I have a MacBook and I got it with the basic 160GB Hard Drive. I was wondering which is the best 320GB 5400RPM Laptop Drive to buy?

This (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152111) one is very well reviewed on NewEgg.

Got that one for my MacBook. Works perfectly.

Was it difficult to swap the old HDD with the new one?

Was it difficult to swap the old HDD with the new one? It's about as hard as using a Torx driver.

There's been a lot of threads on this the past few days. Here's the Apple guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_13inch_HardDrive_DIY.pdf) on how to replace hard drives. You can also find videos on youtube, but the guide should be sufficient. It's not difficult.

you can also buy an exterlal MyBook passport portable HDD from Western digital with a 320 gig HDD inside. Take the case apart wich is easy. Pull out the Hitachi 320 gig HDD and replace the internal HDD with the new one. then put the 160 gig HDD in the Mybook case and use a program to copy over all your HDD to the new one. after its all said and done you have an internal 320GB drive and an external 160GB HDD.

Only downside is that your new 320GB is now void of any warranty..

Best thing to do is to buy a 320GB hard drive on its own, and get a 3-year warranty (Western Digital, Samsung, all have 3-year)...and buy a $10-$20 enclosure..Same concept, just often times cheaper, and better warranty.

I just bought a WD 320GB HD for my MacBook, and a MacAlly USB Enclosure...

No, it was very easy to do and it's pretty hard to do something wrong.

Hey gang, good thread. I'm kind of settled on a BlancBook 2.4, can't decide whether to pay Apple $100 to install a 250gb drive for me, or pay Newegg $99 for a 320gb and do it myself. I've never done one before, but it doesn't look like rocket science, and I have replaced ram. Also, does this void the Apple warranty in any way? I want to get AppleCare, will that affect it?
Thanks guys.

Replacing your HDD will void your apple care but doing the RAM wont.

If you do decide to replace your internal drive **DO NOT FORGET TO PUT THE METAL TAB CADDY BACK ON**** Had a couple of people come to me and say that they cant change there drive out again because they forgot to put the metal tab caddy back then i had to take there macbook appart to get the HDD out.

But yes i would get apple to do it

XD :)

Thanks, Slyone. Good to know, and I guess that's the kicker. I'll max out a 250, and by then, they should have 2 TB drives ready for MacBooks, right? :D

Yeah slyone is good at this stuff (and voiding warranties too):D

Hows the temperature coming?

Replacing your HDD does not void your warranty; your warranty will only be voided if you break something--same if you use it and break it…

True but apple will find out unless you put your old drive back in for when/if you send it in for apple care.

Temp going good check out the thread

Take a look at the selection of the new 7200rpm, 16MB buffer, 320GB notebook hard drives at OWC. I used to have a 5400rpm hard drive and the performance is dramatically improved with a 7200rpm hard drive. Of course, these new drives are a bit more expensive than a 5400rpm 320GB drive. But if you want top speed, max capacity, go for a 7200rpm HD.

OWC has a good reputation and is recommended by Macrumors, I've bought from them without any problems. Here is the link:

Yes, OWC has a very good reputation in the australian mac community too.

Hope everyone has a great day!! :D:D:D
