View Full Version : GPS does not work after installing 2.0.1

I installed the 2.0.1 update this morning and ever since the gps has not been working on google maps. The tower triangulation does not work either. I have tried restoring my iphone but it has not fixed it.

Does anyone else have any advice or is anyone suffering from the same problem? It is very annoying because i used the GPS feature most.

For me, the location service is spotty when I'm on UMTS, but works perfectly when I'm on Edge. Perhaps the Skyhook database is incomplete for 3G towers? Or assisted GPS for some reason doesn't work well with UMTS?

Anyway, I think there must also be a software problem. Even if the cell tower positioning via Skyhook doesn't work, you should still get a GPS lock after a while. But in some cases the busy-indicator just keeps spinning and you never get a lock.

I have now managed to get mine working by turning off location services in the settings menu and then turning them back on again.

Mine works indoors, only if am connected to wifi, or ouside. My blackberry detects the position instantaneously although it hasn’t got GPS

This is clearly a software issue.

The GPS signal is fine. Don't forget how much being inside, cloud cover, weather can effect signal reception.

Hmmm...I thought something might be wrong with mine. I got it new yesterday and it triangulated my position in the flat last night (although I suspect not by GPS).

Had patchy coverage all day because 02 was porting my number across and then it won't work at all this evening. Cell coverage has been fine, both Edge and 3G, Google Maps works, but the location thing - nothing!

Hello all,

I too have had an issue with location services since I upgraded to v. 2.0.1 last night. When i try to use location services in Maps and have 3G (with full bars), It just continuously searches but never find me. When i turned off the 3g and used maps, it found me within 5 secs.

Hope they figure out how to fix. None of the apps I have, including the Camera ask me to use it anymore since it cannot find me.

That's so weird that alot of you are having problems. I'm pretty sure they changed something though, because mine is significantly BETTER after the update. I never had any real problems before, but after the update, the gps is locking on AT LEAST twice as fast as before (like 5-8 seconds now instead of 15-20 seconds). It also seems to be more accurate and tracks my position a bit smoother.

A friend mentioned this problem to me this morning...I when i tried to locate the icon would just spin and not find me...tried with 3g off/wireless off etc. All i did was power off my iPhone and power it back on...everything worked good as new after that and found my location right away.

I suggest just powering off and back on and hopefully you will be fixed too

Used to get a lock inside on 2nd floor, near windows, but now taking much longer to get a lock, in car or in house. Also, when a lock is possible, hitting the GPS locate me button takes much longer. I'm resorting to putting as many wifi MAC addresses into Skyhook as I can :D

Hey All,

After posting yesterday, I stepped outside and my 3G picked up my location. It seems odd that inside my building w/ full 3G bars, it couldn't find me, but on EDGE inside the building it did. Once I stepped outside, both found me.

Does anybody know why this would happen? It can't be that the building is blocking the signal since I get all my bars for both and EDGE finds me no problem.

I was having problems with mine in London and have found that it will only work if Wifi is turned on. I'd been turning it off when I left the house so it didn't ask me if I wanted to join a network. With it back on, the location thing seems to work pretty well.

Another quick note. When I got off the plane in Puerto Rico last night it took it about five min. to find me so give it some time it your still having problems.

Yeah, that's most likely because the GPS software would keep in its memory a vague idea of the last time you used it. Dedicated GPS units like TomToms and Garmins use this to give a location faster, so if you've moved quite a considerable distance since last you used it, then it's bound to take a wee while to get its bearings, almost as if you had turned it on for the first time.

For everyone else who's having problems, try pressing 'locate me' when you're outside. GPS units have a hard time getting a signal indoors so you're not doing it any favours trying to get a location inside.

Hope this helps! :)

GPS works outdoors but when indoors and in 3G mode, it doesn't. Just searches and BURNS battery.

I guess its ok for now, but want a fix.

Other than that, for me, it is actually perfect, especially after the 2.0.1 update.

Just that little quirk.

my experience with the GPS so far is it seems to work much faster when i have good 3G reception in Edge only areas it doesn't pinpoint to the street very quickly, while at a 3G area, it takes less than 5s for it to find my exact location

Aug 8, 2008, 01:29 PM
The GPS works fine for me when outside because it get a view of the satellite. It's indoors that I have problems. When I'm on 3G indoors it will not find my location using the cell towers and wifi. If I turn off 3G and go to EDGE it works fine indoors. I never had this problem on 2.0 just since 2.0.1.

I met with a "genius" yesterday and he could not give me a clear answer. He said it works and sometimes indoors you can have problems without a clear view of the sky. He did a restore in the store and tried to blame it on my .ipsw file on my computer. It worked about 3 times of the 15 times I tried it in the store. I went over to the 2.0 display phones and they all worked within seconds. That didn't prove anything to him either. I tried to explain to him how it is suppose to work using the cell towers and wifi but he kept going back to his previous explanation.

I hope Apple recognizes this. We will just have to wait for an update.

Not working on 2.0.1 here either, located in London.

Actually, that's a lie. I got GPS working fine with 3G and WiFi disabled, but as soon as I turn 3G on it just spins forever. Tried to turn Location Services on and off, but nothing.

Really quite annoyed at how buggy this thing is now - GPS not working, keyboard still lagging...

I have the solution... ssh into the phone, replace the "CoreLocation.framework" folder in your pwned 2.0.1 with the one from 2.0, use bossprefs to fix permissions ... works like a charm.... back to the excellent accuracy from 2.0
N.B. I am in the states... on a 2g phone YMMV do this at your own risk

EDIT: seems to work only temporarily... I reverted back to the original files.
rebuilt permissions...

I actually have the first gen iphone and after the 2.0.1 update, my maps won't work at all now! I bring up the maps, and the maps gui comes up but without any actual maps. It stays there for about three seconds, then closes and goes back to the home menu.

I've tried restarting the phone, clearing the network settings, and restoring the phone through itunes. No luck! It worked fine before 2.0.1 :(

I called Apple on the issue and they said if a restore didn't take care of it, then it must be a hardware problem and I would need to send it in. Problem is my phone is out of warranty and they said it would cost $199 to repair it! I might as well get a new one!

I guess I'll have to go without maps for a while :( hopefully it's fixed in the next firmware update.

My GPS is very sporadic. I'm running 2.0.1 and it takes a number of reboots before it will locate me, if it will at all.

I have no idea why google map pinpoint service is not working after 2.0.1 just like everybody wonders. some people say 'skyhook system is melt down'. but who knows? what's the funny thing is that twinkle, twitter, some apps which need location, they are working well. only google map shows me beach ball of madness. I am not sure but is it something mistake by apple like keeping backup everytime when you connect with itunes? well, backup speed is now way faster though. I guess that apple killed some serious execution code during developing 2.0.1. so I expect that they will update to 2.0.2. it seems true.

Alight! My super accurate locate me is working again on my first gen 2.0.1 pwned phone!

I have been reading all over the inter-web that it is one of two problems:
- a firmware bug from apple, not very likely since it happens with 2.0 and 2.0.1 users at different time under different conditions
- a Skyhook problem

For me it seems like it is a Skyhook problem, and a very regional specific issue. Some regions have this problem, some don't. And it seem to be being fixed by region. I am in Minneapolis and it just started working tonight, it would interesting to see if anyone else near my area has this problem still, or see what other regions are still effected.

I'm curious if this is a problem that users of PwnageTool are experiencing. A "legit" 2.0.1 update upgrades the baseband, which is most certainly part of GPS functionality. A PwnageTool update retains the baseband from 2.0.1 (v1.4.5 IIRC). Remember when 2G/1.1.3's "locate me" feature couldn't be used by people upgrading using dev team methods?

If Maps 2.0.1 is expecting to be interfacing with the baseband from 2.0.1 and is instead getting the baseband from 2.0.0...I imagine there could be issues like the ones we are seeing.

From the very begining, with my 3G iPhone, I have been having GPS problems. It is very inaccurate in the first place. Sometimes it will show my location up to a mile or more off. I understand some of that is due to where I live and the towers and all of that, but isnt it suppose to be more accurate.

But after the update it just went to crap. It takes forever to find where I am and then when it does, it is way inaccurate. The thing that frustrates me is my friend has a blackberry pearl and her phone finds where we are to 3 meters right away. I think the GPS in these was suppose to be way better.

Is this a documented problem with apple yet?

When I was pressing the button, the wheel would spin forever, without even trying to send data.
I had everything, even resetting the iphone without importing any of the previous data... nothing...
I was going to post to moan and then decided to try to use it while wifi was deactivated as somebody said it helped. It did not. But now after reactivating wifi it works!!!! I do not know for how long and I hope the trick will work for some of you.

I'm having the same issue:
Cell tower triangulation has worked twice in the 20+ time I've tried it
GPS however seems to work fine and locks on pretty quick

This is on a 3G iPhone, no jailbreak, O2 iPhone contract in London.

I spoke to Apple who confirmed it's a know issue at the moment, but were sure it had nothing to do with the 2.0.1 update. The suggested the usual turning off/on 3G, wifi and Location Services and a restore.

Same problem here. 2.0.1 in Seattle.

Can it be a problem with the network? Perhaps the "assisted" part of AGPS is not working for some reason. Without AGPS, the iPhone has to download ephemeris from the satellites, which takes a long time.

It seems like more and more people are having nothing but trouble with their GPS after 2.0.1, but still, mine is faster to grab my blue dot than 2.0, and it also tracks smoother and more accurately. I got my 3G iPhone about 2 weeks ago and the Cell Tower Triangulation (bull’s-eye) and the GPS Triangulation (dot) worked fine with 2.0. It would acquire my position within a couple of minute’s right down to the dot.

I upgraded to 2.0.1 and now the only thing that works is the Cell Tower Triangulation (bull’s-eye). No matter how long I leave it or what combination of radios are on or off, it still doesn’t find my gps location. I did a restore a couple times thinking that would help and nothing.

I jailbroke it wondering if maybe that would help and it does not, still just the bull’s-eye and no dot. I am thinking about exchanging it but afraid I will just get another one with the same problem when I go to 2.0.1. Or do I just wait for another update (ridiculous).

This was all done outside with a clear view of the sky.

Does anyone have anymore information from apple on this or any other ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks

My GPS also stopped working after the 2.0.1 update too.

However, I eventually got it working again by doing the following:

Turned off 3G, wifi, and location services in settings
Restarted my iPhone
Went out to a spot with a really clear view of the sky (not easy in London, I had to go to the middle of a park), loaded google maps and hit the find crosshair button
Left iPhone to aquire its position for at least 10 minutes
Turned back on location services, 3g, and wifi

After following these steps my iPhone worked out where it was, and it has been working ever since, locking onto its position within a minute (both through cell towers initially then gps). Hopefully this will help other iPhone users with the same issue!

For me, since the 2.0.1 update, the triangulation seems to work most of the time, however my GPS location seems to rarely work. I flew to Louisville, KY last week and actually needed directions, I waited 5 minutes before giving up and calling somebody to get directions. But after being in Louisville a couple hours it seemed to eventually figure out where I was and seemed to work better. However, now that I'm back in Raleigh, NC I don't think I've been able to get GPS to work since.

Ok something to try quick. I haven't had time to test but it seemed to work this morning:

Turn Wifi off.
Open up maps and let it get the cell tower triangulation (bulls eye).
Double tap the screen to zoom in.
Double tap the screen to zoom in once more and then dont touch it.
Make sure the location thing in the corner is still blue.
Wait 5 minutes for blue dot.

I have no idea if this would have anything to do with it but I did this zooming in this morning and I got the dot in about 5 minutes. It could have just been coincidence. Someone else try it and see.

Ok scratch that it must have been a coincidence. I just tried again on lunch and waited 30 minutes and got nothing.

I thought my "fix" had been turning off the WiFi - turns out that was probably just a coincidence and it now works fine.

What I think fixed it was that I had synched the phone with a NZ laptop - there's a setting somewhere in the General Section to do with region format.

Changed that to UK and now mine works every time.
