Actual max RAM for MBP 17" - MA611LL/A ??

I know the max RAM is listed as 3GB, but, if I use two 2GB sticks, can I eck out 3.25GB or something similar? Or will I be limited to 3GB no matter what?
I'd like the most RAM possible for my VMWare....

3.3GB Max.

It appears to be a hardware limitation due to the Chipset used.

you could do that, but you would then be spending money on 3/4 of a GB which you won't use.

but wont using paired sticks be a slight improvement?

Yes, but slight meaning saving a couple of minutes in a few hours work. If you need those extra few minutes (as some people do), then go for it.

Also the price difference between 1GB and 2GB sticks is like $15 now...

He's already stated he wants to get as much RAM as possible in there. Even if it's "only" a little more (300 MB is actually quite something, especially when it's the difference between something fitting in memory, and not), it fits the bill. And there'll be a performance improvement due to increased memory bandwidth with dual channel enabled, especially helpful in memory-stringent tasks.

Go for it. It's only another $15, as mentioned, so big deal. There was a time when 1 GB of memory would have cost you about $10,000.
