This is for a mac only, so please dont list PC apps, but aside from Handbrake, which I think is great, what other free mac apps would you recommend for ripping movies for Apple TV?

I have ripped about 200 dvds so far using handbrake without issue, but some dvd's wont rip. They either get thru the entire rip process and then at the very end crash handbrake, or, as the case is with my Twilight Zone dvd's, just selecting the disc as the source crashes handbrake.

I thought I might try to see what other programs are out there. I tried Visual Hub, based on someones recommendation, but and even according to their own FAQ, Visual Hub is not for ripping dvd's.

Also, Im looking for one program that does it all like Handbrake, not using multiple apps just to successfully rip one DVD.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The Baron

well i use a combination of mac the ripper and handbrake. I rip the dvd file with mac the ripper then encode it with handbrake over night with 2 pass h.264 encoding. If the dvd still wont rip i use dvdfab hd decrypter in parallels for sony dvd (mac the ripper some times has trouble with those casino royale for example) but thats a windows program.

funny you mention, because I'm currently trying to rip my twlight zone dvds as well.

handbrake won't work.
mtr -> handbrake won't work.
fair mount -> dvd2onex won't work.
dvd shrink on windows won't work.

i'm stumped. and it's funny because these dvd sets came out a long time before all the new dvd copy protection tricks, i'm sure.

I wasn't aware of that feature in Handbrake. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I tried it on 5 different chapters, and the same thing happens. The disc spins around, stops, and spins around again (making a sound on the MBP dvd drive almost like when you wake it from sleep).

Handbrake doesn't crash, it just can't read the DVD.

Even after quitting Handbrake, the DVD continues to spin as described above.

I have to open DVD Player to get it to start spinning right again, and quitting DVD Player makes it stop.

Do you have access to an external optical drive? the latest Liteon can be had for about £25, it might be worth a try?

Try DVDFab. It works with everything. Are you sure there's no problem with the discs? Do they play in DVD Player? (Are they the same region as your drive?)

I find if I can play the video on my machine, I can use Fair Mount. I let it start on the dvd player then stop it on the menu screen. As long as it is it is seen on my desktop it registers for Fair Mount and the I use my my ripping program. I use the same program I got with Fair Mount through a Machiest or MacUpdate package.

Well, apparently it was just the first disc that didn't work. I tried the other discs in the set, and they worked fine in MTR -> Handbrake.

Oddly enough, the first disc didn't do anything in my MBP but spin around in the drive when trying to rip with MTR. But trying the same disc on a MacBook, Handbrake is ripping everything fine, except for a poorly mastered title 3. MTR says the same when trying to rip it.

Odd.

beware: mbp superdrives likely rank amongst the worst drives for dvd ripping. You would likely find that a cheap pioneer dvd drive in a cheap firewire enclosure would rip it just fine. I know cause I have both. :)

Try a Title Chapter rip in Mactheripper and then Handbrake

I always use Mactheripper to rip the DVDs into folders and then handbrake to convert the files after that. Occasionally I run across a DVD that mactheripper says has "deliberate bad sectors" and it asks me if I want to PAD or Delete the bad VOB sectors.

If that happens I cancel the rip and instead of doing a whole disk rip or a Main title rip I change the mactheripper setting to a Title chapter rip at the bottom and then select the largest title from a list and then choose chapter 1 through the last one listed, ususally 1-28 or 35 or something like that. That gives me 1 VOB file of the movie when its done. I then convert that file to an mpeg 4 in handbrake and everything works fine. Using that method I have ripped and converted 350 movies without issue.

Hope that helps.

Does it really matter? no

I am also looking for a handbrake alternative I ripped a DVD and when it plays it's pixilated and skips.
