View Full Version : Airport Extreme - "Self-Assigned IP Address."

I've had my Apple Airport Extreme since June, but recently in the past two weeks, I've been getting disconnected. I am able to connect to the Internet using my iPhone 3G off of my Airport Extreme, but I am not able to connect to the Internet off of my iMac. I don't get it. I try "Assist Me" and "Diagnostics," and nothing works! I am going nuts. I am a computer geek, but the fact that I can't figure this out is driving me nuts. I try to reboot my modem, router, and computer, but my iMac is still not connecting. Usually, I have to wait between 30 minutes to an hour before my computer reconnects by itself, but this is so annoying. My Airport Extreme light is green, my modem is working just fine, but whenever I try to connect to the computer, the Airport Extreme light in "Diagnostics" is green, Airport Settings is green, but my Network Setting turns yellow/orange with a "Self-Assign IP Address" and a note saying that my Internet may or may not work. Has anyone else have this problem? I searched for answers on this forum, but everyone else seem to be clueless about this problem too, but that was back in early January. Anyone figured out the problem yet?

Few quick questions.
First, is the airport using the newest most up to date firmware?
Second, is the airport acting as your router, or is it router->airport->*wireless fun*?
If it is router->airport, is the airport set to give out it's own IP addresses or is it set to just be an Access Point and you are getting your IP address from the router.

I had a similar problem with my Netgear router. I got it to work by clicking on the Advanced options in Network settings and setting the IP address to a manual one - my router is 192.168.0.1 so I set the mac to 192.168.0.3 (my ipod touch was 192.168.0.2 so it wouldn't let me use that).
That seemed to fix it - it was driving me nuts the way the connection would just be lost for no reason and nothing would seem to get it back.
Hope that helps.

I had that exact same problem with my airport extreme.
you have to go to the airport utility and do a manual setup.
then go to the internet tab...
check to make sure "connection sharing" says share a public ip address.
that should fix any problems.

Thanks, I will definitely try this out. This is the first time I am eager for the Internet to go out on me, haha. I'll give another update.

Well, my Internet is down, and I'm on my iPhone to surf on macrumors.com for more answers because it still will not connect after trying the different suggested methods. Everytime I am in 'network diagnostics' it says I may have entered a wrong password or network name or chosen the wrong type of wireless security of out of my base range, which I highly doubt. I cant through my airport utility to do a manual setup because it won't even detect my airport extreme

Since I couldn't find answers here, I found a thread on Apple.com that will help explain my situation a lil' clearer, so hopefully, someone can help me figure this out.
