iMac slow to find wireless when waking... is this normal?

I have a mid-2007 aluminum iMac and I've noticed that when I wake it from sleep it can take 10-15 seconds to find it's wireless connection again... which doesn't sound that long, but for example- that's long enough for my Gmail notifier (which runs in the menu bar) to register an error, thinking there's no internet connection.

Anyway my question is, is this a normal lag time? And if not can I fix it? (Without having to cable the computer to the internet router).

I dont experience it with my iMac but w/ my MB i do about half of the time. doesnt really bother me that much but I do notice the difference.
