Out of curiosity Of those of you who have recieved replacment iPhones from the Genius bar that came in the little white refurb packaging and not the retail packaging, please post you device type and model number. You can find this info in Settings -> General -> About. I am trying to see if they are handing out new phones or refurbished ones.

I was told that they arent refurbs... that they just drop the pretty packaging after a while (which makes sense)...

Well I just had an advanced replacement iPhone 3G get sent to me overnight, it should be here tomorrow or friday (since its so late here on the east coast) but the apple lady told me that there are no 3G iPhone refurbs in circulation at this moment so it will be a new phone but in a "service package" which means no extras just the phone.

Just got my 3rd replacement iphone3g. Model number MB048LL

Just got a new one today due to light leaking around the bezel.
Model #- MB499LL

quick question. my replacement phone screen feels different its not as slick and seems to get alot more finger prints.alsothe text/icons looks a little more fuzzy. will apple store take this one back?

Thanks everyone for posting model numbers. Trying to see if there is a certain model number that is relegated to the replacements.

mine is a replacement from the genius bar, dont know what model i had before, but this one is an MB046LL. its better quality than the first one i had.

I got a replacement last weekend and it was a *45 from a OEM looking white box that was sealed.

Well the replacement I got yesterday is a week 30 so I doubt it's a referb.

MB046LL

little white box.

bought my first one on 7/12 (MB702LL/A)-
dropped it from 1.5 feet, screen shattered
http://www.rescg.com/iPhone/Broken_iPhone_3g_Glass.html

that was on 7/23 took it to the apple store on 7/25 paid $200 and had to give them the shattered phone - they "sold" me my "new one"
I have noticed that my "new" phones battery life is about double from the first one and it gets better reception as well.:apple:
not real happy about that - however with people you love you tend to look the other way with stuff like that.

Little White Box....

is a refurbished unit. They lied to me too in the last generation iPhone, They should come in a box that is similar to the new box but smaller. It should have the iPhone on the cover like the old one and be sealed. Call them out on their lies they did that to me before. Poor business practice.

They lied to me before with that too. The first phone they handed me out of the box like that had a big scratch across the apple logo and the hard back on the original iphone. They don't drop it. It just came out they should give you a new phone. They are giving you a phone that someone else probably handed in the day before. Idk that but its a used refurbished replacement.

The little box can contain either a refurbed unit or a totally new unit. Once the Genius opens the box and sees the serial number of the replacement, they can tell you if it's new or refurbed.

If you do the swap via mail, the little box will have an iPhone on the cover (like the retail box). You get to keep it.

If you do the swap at the Genius Bar, the little box will be white and have no graphics on it. And they keep it/reuse it.

When Apple refurbs iPods/iPhones, they replace the exterior. The only way I can think you got a scratched one was that another Genius had monkeyed around with that phone in the Genius Room.

Customer returns are never reused at the store. When a product is returned for whatever reason, it's sent away for refurbing before it comes back to the store for refuse. You should never get "someone's phone from yesterday".

iPhone 3G White 16GB replacement
Model: MB499LL
Version: 2.0 (5A345)
Modem Firmware: 01.45.00

FWIW, I had my black 16GB replaced at the Genius Bar and it came in fully shrink-wrapped retail packaging just like when I originally bought it. (Original was a week 28, new one was week 29)

There are no refurbs yet.
The service phones in the little white boxes are NEW.
These phones have been sent to the apple stores for replacement uses.
If and when there are refurbs available to be given out as service phones they will have a refurb model number plain and simple.

im on my 3rd iphone 3G the first one i bought in January and its model number was MB702LL/A 2 months after i bought it the speaker phone and all speakers stopped working so they replaced it with a "new" one and now i updated to 3.1 and it bricked my iPhone so they replaced that one with MB046LL which is my currant phone screen feels different though.
