Edit...since this seems to be a difficult to find accessory I've modified the topic title to be more of a general thread.
Sites to get this from are lower in the thread.
As of 2:45pm CST 8/1/08
-Apple shows a shipping delay of 6-8 weeks
-JR.com shows it as backordered. (best price)
-Amazon.com has it in stock (third best price, Amazon raised it)
-Buy.com has it in stock (next best price)
See links further down in the thread to the item at those sites.
Ok...anyone else order this car kit from J&R even though it says preoder?
I ordered it from them simply because I can save $30 over the normal $100 price...but I'm wondering why it's a preorder when people on these forums have said they have used this specific model (F8Z183) with the iPhone 3G and that it works.
http://www.jr.com/belkin/pe/BKN_F8Z183/
Also I ordered it over the weekend and got charged for it today...they say they only charge when they ship products. So it should be on the way correct? (could anyone experienced with jr.com give some insight?)
Yeah I contacted them directly to see what they have to say since my order status doesn't say anything about shipment...and the product still says it's a preorder.

yeah I will do that. No word yet from JR though.
The $30 off deal might be a preorder thing though...don't be surprised if it disappears when it starts shipping.

Received this:
Thank you for writing. What you saw on your checking account is an authorization for the amount of your order($74.94). Unfortunately we have not received the Belkin TuneBase in as of yet and we do not have an eta at this time. I will email my buyer to see if he has one and as soon as I get an answer I will email you.
so yeah...they essentially charge your account the full amount even if the product has not shipped. Holds for money on an account is the same fricken thing...all I know is...I can't use that money for anything since it's being held.
So I'm waiting.

Ok they're on sale now....and they still have the $30 discount off the regular $99 price...so I believe it's the cheapest you can get it.
So I'm expecting mine to ship later today.

Crap...my order hasn't changed one bit. Status still says "submitted" and "Total Charged $0". So I expect it won't be filled until they get more in stock.

Update:
My status page still hasn't changed but when I called into their customer service number to cancel my order (I asked for an order status first before I even mentioned wanting to cancel) so I could order from Amazon they said the order shipped today and that I'll be receiving a tracking number tonight. So the website order status isn't exactly accurate.
I did a search of all the sites belkin has listed for selling their products and the only ones that say they have this specific model in stock are
Amazon.com ($91.27)
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8Z183-Ipod-iphone-Tunebase/dp/B001AVSB7M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217442731&sr=1-2
Buy.com ($103.99)
http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-tunebase-fm-for-iphone-or-ipod/q/loc/111/208172868.html
Looks like Amazon is your best bet for getting this hard to find car kit. Everywhere else I tried either just didn't carry the model (nothing but strictly iPod accessories on almost all the sites) or were backordered (JR.com and Apple). (the two Apple stores nearest to me didn't have it)
I did not check sources other than the ones Belkin has listed on their site though...but there are other sites on the web that carry belkin products.
This thing better do everything for the iPhone 3G like people said it does...I'll be pissed it if doesn't (like if it doesn't charge). When I get mine I will post a review in this thread.
edit: It appears Amazon cut the discount a bit...it's now more than Buy.com.

I ended up ordering yesterday from amazon for 91.52 and signed up for a free trial of amazon prime and got a 10.00 gift card for doing that so total with over night shipping came to 85 and change should be here some time today.

Ok received mine. Here's my first (but not complete) impressions.
***I need to make modifications to my case to make it fit properly. This review will not be complete until I do that.***
One thing I didn't think about when I ordered this was the case (Contour Flick) I put on my iPhone...it makes it just slightly wider than the iPhone...enough to where the plastic holder for the iPhone was a bit too snug. I tried the iPod Classic (which is just slightly wider) holder that came with the tunebase and it fit fine. Also the bottom edge of the case interferes a bit with the phone connecting to the Tunebase...I had to really force the phone down onto the connector to get it to pass the music through to the Tunebase. I'm going to try to trim off the bottom edge of the case to make it fit better. There's two small pieces of plastic from the case that stick down below the bottom edge of the phone which make it difficult to connect to the connector.
I think because I could not initially fit the phone down enough to get it to pass the music to the Tunebase...it did not recognize it as a proper accessory, as I got the warning from the iPhone about 3-4 seconds after plugging it in that the accessory was not made for the iPhone.
edit: After trimming the case so that it now fits down all the way on the connector it recognizes it properly as an iPhone 3G accessory. Yes, that means no warning. It says that it's charging off the Tunebase. And second most importantly, music sounds great through it.
I have to return a set of Power Support Crystal Film that I accidentally bought that was the original version not 3G...so I'll be making a trip to my nearest Apple store. That will give me a chance to road test the Tunebase.
As of right now though, I love the Tunebase.
I've attached a couple of pictures of the modifications I had to make to my case. For both pictures I've added lines in Paint Shop Pro to enhance the edges of the case and the iPhone.
The first picture shows how the bottom of the case curves over the edge of the iPhone...this is the edge I had to cut off.
The second picture shows how I cut off the bottom edge of the case just enough so that the bottom of the iPhone is exposed enough to plug in properly to the TuneBase. As a result of this I'm probably going to order one more back from BSE to cover the base better. I had to originally modify the BSE so that the case wouldn't interfere with it when I put the bottom flap of the case over it. Because of the modification to the case though, I can undo some of the modifications to the BSE I made.

Oh maybe I should finish my review.
Sounds great *most of the time*...I noticed some sounds dropping out once or twice...probably just mild interference. Other than that the sound is perfect. You notice a little his from static when music isn't playing but that is quickly covered when any music starts up.
The iPhone 3G works perfectly in the TuneBase
-charges
-plays music through the stereo
-securely holds the iPhone 3G.
-When a call comes in it fades the music out properly. It also hands off to bluetooth hands-free devices just fine. I did not test without the bluetooth hands-free device though.
One slight thing I did notice was when I took turns hard it would tilt the holder (not the arm) a little bit (no more than 1/8 -1/4 of an inch)...forcing me to readjust it. Not really annoying though...pretty minor.
I will try to get some pics of my installation.

I wanted to buy this also but someone on a thread I read posted that this fm transmitter could affect the internals on your iPhone 3G and I definitely don't want that to happen. Anyone else heard this?

"Could" affect the internals?
Has someone said it hurts the phone? Because I haven't noticed anything negative with this device. It works perfectly. When the phone is properly seated NO warning is given on the phone saying that the Tunebase is incompatible with the iPhone 3G.
Nothing I have seen makes it look like my TuneBase is negatively affecting my iPhone 3G in any way.
What thread did you read? Can you post the link?

If it is used without a bluetooth headset I can understand that since it is supposed to route the sound through your speakers...thus going over FM which anyone near enough can pickup if they are on the right frequency. This shouldn't be an issue if you use a bluetooth headset (I use a Plantronics bluetooth earpiece) since it mutes audio going through the bottom connector if you use one. This will be the same for any fm transmitter that uses the car stereo speakers to output the audio from your calls. Whatever you hear through your car stereo speakers will be exactly what anyone can hear that is near and on the right frequency. There's no way to stop that and still use fm to get audio through your stereo.
I couldn't tell you if it mutes fm if you use the audio out connector on the bottom, since I don't have a connector for that on my truck's stereo. I imagine it would solely use the audio out connector if you do use it though...no point in using fm if that's the case.

Why?
If you know exactly what you are getting into when you get it and you know how to avoid it, what's the problem?
Sounds like you just shouldn't be using any FM transmitter if you're that scared about your privacy.

Like I said...a bluetooth headset will route all sound for your calls through the headset. The iPhone does this if you pair up a bluetooth headset with it. Very simple and effective way to ensure your privacy.
Even if you don't use a headset, nothing you say will be sent over FM...thus the only thing people can hear over FM is whoever is on the other end of the call.

i seen this same belkin fm transmitter jr.com now for like $69. I am debating in getting this or a Pioneer in dash unit like this one:

Yeah I got my tunebase from jr.com for that price. Fast shipment once they actually got them in.
That Pioneer solution would definitely take care of the privacy issue (if you don't plan on using a bluetooth headset) since it would be a direct connection to the head unit (the iPhone doesn't support music via bluetooth, only phone calls). I can't tell you if that head unit is iPhone 3G compatible though...I have no experience with it.

I bought the Belkin F8Z183 Tunebase at Walmart yesterday. Realized right off it wouldn't work with the clear case I bought w/my iPhone 3G so took that off. When I did the scan, it came up with E 5.1 or IP and some numbers. Never could get it to work correctly. I had on my Motorola bluetooth headset, so at first thought maybe that was a problem....from reading posts, it should not be.
Anyone have a clue what I might be doing wrong? Or why this isn't working for me? Apparently it works for everyone else so???

Hello, I'm thinking about buying this transmitter. I'm wondering if it has an "auto shut off" feature like some other transmitters when there is no music? My current transmitter has this and it's very annoying. Any help from someone who has used this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

While this unit was not actually intended for the iPhone 3G, it does work well enough to use it in most cases. I have been using the Belkin Tunebase FM with my iPhone 3G since September 23, 2008. This has been my experience...
First of all, the phone doesn't fit properly in the Tunebase out of the box. The 3G phone is thinner (front to back) than the original iPhone (1G), so when trying to use the "iPhone" attachment for the Tunebase, the 3G will teeter backwards because it's not resting on anything behind it. I solved this by placing a couple of small adhesive pads on the Tunebase which would cushion the back of the iPhone 3G (These are small spongy pads about 2-3mm thick that can often be found adhered to the inner corners of kitchen cabinet doors or drawers to help them shut quietly). The "iPhone" attachment is the right width for the 3G--IF you are NOT keeping the iPhone 3G in a protective case all the time. The naked phone will fit using the pads on the front of the Tunebase.
So, if you DO keep your iPhone 3G in a case, you have a different fitting situation to deal with. I recently purchased the Seidio Innocase II, and my iPhone 3G is no longer "naked". As it provides some "thickness" to the phone, I no longer need the adhesive pads on the Tunebase to make my phone fit properly front-to-back. Like the earlier poster shows in their photos, i had to slice off excess cushion on the bottom corners of my case so that the phone would make a proper connection when docked in the Tunebase. BUT NOW, the problem is the WIDTH of the "iPhone" attachment on the Tunebase. It is not wide enough to hold my phone. So currently i am docking the phone (still in its case) without any side-to-side support to hold it. If i have to stop suddenly or turn sharply, i would expect the phone to fall off of the Tunebase. I am still trying to come up with a way to have some side-to-side stabilization for my phone while using the Belkin Tunebase FM. I am open to suggestions, or I will post again if I come up with a solution on my own.
I was wrong in stating that the phone with case will not fit in the iPhone attachment provided. Initially it looked that way, but I went ahead and pushed the phone on down through it with no trouble. It's a good snug fit, but not difficult to remove. For me, this issue is now resolved.
The sound quality of the Belkin Tunebase FM is ok if you have a totally empty radio station to use. The Tunebase will work better if you lower your antenna, but it may not be necessary. Expect that you will need to turn your stereo volume up quite higher than usual to get adequate volume from the iPhone's music or podcasts.
Incidentally, the Belkin Tunebase FM works ok in my Honda CR-V, but works terribly in my wife's Toyota Camry. Her car has a built-in hidden antenna that you cannot raise or lower. That is the only reason I can guess for the difference in performance between our vehicles. But I can use the Tunebase in her car only as a charger.
As others have mentioned, you will get a message pop-up on the phone from time to time when it is docked in the Tunebase, recommending that you switch to airplane mode. I see this message only 1 or 2 times per month, so it isn't a big deal. You can simply decline, and the unit will work as it should. I am going on 4 months now, and despite this supposed "incompatibility", it has caused no damage to my iPhone 3G.
I simply wanted a car unit for my iPhone 3G, that would have a cigarette-lighter-mount cradle, a charger, and an FM transmitter. Devices that offer these 3 features in one unit for the 3G are rare, and none of them get very good reviews.
Probably the most widely-sold unit for this purpose is the PDO CarFM, also branded generically as the "ALLKIT". I purchased this after my newly-cased phone would no longer fit in my Belkin Tunebase FM. It has adjustable sizing, it charges, and it tunes through an FM station in my car. There are a few things I like about it, but not enough to keep using it. It does not store radio stations in memory, so you have to tune them in the unit each time you start the car. Also it's annoying to hook up the little charger plug at the bottom each time it's used. With the Tunebase, you simply pop the phone or iPod in the dock and you're ready. You can do it with one hand without looking at it--not so with the PDO CarFM, as you will need 2 hands to get set up. Also, when you turn off your engine, the music keeps playing on the phone. With the Tunebase, when you turn off the engine, the music stops. In the PDO's favor I will say that it does seem to have better sound quality than the Belkin Tunebase. However, ease of use is important to me, and I am sending it back and attempting to modify the Tunebase to use instead.
Believe me, I have researched these units at length, and although it is far from perfect for iPhone 3G users, the Belkin Tunebase FM has been the best solution for me so far. But I will keep looking for a better one...

I received my Belkin F8Z183 today and was disappointed to figure out--and later learn--that this unit does NOT work with the newer IPHONE--the 3G model--only the initial IPHONE. Everywhere you look on the internet it is advertised as being compatible with 3G---except: on the Belkin website!!! I found this out by calling Belkin directly and was told that this does NOT work with the 3G IPHONE----they make another unit that does work, but it does not come with the cradle to hold the phone--which is one of the reasons I wanted the Tunecast---I have an earlier model that works great with my IPod Nano and thought it would be a great car holder/charger and way to play tunes from my IPhone through my car stereo. Be advised: this unit does NOT work with 3G IPHONE!!!

Works perfectly with my iPhone 3G (specifically the model number I mentioned)...I have been using it in my truck since I posted this thread. I've only had one or two instances (out of hundreds of times I've plugged it in) where I got the "this accessory does not work with the iphone message" and that was due to me not quite plugging it in all the way. Once seated properly it works like a charm. There must be no case or anything at the bottom of the phone that prevents it from sitting all the way down in the cradle...the bottom of the phone must contact the base of the cradle otherwise you will get a warning message and it will appear not to work.
I have since stopped using the FM transmitter part and instead, directly hook it up to the CD Head Unit on my Stereo. Works great and sounds even better.
Belkin does not list a version that is supposed to work with the iPhone but this specific model number DOES. Read the Belkin site all you like but this model DOES WORK and you receive no warning messages if the phone is seated correctly. I wouldn't put that in the title of this thread if it were not true.
As for how my iPhone 3G fits in the cradle...it uses the iPod Classic adapter I believe...that allows me to put it in there snugly even with my Contour Flick case on it.
I will swear on my mother's grave that mine works if the phone is fully seated in the cradle. I'll be testing it with my 3GS as soon as I can get one from AT&T.
edit: Having said that...that only applies if Belkin hasn't done something stupid like change the circuitry in the model I mentioned without changing the model number. If they did that they yes this model might not work...and in that case I would not recommend using this. Given that it's identical circuitry as mine (or at least works exactly the same way) I guarantee you will have no problems. I hate Belkin for not making it clear that this does (or at least did) work with the iPhone 3G, but my TuneBase works perfectly for what I need.
edit 2: and I've used it both jailbroken and non-jailbroken...works either way. Had my iPhone 3G since July 14th of 2008...no ill effects from using the TuneBase FM.

Tested my 3GS...while it works perfectly for playing music and charging (again, no incompatibility messages, just like my 3G)...I'm suspecting that the FM transmitter in this is interfering with GPS and the Compass in my 3GS. It seems to have a very difficult time tracking via GPS and the compass frequently tells me it's getting interference. Going to do some more tests to see if it is indeed interfering.
I am contemplating replacing this with the newer TuneBase Direct which is just a straight power/music mount (also has handsfree...but that would be bypassed by my bluetooth headset).

I think I would probably recommend this one anyway as it is made for the 3G/3GS...and they do have an equivalent FM version for those who need the FM transmitter. It's not as seamless as the Tunebase FM I originally posted about as it requires a hookup to the headphone jack for music/handsfree (dock is only a charger), but it should do the trick and still allow for the use of a case I believe.
