Making MPGs work on FCP or iMovie?

I have some .MPG files from videos I made using a Sony camera, and I can't get it to have audio on FCP or get it onto iMovie period. Is there any way? I'd love to be able to trim these clips without having to do it on my PC.

It sounds like your videos are multiplexed MPEG-1 (.mpg mux). This means that their audio and video are combined (multiplexed) into a single track. MPEG Streamclip will demux the file into separate audio and video tracks.
