ask if their kids' phones through Verizon or T-Mobile are any better and the answer is always no. Go figure.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and roaming is a breeze as TEG said. It's worked fine for me in the UK, just the same as it works in the states...only WAY more expensive! ;)

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

I have not had any problems with AT&T for the time that I have been with them. Just for reference I started with Bellsouth Mobility which later became Cingluar which of course became AT&T. I'm going on 12 years without changing providers and have been satisfied overall. There have been a few issues between then and now but everything has been resolved in a timely manner and I honestly can find a reason compelling enough to go elsewhere even if the iPhone wasn't a factor.

I don't hate them. I switched from Verizon and in terms of straight phone service, they are probably better (no dropped calls, etc.) Coverage-wise they're roughly the same, just with towers in different places.

But the thing about Verizon that absolutely hated was their attitude that they had to control everything. From the locked-down phones with a horrible generic UI to the nickel-and-diming that added sizable amounts to your monthly bill - I don't miss the "Big Brother" atmosphere at all.

So in those terms, I feel like I've been liberated with AT&T. I have no doubt that even if they'd not turned down the iPhone (which history will show was one of the biggest blunders in wireless corporate history) that they would have ruined the iPhone experience simply by their heavy-handedness.

While AT&T has not been perfect for the few years I've been with them, they have not gone out of their way to earn my disdain the way Sprint did when I was a Sprint customer.

AT&T has been fine.

You have to remember that while every company will have legitimate problems with a few customers, you're not going to hear from the scores of people who have no problems at all -- they'll just be quiet, enjoying their service.

I don't hate AT&T, per say, but I'm no fanboi for them either. In my area (Central US, KS, OK, AR, etc), their coverage is mediocre and their pricing structure is on the higher side - 2nd highest in my region.

I pride myself on being an informed consumer so I did a pretty extensive carrier comparison at the beginning of July - in preparation for the iPhone - and they were about 'middle-of-the-pack-average' overall. Alltell (and, soon, Verizon) has AT&T beat on coverage and Alltel and Sprint beats AT&T on price plans.

I think im a phone-a-holic cuz i care more about the phone sometimes more then the service i have.

I could write a very long list of places AT&T's service is poor during my day.

But, uhm, it would be the exact same list that I would have made last year when I was on T-Mobile.

Some places just have bad coverage, period. I've never seen the need to complain about one carrier over another. I've been equally satisfied with AT&T (1999-2004) and T-Mobile (2004-2008) and now AT&T again (last 2 weeks).

No complaints. We've been customers with the same "company" for over a decade. First it was Cell One, then Cingular, and then of course AT&T. With each successive merging, the quality seems to have improved. For the most part, EDGE coverage in my area is so good that I don't usually even bother switching over to WiFi. I have a Gen 1 iPhone so I can't speak to 3G's coverage, ect.

The iPhone was a natural progression and a no-brainer for me. I'm already on AT&T, not going anywhere, so why not have the (mostly) best phone on the planet?

i dont hate at&t at all. The reason I have barley any bars at my house is because the damn city I live in wouldnt allow any cell phone towers to be built. So once im outside of my neighborhood I get full bars and fast 3g.

I've been with AT&T (well AT&T->Cingular->AT&T) since 1999, and I've generally been happy with it. I'm in Philly, and I get reception on some areas of the subway, even. And AT&T customers are the only people who get reception from the basement our office building.

Sure, I've had problems with them -- was charged twice for an application on my old phone, etc. -- but every time I've called and complained, they've given me credits. In fact, one of their business care representatives claimed he could change my upgrade date from July 23 to the 11th, so I could get my iPhone on the day it came out. Turns out, he did not have authority to do that and I got to the AT&T store (didn't wait in line long) on the 12th and was told they couldn't give me that price. I "pitched a fit" and they gave me a $75 credit. That clinched my decision to get the 16 GB phone. :)

My advice to anyone with AT&T problems is to call them and push the button for "cancel my account." They will do anything within their power to accommodate you, or at least that's been my experience.

Zero coverage at my house in upper Westchester, NY.. Otherwise I have always found the people at the store much nicer than Verizon. I hate verizon for many reasons, but still have to carry one of their phones because of ATT's receptions issues.

well I don't hate them...since I was with cingular for almost 8 years when this whole switch thing took place, and I live in orlando and never had a drop call and always seem to have 4 bars or more. I guess I just been lucky when it comes to my AT&T Reps because they always seem to go out of they way for me.Even when I got the first iphone last year they did everything for me. left the store with a working phone, and they even gave me list of programs to make free ringtones. Safe to say I will probably still be with them 10 years from now.:D

I like AT&T, I get no dropped calls and always have 3G and more than 3 bars.

But lately I have been getting zero bars and no service in my neighborhood. It has not always been like this. I wish AT&T would just fix some towers over here to make 3G what it should be and to give me my bars back.

No complaints. We've been customers with the same "company" for over a decade. First it was Cell One, then Cingular, and then of course AT&T.

I should point out that I used to be with "AT&T Wireless" back in the day. Cingular bought them and eventually took the AT& name for themselves.

So this leads to the question, who was REALLY with AT&T back then...you or me? ;) It's your company, but they got the name from MY company.

I like them as well.

Only hiccup I had was last year when i finally got the 8gb gen1 iphone. My account was off for about 6 hrs. That was not a good NEW ACCT experience.

other than that, i like their web site, no problems. There are some not so smart people working for them, but they are everywhere.

All cell companies are alike, no matter how you slice it. Service is fine for me, and the iphone, well verizon/sprint have nothing on it to this day, IMO.

as far as apple switching to another carrier, they wont. They went with GSM for a reason, namely BETTER BATTERY LIFE.

I switched to AT&T a few days ago from Verizon. I'm loving my iphone and I'm thinking that the 3g data speeds are 80% of time just as fast as EVDO. However, I have had a few voice reception issues already. That's a real shame cause I didn't have a dropped call with VZW is probably 2 years. It had been such a long time, that I forgot it even happens to people.

Oh well, it's worth it for the iphone.

Btw, I like in Manhattan and work in Jersey City (Newport).

I agree... I was a long time Verizon customer and having my iPhone for just a week, I feel like canceling because AT&T's service is so bad.

Everything from voice clarity to bars (or lack there of) to dropped calls. I feel like it's the 1990's again.

And it's not like I am in the middle of nowhere, I am right in the middle of 3G coverage.

Everyone should post where they are from. Because that makes a big difference as to coverage. I live in Orange County, N.Y. and I have both Verizon and At&t. And Verizon is so much better. I get nothing but dropped calls and no service in a lot of places with At&t so I am forced to use my Verizon phone which I hate. It's such a shame because I love my Iphone :(

I live in central NJ. I guess I'm fortunate to live in an area where for the most part, the big three (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint) are about equal in coverage. All of them have 3G in my area.

The real differentiator for me then is service and features.

AT&T for me has been great. The reps are nice and informed, the coverage and sound quality has been good, and I've had no complaints in the year and a half that I've had them.

Sprint is (or rather was) cheap, but they ARE the Wal-Mart of cell carriers. Customer service is clueless and horrible, and they constantly screw up your bill. I was with them for 7 years. The last straw came when their marketing people kept calling me to try and get me to up my text messaging plan. I finally agreed just to get them to stop calling me, and the inept rep proceeded to trash my account, removing my data plan without telling me, removing my old text messaging plan, and then NOT putting on the upgraded plan. Boy, what a surprise I got with my next bill! Never again.

Verizon has good coverage too, but their phones are hampered by that horrid user interface that they insist on making every phone use. What's the point of offering a selection of phones, if they all act essentially the same?! And, if you think 2.0 on the iPhone is slow, try composing a text message using the Verizon UI. iPhone 2.0 will seem lightning fast by comparison.

That, and Verizons people are just pretentious, snarky and condescending. They buy into the hype about suppoedly being the best a little too much.

We do a lot of traveling between here and Fort Walton Bch Florida and we get great reception going down 331 where there's only 2 radio stations... "..your cheating harrrtt" and "...and Jesus said..." but our cell service is fantastic all the way to my parents house.

Same with going to NC to my wife's parents house.

It used to be BellSouth in my area, then Cingular and now AT&T. I liked it when it was BellSouth, then Cingular ruined it. I got rid of Cingular because they told me that I made calls that I know I didn't. I even had proof and even one of their "engineers" told me that I couldn't have made the calls because a few of them were double billed (meaning I was in a call while one was placed - not to be confused with 3-way calling). All I wanted to know was what towers were taking the calls because I knew for a fact where I was one day when I supposedly made two calls at the same time. A lot of the numbers that were on my bill that I didn't make were to Melbourne, Florida which is about 20 miles south of me and my thought was that the calls likely originated from their as well. I wanted them to explain to me how I could make a call from two towers at once and while they were at least 20 miles apart. The lady on the phone from corporate told me "you made the calls" so I finally told her "how much do I owe you, I am canceling my contract right now". It was funny to because she wouldn't give me a figure so I just made a big payment and had them refund me the difference. I just found it so hard to believe that a company can just put stuff on your bill and tell you that you made calls even though you didn't. No one had access to my phone and their own staff verified that my story was true and that I couldn't have made the calls and yet the corporate office had to come back and tell me I was a liar. That's what I call customer service!

My favorite carrier was Sprint! I don't know what happened but when I signed up I was somehow given a huge credit on my account that I drew from for almost 7 month! It was great having one less bill to pay each month! The kicker was when I canceled my contract early to switch to T-Mobile (I just had to get a BlackBerry) and instead of charging me for canceling -- they gave me $50! That was in addition to the $50 I got from referring myself from Nextel to Sprint when I signed up as well. I think I know why Sprint is having such financial woes! They keep giving money away! In a personal note, I did kind of feel a little dirty for not telling them how much free money they had given me. I would also consider switching back to them in the future, their EVDO data service which when I did pay for it was only $15 a month was way faster then 3G and I was able to use it on my laptop.

T-Mobile was cool but EDGE was so slow and they didn't have the iPhone :( Customer service was awesome and they always went the extra mile to make sure you were happy.

Nextel was good to, they had a slightly faster data network then EDGE (at least for me) but their phones were junk! I mean I take care of things so well they look brand new even years later but those Motorola phones were very poorly made. I loved my i830 though, it lasted a long time (8 month maybe?) considering it was made by Motorola but all the paint fell off. You usually don't think of paint falling off but it literally flaked off.

WOW! That was a long post!!!

What I've always wondered about people who say "every time I call customer service....blah blah", is how often do some people have to deal with customer service?? In the 7 years that I have owned a cell phone through two carriers, I have only had to call customer service maybe twice. And one of those was when I was in China trying to figure out how to get roaming turned on. Maybe it's just cause I don't call customer service every time I have a dropped call or something.

You are absolutely spot on. My wife and I have been exclusive VZW customers for 10 years. In recent years, we've been noticing small charges here and there. We never had problems with our digital plans whenever we upgraded, so when it came for an upgrade last month, they wanted to change our plan. The new plan would have added an extra $50 to our bill. Enough was enough. We then switched to AT&T with 2 iPhones and a regular phone while saving an additional $15 dollars as compared to a new VZW plan. Reception is the same and no drop calls in the greater los angeles area.

No hatred towards AT&T here. I have had mobile phone service with Sprint and with Verizon in the past. Each had good and bad points. I am in the Metro Charlotte, NC area.
Having been a Verizon customer for around 5 years of so, I was extremely reluctant about switching my service but the iPhone was too attractive a device.
My plan was to get an iPhone and if the service wasn't up to par, I would return it and stick with Verizon.

I don't know if it's the iPhone itself or AT&T's service but I notice a big improvement in sound quality and I'm also getting service in areas where I never got service before....so far so good. :)

been with AT&T for 8+ years (wow has it been that long already). reps have always been nice to me. almost all the AT&T stores i have been to have been really cool and knowledgeable about plans etc.

at my home there is no 3G coverage (it's weird cuz it's a REALLY small spot that has no 3G coverage) but i'm still happy with it since i use Wi-fi anyway at home.

the only thing i would like is AT&T to lower their pricing for SMS plans. hell all cell companies should give everyone unlimited for $5 imo. :D

At home, I'm in the middle of a "Good" service area according to their map (second best rating), bordering on "Best." That said, I drop calls at least every other day when at home and get a MAXIMUM of 2 bars, usually 1. Doesn't matter whether I'm on 3G, EDGE, or whatever else.

Go about 20 miles west of my house, and there's no coverage whatsoever. Can't even make a 911 call! And this is along major state routes, not even in the middle of nowhere. If you're on the interstate, you'll have a signal... stray more than a mile off the interstate, and you've got no bars, no signal.

AT&T has enormous holes in Virginia, whereas Verizon blankets all but the most rural and remote parts of the state.

I came to the iPhone from Verizon and sincerely wish I never had to switch. That's how much I love the iPhone -- I'm willing to put up with marginal to non-existent service. In the meantime, I'm seriously considering getting a minimal account with Verizon just so I have SOME kind of service when I travel around the state.

(And don't get me wrong, Verizon has plenty of issues of its own. But its network in this area is bar none best-in-class.)

I had pretty good but not great service from the first AT&T. It was a pain dealing with customer service but most of the time I didn't have to. When they sold it to Cingular my service went to hell. it got so bad that I had to walk outside of my house to get a signal and I got no signal at all at work when AT&T had previously worked OK in both locations. I'd call customer service, spend hours waiting to talk to someone and their solution was that I should switch to a Cingular sim card (with a new 2 year contract) and it would work fine again. I had an unlocked phone so that I could see that the local T-mobile signal was strong and unchanged. So it was clear that there was a targeted degradation of service to force former AT&T customers to switch to higher cost Cingular contracts. I waited out the contract rather than pay an early termination fee but I would estimate that fully 2/3 of my calls didn't go through or were dropped for the last year of my contract. The day my contract ended, I switched to T-mobile. They have a strong signal in my area, they are pleasant at customer service and I haven't had any issues with them. As much as I'd love an iphone, I figure that AT&T ripped me off by deliberately degrading contracted service and would not let me out of my contract without the termination fee. Can't see going back to them and rewarding bad behavior.

I've never had a problem with ATT. Granted, my family started under CellularOne which was then taken over by Cingular in our area and then became part of ATT with the purchase by SBC. So far I've had no problems with ATT in my time...

Granted, there have been the times I've been frustrated with the service. It's going to happen. I've cursed out T-Mo as well because they have no service where I work. But ATT so far has been extremely helpful when I have problems and have been good to me.

I don't hate AT&T

I just think their customer service is average at best and their service can be painful at times

Then again, most phone companies are like that
