Just and update for those that thought the new version of itunes would speed up the back up.

No.

It does not. Sadly I am well into an hour for my current "sync" and it is still not done yet.

(yes you can cancel that but every so often I like a full back up.)

Here's hoping 7.7.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 fixes this.

So click the little X at the end of the "Backing up" window. Jesus, not that hard. Why whine about something you can stop from even taking place? It will sync your phone like normal after you click the X.

And if you like to do it every so often do it before you go to bed!

Jesus. Read my post. I know I can do this already. So why don't you try reading instead of being a rude little commenter?

So click the little X at the end of the "Backing up" window.

That's a workaround NOT a solution and it leaves you without a full back up.

Why whine about something you can stop from even taking place?

What part of not backing up if you do this are you not getting?

And if you like to do it every so often do it before you go to bed!

Because I ditched my landline and do not want to leave my phone on the other side of the house while I sleep.

Here's some more info on disabling the backups.

Note: This leaves you in a bad state if you have to back up:

The other problem is that if you ever cancel a backup (by clicking the 'x' next to the progress bar), it apparently corrupts the existing backup -- so if you do then go to restore your iPhone, the backup won't be usable --

and a GUI app to do it:

Interesting.

If you download say 3 or 4 apps and then sync. Does the back up stage go fast as well?

(Also, how many apps would you say you have in total? I have 40 or so.)

Not true. All my apps are on my computer and backups take forever.

I upgraded to 7.7.1 last night, did a Sync and got stuck in the hour+ long backup. I was about 90% through, and heard the email notification noise, so I picked it up and slid to unlock to check my email.... :D

Of course, it was "Slide to Cancel Sync", and I screwed myself  I gave up and went to bed.

When I am doing a back up sync, I cross my fingers and say "No one call me" over and over for over an hour!

Same here...i went through 3 backup attempts last night. Each time I needed to access my phone for something before the almost 2 hr backup was complete. So annoying.

there was a thread awhile back about turning off the crash reports would speed up the backup to 5min or less? wished i had bookmarked it when i saw it at work.

i read in another thread a great way to not get disturbed during a backup is by turning on the Airplane mode before you sync.

I'm trying to find the thread too. The one I read covers the iphone for the seatle times?

+ good tip on airplane mode!

I am beginning to wonder if some of us are suffering from a corrupted sparse image*

*is that the format our back ups are saved in?

Heck, I got a 11GB a free space on a 16GB iPhone and it took well over 2 hours to backup and at the end it gave me an error messsage.

I've got 10 apps on my 8GB iPhone and it only takes 2-5 mins to backup. Using iTunes 7.7.1 and 10.5.4.

I usually 'reboot' my phone every week... will that help? Reboot your phone and try backup again?
