View Full Version : got netshare from torrent, onto iphone? (non-jailbroken)

Aug 7, 2008, 08:05 PM
basically i posted on the main netshare thread about downloading it from a torrent website (i said on that thread that i dont normally use torrents, as i buy all my own cd's, dvd's and software)
but anyway, a user, who ive tried to contact via PM, said there is a way of getting apps that have been downloaded in this way onto an iphone that hasn't been jailbreaked. he specifically said it was done using a PC, not a mac.
anyone got any insight into this?

You cannot do it unless the phone is jailbroken.
How else are you supposed to add files into the phone?

i don't know, that's exactly why i asked the question. obviously someone knows (or is making up) a way of doing it.

iTunes won't recognize it if its a legit app even if it isn't downloaded from the store?

You must have a jail-broken iPhone. I tested this on a first-gen iPhone running 2.0, but it should work on 3G iPhones as well.
Using an SFTP application (I use Cyberduck), drag the NetShare.app/ folder from the desktop into the iPhone's /Applications folder.
Open a terminal window, and open an SSH session with the iPhone:
$ ssh root@192.168.0.5
(replace the IP address above with your iPhone's IP Wi-Fi address.) The default root login password is "alpine".
Next, go to the NetShare.app folder:
# cd /Applications/NetShare.app
and change the access file mask of the main application file:
# chmod 755 NetShare
Reboot (or re-spring if you know how) your iPhone.
You're done!

Actually there is a way to do it without using permissions, you replace a MobileInstallation file and then you open cracked .ipa files in iTunes and the next time you sync up your iPhone your apps will be put on your iPhone just like any legit app. Currently im trying to figure out a way where you can view the internal iPhone folders, without jailbreaking, I found one app DiskAid, but you can't reach the right folders, but you can see hidden folders, like in a normal iPod, when its in diskmode.

If you've read the instructions for or done the "MobileInstallation" hack you'd know you still have to change permissions on multiple directories for it to work.

what about using one of these (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/08/08/pterm-ssh-telnet-client-for-iphone/) for ssh? I would really like to see netshare working again.

I was able to get the netshare file and itunes recognizes it but wont install, so same problem here. I did hear a rumor that there is a cracked version of netshare than can be dropped into itunes and installed but i have not seen it. I think apple must have someone 24/7 finding these files (if they exist) and then doing whatever they can to hide them. Anyone know if there is a cracked version of netshare?

Actually you don't need to change the permissions to work. I've replaced the file on three different iPhones/iPod Touches and they have worked fine.

I'm confused....
1. Can we get the torrented app into iTunes to act like a paid app or not?
2. Do we have to change permissions or not?

1) Not at the moment. If there was it would have to be cracked in a certain way, which no one has done yet
2) I haven't had problems with changing permissions for files when i used Open SSH and then loading the cracked .ipas onto my iPhone it works fine.

1) you can load an .ipa from iTunes, but you must swap out the "mobileinstallation" file per directions first.
2)You also need to change permissions on that new "mobileinstallation" file to 775.
One set of instructions erroneously refers to the "mobileinstallation" file as "mobileframework" He made a simple mistake. Just think the first one if you read the second one.
If you're trying to install a .app (instead of .ipa), use ssh to drag the file to the applications folder and follow what ever instructions came with the .app.

I've never had to change permissions for it to work. Ive just had to replace the file, reboot and then sync the cracked apps onto my iPhone from iTunes.

The question is, where did you find the instructions to put it into iTunes, etc. or what method did you use? I'm having issues finding good instructions on how to get it into iTunes.

My Netshare folder says .ipa In that, there's a file? called iTunesArtwork and folder called Payload. In that, there's a folder called Netshare.app. Do I put just the netshare.app in the applications directory?
And the command $ ssh root@***.*.*.*** doesn't work.

The .app goes in the applications directory and .ipa is for iTunes but not necessary. Did you install the SSH package via Cydia?
Your missing something somewhere.

For the anti pirating camp - maybe you haven't noticed that you absolutely cannot buy this functionality, that option has been removed unfortunately.

Lavrishevo - At some point I figured out to put just the .app in the phone. Yes, Ssh was running. Then I tried terminal using the no "$" and "#" in front of the commands and it worked.
I "think" I have it now.
I sure could kick myself for not grabbing it the two times it was in front of my face on the store. It's really for my husband for any occasion he'd need this in a pinch.
I'd still like to get it into iTunes properly but couldn't get past making a backup of the mobileblablabla folder. Couldn't figure out how to do that in Fugu. Perhaps learning CyberDuck might be the better way to go. IDK.
Thanks!!!
-----------------------
As for 'stealing' it, I'm all up for any easy way to buy this if it was on Installer, etc. Once I see this is working, I'll likely toss a donation to Nullriver. But I do hope to see this app for sale 'somewhere' soon.

You are taking this way too far all you need is the MobileInstallation file, open ssh on your iPhone, CyberDuck and the netshare.ipa... All you do is locate the current MobileInstallation file in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.Framework/MobileInstallation.
Relpace that file with the new edited one. Restart your iPhone. Doubl click the cracked NetShare.ipa and it puts it in the application section in iTunes.. SYNC WITH YOUR IPHONE!!!!

Does the .app or .ipa method work on 2.0.2 firmware? I followed the ipa instructions 2X and both instances at the end on reboot, my phone hangs on the pineaple and I have to do a original restore then jailbreak the phone all over.

Yes it works with 2.0.2 just fine. I'm guessing you're making a mistake somewhere, probably in the permissions. That, or there is an unrelated issue that's making it appear as if this method does not work. If you have BossPrefs installed, try running the Fix User Dir Permissions option.

I personally don't think Netshare is as good of a net share app. If you have netshare, you've most probably have a jailbroken phone or you must have been one of the lucky few.
If you have a jailbroken phone anyways, the best way to share is terminal, socks and insomnia to keep the connection on with screen switched off.
Not to mention the speeds with socks proxy goes up to 1.5 mbps where as with netshare I can max get about 700 k to 1 mbps

If you can't be ****ed to read the hundreds of posts on how to do this, or even this very ****ing thread, you'll see the ONLY way to use NETSHARE is to JAILBREAK your iPhone! Come on man! READ!!
If you haven't Jailbroken then please, do us a favour and stop asking why it won't work.

Don't feel left out..
I downloaded it legally from the app store, backed it up on Apple's wonderful time capsule, sold my MacBook Air, only to find out the sparse bundle is corrupt when trying to recover it.
I have a 3g 2.1 iPhone that is doing the exact same thing. I install it to the app folder, change everything to 775 and made the document folders in the correct places with 777 and still no dice.
I also tried to install it the way posted here (dropping it into app's folder, then using terminal to change settings) without luck.
I have be able to see the icon from time to time, but it says it can not be opened.
Other than Netshare, I cant find another reason for me to jail brake.
Oh well :(

and...
"1) SSH into your phone, navigate to the folder: "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework"
NOTE: MobileInstallation.framework is a FOLDER!
2) Backup the file "MobileFramework" from the directory above.
NOTE: Rename it to MobileFramework.bak (keep it safe)
3) n/a
4) Copy the patched (2.1) MobileFramework file into the "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework"
NOTE: MobileInstallation.framework is a FOLDER!
5) Set permissions to that new file to 775
Note: CHECK AGAIN! VERY IMPORTANT!
6) Navigate to "/private/var/mobile/"
7) Set permissions to the folder "Applications" to 777
NOTE: make sure reclusive is checked (meaning it sets all files within the folder to 777)
8) Navigate into the "/private/var/mobile/applications/ folder
9) Create a "Documents" folder in the "/private/var/mobile/applications/" folder.
10) Set the permission to 777
11) Navigate to the root level.
12) Navigate into the "/applications/" folder.
13) Create a "Documents" folder in the "/applications/" folder. Set permission to 777
12) Reboot your iPhone - IMPORTANT! Otherwise Apps will not install!
13) Restart iTunes
14) Download one OFFICIAL App from the app store, if you haven't already.
tip: it can be a free app are fine. Just needs to be an OFFICIAL App."
Best of luck!

I've tried all the methods of tethering, and I still prefer the socks method using 3proxy and mobileterminal. Like other people say, the connection is much faster. I don't know why anyone would bother with all this in order to get netshare.

theres actually a better one on cydia called iPhoneModem. you just open the app on your phone, and open this app on your computer, and your connected. no need to mess around with socks and all that. simple to use.

iPhoneModem is not free. If you don't pay and register it, it only works for a few seconds before it cuts off the connection and pops up an annoying nag screen.

since you already have cydia installed, just get pdanet. it's free, and miles better than netshare. it basically turns the phone into a router, no need for changing any settings anywhere.
