i thought twinkle doesn't show the twitter servers. so the public timeline you're seeing isn't twitters it's twinkles. plus you have to create an additional account with Twinkle.

Twinkle has too much eye candy for me, I much prefer Twittelator has just enough polish to look nice without distracting from its functionality. Although I'm not a real fan of how it shrinks the font size for long tweets.
EDIT: Fixed my bad grammar. :o Usually I'm the one complaining about such things although your/you're is my biggest pet peeve...

From the Wiki:
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook. For SMS, four gateway numbers are currently available: short codes for the United States, Canada, and India, as well as a United Kingdom number for international use. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email.

Am I the only one who actually has trouble reading this? I read it "without distracting from it is fuctionality" ... I mean, it's actually difficult for me to read when people make mistakes like this.
Am I the only one that has this difficulty? It's even harder for me when people mix up their "theres."

Obviously you're the only one that has such a big issue with it that you had to make a post about it.
But yes it is annoying and something you will always have to deal with on the internets.

So it seems like it's Twitterriffic vs Twinkle ... Is this still the case with the other new tweet apps now available? Any concerns with creating yet another profile for twinkle- security issues?

Twinkle is a good App but i hate the fact that i di not see the Twitter timeline. I also do not like the fact that it uses its own network and that you have to sing up.
Sometimes you talk to somebody in Twinkle but once you start using Twitter via desktop or web browser you find out that you cannot talk to this person because they are only in Twinkle.

They are all free, no? Or pretty much all of them at least anyway. So try them and see which one you like best, as no doubt it will be a personal thing.
As much as I wanted to like it, the fact these apps become a mass dumping ground for brain farts by the socially inept is off putting to say the least. Still, your milage may vary!

Twinkle for me. The Nearby feature is the only reason I even twitter now days.
The nearby feature is really a great feature, and Twinkle has come a long way since it was first released. I really like it also. Although I do have to admit I haven't actually talked to anyone who shows up on Twinkle nearby.
What amazes me is that the Twitter community is still so small. Nearby is basically considered the entire Chicagoland area, and yet there is not such an insane volume of nearby posters that it's unusable. Although, does nearby only consist of Twinkle users or perhaps only consist of users who have geotagging?

Twinkle uses their own server for the location aspect. If that goes down, you may not be able to tweet at all.
Plus, Twinkle crashes with just one little error in the cache.
I use Twitterrific. The interface and GUI is much better.

Twinkle sign-up is not a big deal. it's just your email addy, really. and im pretty sure you can do it all through the app itself.
anyway, you can still 'follow' people in twitter who dont use geo tagging and they'll show up in Twinkle.
I tried all three Twitter apps and I found Twinkle is the best, but if you don't like/don't plan to use the "nearby" aspect, then skip it.
otherwise, it's definitely the best of the bunch.

So am I correct in thinking that Twitter is facebook statues updates but without the rest of what facebook offers? (except twitter makes a point of notifying you of everyone's updates).

If that's what your friends Tweet about you need to consider some better friends. Twitter is great (and Twinkle in particular) when you're in town and tweet "anyone want to meet up for coffee" and get a couple of people to meet up with.
Twinkle does use its own network but also posts to Twitter if you tell it to and will read your Twitter friends feed. I prefer it over Twitterific (which I use on OSX) because of the nearby feature and its colour coding is much better. Not a fan of the starry background, but it's not so bad to be distracting. Twinkle have also said they will be all over the push notification service when it launches and may be one of the only Twitter apps that can implement it because they run their own server to process your Twitter feed.
Twinkle also has a beautifully integrated photo option so you can take a photo in the app and upload to the Twinkle servers. In the Twinkle app these then show up as an attachment to the post and in other Twitter apps show up as a link.
I would love to see Twinkle hook up with the clever people at www.hahlo.com who have a really great grasp on interacting with the Twitter service, but don't have the time to port it from a web app to a native iPhone app which would give them the really nice geolocation features integrated.
I spent a few days initially with Twinkle and wasn't keen, tried Twitteltor and wasn't impressed and then used Twitterific for about three weeks. With the amount of fuss people made with Twinkle I gave it another go and have since uninstalled Twitterific purely because of the nearby and photo features.
They're all free, download them all and spend a few hours seeing which one works for you, though if you're new to Twitter it may seem fruitless until you have a decent number of people you want to follow. I've been on Twitter for well over a year and it's only the last few months it's started to become really useful and fun. Best hint, don't follow all the web 2.0 celebrities, follow 50 people that Twitter near you.

The only real advantage I see for Tweetie over TwitterFon is the ability to have multiple accounts. This is good for someone like a developer who has a personal account and a company/app account as well. Otherwise, TwitterFon is the way to go.

Twitterfon
I have both Tweetie and Twitterfon on my iPhone and always find myself going back to Twitterfon.
Tweetie may have some nicer interface touches, like the Twitpic viewer, but it's Twitterfons auto loading of all the messages, replies and DM's which wins it for me

I was using twitterfon i think is the best overall and free! I have decided to try some others. So far I bought twitterville and twitterena. Twitterena has a really nice theme and is fun to use. I did notice that the developer gives credit to the author of twitterfon, which makes me think its not much more then a re-skinned app, which is sort of weak but it was only .99 So as much as people like twitterfon this has all the same features but with a improved interface and chrips for new tweets(i love that).
The other is twitterville, that app seem to be getting a lot of updates and attention. It has the same look as twitter would on your pc. it doesnt have all the features the others have but theres an update coming and the developer is working hard to make it much better.

I'd recommend Tweetie. I've been a little disappointed in Twinkle and development in a lot of ways seemed to have stopped. If you're looking for a free client, I'd suggest Twitterrific.
I like Twitterrific 2.0 but I just can't let go of Tweetie. They have some features that I consider important and I naturally keep going back to it.

I have Tweetie, Twitterific Premium and Twittelator (plus Birdcage, for composing Tweets I later want to post). Each of them have their own good points, of course, but I would say definitely go with Tweetie:
It's got a very elegant UI, including all the features like Timeline, it's cheapish at U$2.99, and like Twinkle -- which I haven't tried -- it has the "Nearby" functionality. If you're going to do something, at least give yourself a chance to like it by getting a decent app.
As for whether you should even be on Twitter, that's really your call.
I personally was there when IRC and chatrooms started; I was there when Facebook took off, and when Linkedin made waves, so there was no way I would miss out on Twitter. Instead of making friends, like on Facebook, on Twitter one can actually have a link to and speak to the power brokers of this world, real-time (I'm not kidding. A friend of mine now regularly Tweets with Karl Rove, of all people).
If you just want a time-wasting device, to chat with random people, not all of them worth your time, check out the Distant Shore app. It'll be right up your alley.
But Twitter is just new enough so that it hasn't been ruined, like at times I feel Facebook and certainly Friendster/MySpace have been. Everyone should be on it, if only for the interconnectivity.

I completely agree.
A lot of people say that twitter is just like facebook status. Well, at least for me my friends facebook status are just apps and games notifications, I have to comb through all that stuff to actually find something worth reading.
On twitter I'm actually following people that, even though I may not know them personally, have very interesting things to say. And from what I've seen, I don't think twitter could get ruined like Myspace and Facebook, at least not easily.

I've been testing Twitterific 2.0 since it came out. It has some nice touches such as the extra search functions but it's still slow, timed out and couldn't post a handful of tweets and repeatedly locked up on me, even after a restart.
The cosmetic touches don't make up for the gateway iconfactory has it running through. Tweetie remains far superior.

Okay, so I have an intel Mac (Macbook)... and I use Crossover, so I can run Wind0ze apps such as Digsby. I am trying to find something to use for Twitter, Facebook, Blogger (definitely those).
I have Adium for IMing for myspace, facebook, yahoo, msn, aim, etc
and Digsby (and with Digsby, Facebook - not the IM part, but the social networking part doesn't work)...
I need something for the following (and the asterisk are definite)...and interaction w/ social networks is nice too:
========================
Social Networks I use:
**Twitter
**Facebook
**Blogger
**Youtube
*Myspace
LJ
Hi5
last.fm
project playlist (playlist.com)
pandora
etc
=============
IM networks:
**AIM
**Facebook
**Google Talk
*Yahoo
MSN
Myspace
================
Clients I've used recently: Adium and Digsby
and with Digsby I ran via CrossOver... (CrossOver is used to run wind0ze apps w/o wind0ze on an intel mac, in my case my Macbook)
I use HelloTxt.com (the website from my web browser)...
<from my googling I saw that HelloTxt is in the process of working on an app). I've googled looking for apps, and have found: -Digsby (where Facebook the interactive social networking part of it doesn't work for some reason)... -I found a few apps that use Adobe-Air -I've found 8Hands -I saw the Flock Browser

• I use Flock to do a lot with my social network accts.
• When I want to briefly see twitter (and hopefully eventually facebook)... I use Adium.
• To update my soc. networks quickly I use Adium, and just IM using GoogleTalk..(it can also be done in Gmail...) my status....I do it through HelloTxt.com:
