Nice capture Doylem. I like the wash of light coming down across the front of the frame onto the first turbine - get that one to a stock service. Wind / renewable energy folks would love that shot.

Thanks for the comments about my wind turbine shot (and, yes, Fuzzy14, these are the ones you see from the motorway near Tebay). It was just a 'grabbed' shot, when the sun came out for a few seconds... a good enough reason to have the camera in the car even when the weather looks unpromising. Round here it can change very quickly...

My Doylem you're up early! I really enjoyed that windmill shot too... it had the feeling of a tilt-shift image without the narrow focus.

This pic is of my recent trip to the Greek Islands... it's my picture of the day though I took it almost 2 months ago. :o
(Click for larger pic ... it's a screen cap as I didn't want to upload the entire 3MB image)

I'm considering Photoshopping that wire out on the top left... it's not too distracting but once I focus on it, it's hard to ignore.

Since it's still July here in Memphis, TN, I'm going to post this to July AND to August.

The sunflowers are blooming at a local farm. This is an experiment that I had read about and figured I would try it out today. I was using my wife's backup D80 and her 50/1.8. I actually held the lens backwards up to the camera setting the aperture and focus manually. Sure does make for some nice macro work, it just is hard to focus with the wind moving things and making sure no light comes into the sensor.

Comments are welcome.

You beat me to it Doylem this month :)

Taken just outside the city walls of my town in Italy. These old men love to watch the world go by, especially any ladies ;)

The walls date back from 400 BC, when the town was a hub for Etruscan markets. I bet 'watchers' have been sitting there ever since...

I like the way you've got down, for a rabbit's-eye-view (always a good idea with pets... and kids). But, apart from that, there's no feeling of capturing your pet looking its best; the rabbit looks pretty comatose. :)

Maybe get some eye-contact. Wave a carrot at him (her?)...

Great down to earth view of the Rabbit. BTW, I love the "sky hook". :D

Not sure if you're into the whole Photoshop editing of photos, but consider a shot with the lease coming out of the clouds. ('god' unleashes the giant rabbit) The lease could easily be removed from the photo using PS, there is some good background to work with. I've done this with my dog where I removed the leash and the photo shows him "running freely".

These little critters are about 1cm (1/2 inch) wide/long - well they're pretty small and difficult to photo in the wild as they pause in one place for a very short time. Some of them are blue on the inside but move around more often so my shots are not quite so good. Oh well might as well include a blue one.

Great location... and that cloud is spectacular. An opportunity, IMO, to get a simple, graphic, elemental shot of sea, cloud, cliff and lighthouse. The composition, as is, seems too cluttered. The eye is distracted by the foreground. Just my opinion, of course... ;)

Nice! That's a Lycaeides sp., and I'd have to get a better look to see if it's a L. melissa (Orange-bordered blue) or L. argyrognomon (Northern blue). I can definitely vouch for the hard part of the pics, these are some very scurry little critters!

Slightly larger than 1cm (about 2cm), but they still were difficult to shoot in a garden on a breezy day.

Nice to see that the d700 handles noise VERY well. I am a bit confused, though, as to why you even shot at ISO 3200 since you were stopped down to f/8 and at 1/200th... You're shooting indoors in natural light with a 50 1.4, why not take advantage of that? ISO is usually the LAST thing I want to touch.

Heres a picture I took the other night at a fireworks display.
I had just inherited a Canon EOS 400D and a set on lenses from my late uncle. Im new to the SLR scene so basically I had to go from using basic point and shoot cameras to using a complex SLR within a day! So I'm pretty pleased with this picture.

shutter: 2 seconds (This allowed me to capture multiple explosions)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 34mm
ISO:100

Any tips on settings would be gladly accepted as Im new to this.

Just playing some pinball. I have decided to challenge myself after reading an article on Liam Frankland (http://liamfrankland.com/blog/) who has a project called "this and that" where he shoots everything at 50mm F/1.8. The idea behind the project began as as a way to recapture his "photographic spirit" as he has progressed more towards landscape photography. Basically, when he was younger, he would shoot anything and everything without giving much thought to what he was shooting, and now, by setting some rules (50mm, F/1.8), this style of photography now has a creative purpose. He chose 50mm and F/1.8 because, and I agree, he feels it's his most creative lens as it "reveals elements that are very unique to photography."

This inspired me to try this out. I feel my story is very similar too, as I used to shoot just anything without a thought, only really to document where I was or what I was doing. Then I fell in love with landscape photograph where I could express my love for the outdoors in a creative way... So now it's time to give those shots a purpose again by trying something new! Thanks to DC Mag for the article

I want to post a photo using photobucket instead of my usual attachment that ends up as a thumbnail you have to click, but I'm afraid that the size will force windows to be huge. Is there a way to limit how large the picture appears?
Thanks

You may be able to edit the photo at Photobucket so that it's 765 pixels (horizontally for horizontal photos) x whatever number of pixels (from 400 to 550 pixel) that is proportional to 765 pixels. I never store full size photos at any place on the Internet. What I do is to scale then with Graphic Converter, since this application has a real nice scaler. I enter the horizontal pixels as mentioned above, and GC automatically matches things up to maintain the photo's proportions. I save the photos for "Web" display at approximately 100KB size, and then upload to photobucket. If the photos are stolen online, the thief is stealing a somewhat low-grade copy of the original. When I post them here, they look like these ones in size.

It's good to set ourselves some limits; it can really help to focus our attention. One lens, maybe, or shooting the same thing over and over again (Monet painted the same haystack 27 times ). I keep going back to this little boat, moored on the lake, with the Langdale Pikes as a distinctive shape in the background. I go to see what the light will do to what is now a very familiar spot; it's always different...

Don't know what I'm gonna do with hundreds of pix of the same boat, but it's a really good exercise for me... :)

Hi Seenew, on first glimpse it looks like the perfect wedding photo but when I looked more closely I think the bride's position is awkward; I could be wrong be she looks like she's straining a little to reach for the kiss.

IMHO, I think it's the bride's shoulder that makes it look like she's straining a bit. If her shoulder were more relaxed, the kiss would look effortless.

I like the panoramic with the moon and the calm water. It appears, though, that the spire is leaning to the right... I also think that it would be more interesting if the city trailing off in either direction was cropped, the strength in the shot being the center of the photo. IMO

I missed an exit on the way home a couple days ago, and instead of turning around I went through some back roads just to see new things. Actually ran across a wind farm, which I had never seen in person before, so I stopped to take a couple shots. This one was directly under it, using a 300 mm. Looking back, it might have been good to use the 180, but I like this all the same. C&C always appreciated!

Very nice shot, it looks like the snake is coming through something, breaking cover between two places with foliage, for example. I like how the head is sharp and stands out from the background while the rest of the snake fades away. But . . . . you know it's worse to be bitten by a baby rattler than an adult, right? Yes, I know, they're more likely to inject the full content of their venom glands. Also, they're thinner and can (in my experience) maneuver a bit quicker than adults. I've worked at a snake lab before (I helped manipulating snakes to extract venom), and as a Biology major and Animal Biology Lab TA for three consecutive years I know how to get close, but not too close. Hi! This is my first post to the photography section here, so please be kind! I came upon this interesting scenario the first time I went camping in August of last year. A snake hid near a river and caught a fish after it went over a small fall. My wife heard the struggle and I was there quickly with my trusty little canon sd800 in hand. I'm by no means a real photographer, but I thought this was a lucky and interesting shot I captured! And it fits with the snake theme recently developed in the last few posts here... I think cropping this closely would make it much more eye catching, but this is straight from my camera (through iphoto and iweb, of couse). :P

Great shot! (and welcome to the board, I just started posting here too).

I like it a lot, I was going to say it tells a story but it more feels like it tells the end of a story than the whole story - don't take that as a bad thing! I would say you're right in that cropping out the excess space would make it more eye catching, I just did a dirty job of that real quick in Preview and it looks nice, gives it a more dynamic feel with the snake cutting across the whole picture. Also, you might try grabbing a nice polarizing filter if you don't have one already, that would get rid of some of the glare which is a little distracting, especially on the rocks on the right. The belly of the fish seems just almost overexposed to the point of not getting detail, but I'm not sure you could have helped that without making the rest of the picture look too dark. Maybe the polarizer would have helped with that, I dunno.

Overall, a really great shot. Don't let my lots of C&C make you feel bad, I always overdo it. The picture looks great! (though maybe add a quick cropping ;) )

Thanks for the input, Ja Di! Since I use a simple point and shoot, I don't think a polarizing lens is an option I can attach. (If I'm wrong, please correct me! I use a Canon SD800IS).

Still, I like the idea, and if I move to a DSLR, I think I will keep that option in mind! I appreciate the feedback, and I've had fun going through the archives to see all the real photographers' works! I have a long way to go but I think its going to be fun to try!

wow, now that photo just screams "summertime" to me. when i was much younger my best friend and I used to catch those grasshoppers and just check them out for what seemed like forever. Grasshoppers of that midwestern variety (they looked like the one in your photo where I grew up around Detroit, but i've seen variations in other regions) are some of the most beautifully built "machines" in the world, from the way everything is put together to the textures and colors of each part. but they used to scare the hell out of us when one would fly up out of nowhere and land on one of our legs! how silly is that?!!

Sweet, Thanks! I'm used to cropping my pics into a conventional size (4X6, 5X7, etc.) It just felt weird to leave "as is"

Some footprints on the beach. I'm not sure I like this picture that much, any comments appreciated.

I tend to let the picture dictate the crop... and try to crop as little as possible. If I have to crop a lot away, it usually means I didn't get the composition right 'in the camera'. I'd feel rather constrained to be bound a particular format - for prints - but it's an individual choice, I guess... :)

Imagine clean, virgin sand, with your two footprints, shot early or late in the day to give 'modelling' to the indentations (ie make them more 3-D). You'd need to walk around to see what effect the lighting would have. In your pic the footprints almost 'disappear' into the sand.

Agreed. I have to say it was the worst possible time to shoot, it was almost noon so there was no chance of any shadows at all to create depth. I just couldn't put my finger on that when I looked at the photo... Thanks for the help.

Yeah, very true! Sometimes I'm forced to compose a shot with cropping in mind, due to physical barriers, or limitations of the lens. Thanks for catching me getting addicted to cropping!

I would have focused on the near footprints, letting the others trail into the distance. Is there any particular reason why you chose to focus on the far footprints instead of the near ones? (space issues, maybe?)

excuse me while I use your image for some examples. Comparing this to the other footprint picture, we see a focus point in the image due to tighter depth of field which gives the eye a point to seek or/and a point of approach. I must say that I really don't like the (wrongly done) vignette. The vignette in lightroom is there to fix lens aberrations and therefore doesn't start from the ends of your crop, it starts from the original border and your cropping makes it looks awkward, it doesn't need a vignette anyway.

What they both lack is a sens of light which makes them a little too gray for eyecandy type of photographs.

I appreciate the C&C. I agree with most of your assessment. I considered it a "throw-away" image and only posted it because I saw one with a similar theme.

That's actually not a vignette. I converted the original to HDR for the hell of it and then converted the HDR to a monochrome image. The combination created what, I admit, looks like a vignette...but it's not.

Saw another one of these on the forums and then noticed this one in my garden - they like to come in the early evening and always seem to be in the shade but they are amazing and very fast. I've never seen one when the light is good - it's quite hot here normally so I guess they've developed for later in the day.

Well, I think you've asked a question... and answered it yourself. Taking a "chance shot out of your bedroom window" will capture the colour of a sunset, but that's all. To get a really good sunset shot, IMO, you've got to do some forward planning... and be at your chosen location, with camera on tripod, before the 'main event'.

Great shot ! Nice and sharp. I was at the German GP at Hockenheim in July but had a big fence in between me and the track so my photo's were pants.
Got a better shot of a McLaren at the f1 village.

Did you use to live in Australia or something Kenya? That's a famous Australian folk song... :)

Is it really? I grew up in the U.S. and learned that song in the first or second grade. Apparently it's stuck with me throughout the years :)

I get the feeling this shot might be pretty 'straight' (ie no Photoshopping). Am I right? I love these extreme conditions, and strange - but natural - light...

Agreed, would have had better results if I'd planned it (as far as you can plan the Scottish summer!), climbed up a nice peak or went down to a beach. I was just trying to demonstrate results from an unplanned spur-of-the-moment shot, which I think shows to all other newbies OK results but nowhere as good as some of the more professional efforts. And as my first time attempting it, I was rather pleased the way it came out and will give me some experience if I want to attempt a planned shot in the future (difficult with a young family.)

Yeah, just a few exposure and light tweaks, but no photoshop. Love your pictures BTW. I'm guessing you like shooting landscapes?

I like this picture. I has a good depth of field and loneliness feeling to it.

The image is interesting, but the composition is slightly off. You may still be able to crop it so it turns out great. See this article:
