Does anybody think we need better/more smileys? Would you want these smileys on MacRumors??

We're fine with the few we have. What next? Images in signatures?

I avoid all cartoon smilies at all costs to begin with, so I voted no. Although, I'm probably not the best person to ask. (:

No no no no no! The ones on MacRumors are far less hideous than any others I have seen anywhere else. They're, like, all subtle and shizzles.

I would have to boycott all smileys and only use :) :( :o :P no parsed ones if we got silly ones like the ones above. Sorry!

No thanks. Smilies should be as simple and to the point as the current set-up. Too cartoony and they become obnoxious.

I would like a few new ones angel, devil, vomit, ninja, etc that can be easily distinguished from other ones. I don't see the point of having all those suggested smiles since some of them look alike.

BTW, I think it's funny that due to the content of this thread, I saw 2 emoticon ads (1st reading, 2nd replying).

I've always wanted more smilies, cause I feel they help to convey my mood, especially when I think some may misunderstand my tone. But since a friend turned me on to a great smiley site, I'm ok now.

I'm in with the "no"s. And while we're on the subject (we are on the subject, right?) I would still love to see the :apple: "smiley" changed to just an outline of the logo. The full black is just so (and too) eyecatching.

God no, it's one of the reasons I prefer MacRumors to other Forums. Too much clutter otherwise with emoticons that are either larger, more complicated, animated, distracting - bah. Same goes with images in signatures.

The emoticons we currently have are good enough.

MacRumors is a more refined Forum, let's leave it that way. :p ;)

(See I like those emoticons... :))

ABSOLUTELY NOT. I think that the amount of smilies that there is now is more than enough. We do not need more. We have 12 now and people already use them enough to drive me mad sometimes. I am a member at a forum that must have at least 36 smilies and people use them so much that I just can't stand reading half of the posts. There should be a limit of 3 smilies a post in my mind, if anybody uses any more than that then their posts just look childish and are not easy to read.

The one smiley I wish we did have is a suspicious one (something along the lines of o_O but you know, a smiley :p), but beyond that, I think the smileys we have on MR are perfect. Some forums have way too many and it just becomes an eye sore.

I seldom use them and don't find them necessary. Words are far more subtle and I ignore posters who use them excessively since they seldom have anything to say. Kind of "OMG!!!!!!!!:eek::cool::D!!!!!!!" posts. So they act as a kind of filter. So, yeah, more I say.

Dude, we're talking about frickin' emoticons, not technological innovation. Against change? No - but change for the better, not for the worse. If I suggested you paint a giant pink unicorn on your car's trunk and you declined, are you then likewise resistant to change? :p

I agree. Although I use them from time to time (mostly to convey if I'm being sarcastic, poking fun, etc. for clarity) I prefer the concept of conveying my thoughts thorugh actual text as opposed to emoticons. Using a bunch of emoticons all the time seems thoughtless and lazy - I prefer to read posts in which someone has obviously taken time to organize their thoughts and construct a proper statement.

As long as they don't rely on emoticons to provide their post's content, I'm fine. Typing pretty much anything up is a sign that they've put thought into what they want to say as opposed to typing OMG!!!1!!! followed by multiple emoticons. ;)

The Apple Logo smiley was introduced because the ⌥ + ⇧ + K combo doesn't bring up the logo on Windows, or something. It's been angering me ever since. We don't need posts from newbies that end like either of the following:

ZOMG!!!!!1! :apple: are the best!!!!!!!!11

:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::cool:

It's enough to make you want to punch the wall.

We're not against change. It's not broken, so why does it need fixed? The MacRumors forum is a heaven compared with other forums. There's no distraction of masses of smileys (which, to be honest, are mainly overused by people that can't work out how to convey an emotion using their words); there are no images in signatures to get in the way; it's all about the discussion.

And it should stay that way.

I think there's been pretty extensive discussion on this topic, so I'm going to go ahead and close this.

Just as a reminder. Please don't abuse it, but you're certainly welcome to inline smileys from smiley hosting sites such as http://www.my-smileys.de/ (the one I use) if you really want additional choices. So you do have options. Again, please do not make your posts obnoxious, or action will probably be taken.
