Hi There,

Can I use my third generation iPod dock with an iPhone 3G? Is a third generation iPod dock the same as what Apple describe as a universal dock? I have seen a dock adapter on the Apple store web page which will fit the iPhone 3G when installed in a universal dock. I just don’t know if the dock I have is. It looks like the photo below.

The iPhone should fit. Except in rare cases, the dock is just a straight-through extender of the iPod cable connected. The only worry would be the lack of physical support, which may cause you to break the phone and/or dock if the iPhone rocks too much on that dock connector. The iPod 3G dock is designed for just the iPod 3G, and does not support the universal inserts. It wasn't until the mini-II or nano was released that the universal dock was released, and Apple stopped including docks with each new iPod.

i'm not sure what version my ipod doc is, but its at least 2 years old and not made for either iphone. I bought the adapter plate from apple (3 pack for $9 is a rip-off btw), but it fits the phone fine. i have an invisible shield on there and i don't have any problems. i think its sturdy enough.
