Retain Contacts but turn off synching...

So I've heard the constant contact synching causes a lot of the lag with loading contacts etc. I'd like to turn off synching as long as it leaves my contacts as they are currently. Right now when I turn off synching it clears out all my contacts, replacing them when I turn it on again. Anyone know how to avoid this?

The only way I can think of is to turn it off, leave it off, and then sync your phone with your computer so it puts the contacts back on your phone. Cheers.
