Macenstein notes (http://macenstein.com/default/archives/1559) that the popular and free PhoneSaber iPhone application has been pulled from the App Store at the request of Lucasfilm. The developers (http://themacbox.co.uk/2008/08/phonesabers-future/) note:As of now, PhoneSaber will no longer be available, I’ve had a chat with a guy from THQ Wireless (who own the rights for Star Wars apps on mobiles) and apparently the guys from Lucas don’t want it up there anymore. They didn’t want to go down the attacking cease and desist route, so we’re being dealt with very amicably.
They want to do some sort of official, Star Wars branded version of PhoneSaber, and will be working with us on that one. I don’t know any information beyond that, whether they plan to charge for it, advertise with it or what, but we’ll keep you updated on as much as we’re allowed to tell you.
PhoneSaber allows your iPhone to act (mostly) like a light saber, complete with sound effects.

I don't think this means they'll charge for it. A free branded version that possibly advertises other THQ Wireless games would build both brand recognition and general goodwill.

So they can make money since the App Store is only way to get an app...whereas with OS X you can get apps pretty much anywhere

Never noticed there was a mobile applications folder where all your apps are.
I mainly download apps directly from iphone. In 7.7.1 it shows all applications I download from both itunes and iphone.
Could've sworn in last version itunes always backed up all my applications but only showed the applications I downloaded directly in itunes.

I was wondering if this was going to happen. When I first used the app I was thinking how strict Lucasfilm is with their stuff and that it might be a matter of time before the app was pulled. Even movie directors have a hard time referring to anything "Star Wars" in their films because of Lucasfilm's tight grip on the copyrights. Really annoying.

I believe they do, based on one of the threads I read yesterday...they can disable the app, through a firmware update...or out right delete it

This is lame. I bet it's relatively easy for developers to code. I think that every developer should try to make their own and upload it to the app store. It would kinda be like "I'm Spartacus" and the overwhelming majority will save this app from being molested by the corporate war machine. It would become pointless to try to keep it away.
But on the other hand, I bet they know it would really piss people off to have to pay for something they've been using for free. Perhaps they just want to have a Star Wars Saber app done even better.
I actually don't really like Star Wars a whole lot, but I've used the app a few times to show off the iPhone and it usually gets some laughs.

I bet they didn't do anything because the iSaber sucks.
I've just looked at the reviews for it and it seems like nobody likes it, at all.
Seems as though phonesaber is wayy better.
They should just have one of them and change the name of phonesaber to iSaber.
Hmm... I wonder why Lucas Films cares at all.
I means if they do plan on coming out with an updated version of phonesaber, what could be added?
It's already been upgraded a few times and there isn't much it could me missing.

I have a dream. iSaber has much better graphics, better suited for combat. But Phonesaber has much more realistic sound and responds better to the moves. What I want is for the two developers to join forces and create a supersaber that combines the best from the two apps. The we shall have the ultimate iPhone lightsaber experience. I have a dream.

Personally I'm glad Lucasfilm have done this.
I'm looking forward to a new version with far too much extra CGI and perhaps some nonsensical idea like the light being created by midichlorians and the noise being them singing, or something.
Thanks for ruining happy childhood memories George.

Ben Burtt put a lot of work into the sounds and if they just sampled the sounds, as hip hop artists from the 1980s and 1990s know, you have to pay to use copyrighted materials.
I doubt an official Lucasfilm/LucasArts version would be as good. They seem to intentionally add bugs to their products to annoy.

A buck indeed. And Apple gets 30 cents of each buck.
That's a sweet deal for Apple: The developer dukes it out on his own with Lucas, and Apple collects 30% when they're done. Better than giving away free apps, huh? Won't hurt the stock price either.:)

Depends how you define "malicious". Using someone else's intellectual property (copyrighted sounds, trade marks, etc) and denying them the right to earn royalties on it may count as malicious. I'm not sure if PhoneSaber does any of that "malicious" stuff BTW, but I'm sure Lucas' lawyers will be happy to argue it does. Expense accounts and fancy offices don't come cheap :)
And if you think the IP wasn't really worth much in this case, then consider this: One of the first apps in the app store did much he same as PhoneSaber. I can't remember what it was called, but it flashed a red light and made a noise. I think it used the motion detector too. That app, with no Star Wars connection was mercilessly panned and died a quick death!
So the Star Wars franchise is worth something - probably quite a bit. Can't fault Lucas for going after it.

Knowing George, he'll probably release his version as PhoneSaber SE and redo all the graphics in 3D and re-master the sound in THX. Then he'll insert new animations of cute little robots carrying the light saber onto the screen and turning it on for you because he thinks that type of thing was missing from the original. Of course, the new version will be a 50MB download and cost $9.99.
Can't wait!

I've had this on my iPhone since day one, and just got the updated version a few days ago, just in the nick of time.
Yeah, it's FREE and it's silly, but it still is the app that, for some reason, gets the most ooohs and aaahs from folks whenever I show it to them. I've had several who have iPhones themselves get it after I've "performed" with it.
It's been wildly "successful" from a download standpoint.
I agree with some of the posters here - they've seen how popular it's become and now they're gonna "re-tool" it and charge $. Whatever, yeah, thanks but no thanks. *sheesh*

It's called the iSaber.
Even though it shared a lot of the same characteristics as the phonesaber, it was really bad quality and got really bad reviews.

And maybe Lucas Films doesn't even know about it because it sucks so bad.

Well, of course the big corporation is only going to attack the little guy who is succeeding. No point in complaining about an app that nobody likes. So strange the way some management ops think these days. They want to make a couple thousand dollars by selling some cheesy phone light saber app (that won't be any better than current phone saber), so what do they do? Pull a terrible PR move by taking a fun toy app AWAY from users.
Yeah. iPhone users are certainly going to queue up for LucasArts-brand nonsense after they forcibly said NO you can't have that fun toy app anymore, we're taking it down and we're gonna make you buy whatever we come up with, whenever we get around to it.
Terrible, terrible public relations. I am now so off put by LucasArts' greedy nonsense that I could care less about purchasing anything they put out in the near future, app store or otherwise.

Oh its the definition of GRIMMY, absolutely.
They've watched and counted the downloads of phonesaber and said, WOW, thats a lot of people.
Of course, they don't understand at all that the app was FREE and there is almost no one that would pay even the minimum price of 0.99 for it, or something similar.
If iPhone users had any integrity at all, they would absolutely boycott the Lucas Arts app whenever it appears. Protect the small developer. F Lucas.

Well, not to defend them or anything, but if copyright works anything like trademarks (and this may be a trademark issue as well), they don't have a choice but to do this. To let infringements pass can risk the trademark.
Of course, they could also just give written consent to let it happen...

How would this help you? Aren't all the apps, even the free ones, encoded to your iTMS account via DRM? I think it would work just like music purchased from the iTMS. You need to have an authorized computer to open the file.

Proton torpedos always made me giggle, I think Star Trek really paved the way for space based sci-fi, at the time space ships used rockets and silly things like that and then The Enterprise came along with no rockets and a cool new look. Dont get me wrong I am also a Star Wars fan and I really think that the competions that people have over one being better than the other is silly. And I would choose Star Wars: A New Hope over Star Trek:TMP anyday. Anyway, back on topic. That's freaking hilarious. :D Made me laugh outloud.
Edit: well, I'll be damned, I'm finally a member. That must be some sort of record: three and a half years to post 30 times!

If a new version is coming out, why the delay?

Can't you see them at LucasFilm now?
"Did you see the lightsaber app on itunes?" "I hear it's a pretty popular download, and it's FREE!"
"What? Free? Let's take the idea, spend 10 minutes in development (I.E. Make it buggy as hell), and make it our own, and then charge a ton of money for it! We'll be rich!"

How would this help you? Aren't all the apps, even the free ones, encoded to your iTMS account via DRM? I think it would work just like music purchased from the iTMS. You need to have an authorized computer to open the file.
actually the apps are extremely easy to share amongst friends. i have only done t his with apps that i have purchased and then were subsequently pulled from the app store.
i discovered this when i purchased netshare, and then it permanently disappeared. you simply take the app (exp. netshare.app) from the mobile applications folder in your itunes folder and copy it to a jump drive, or similar. with itunes not running, copy the app onto the new, authorized-or-not mac into the mobile applications folder. then simply double-click the newly copied app and it will appear in your itunes applications and sync perfectly to your iphone/ipod touch.

I tried this and it doesn't work for me. I get a message that says the application wasn't installed because it isn't authorized on this computer. I've now tried it twice, with iTunes off on both the donating and receiving machines.

I've no idea how the OP is running native apps. They are DRMed, so can only be used on an iPhone authorised with the purchasers iTunes Store account - as you have discovered.
In a way, this is hardly surprising, given they tend to be small files they would be round the internet in no time - and there would be few sales via iTunes - if there was no protection.

last night I went crazy tryingnto install this one. I hasthe old PhoneSaber, but no matter what I did (even deleteing from both phone and mac) the app would not install. iTunes would say it's installing Lightsaber Unleashed, but it would only install PhoneSaber. :(and now it won't download at all! Did anyone get this to work?

This is weird. I posted earlier that it was available on iTunes and I was able to download it at that time. It's called "Lightsaber Unleashed" in my apps so one would expect it to be the new one. I played it and it's the OLD Phonesaber --- doesn't have all the new features. And you're right, it's not available on US iTunes now.

I was able to download it today from my phone, and it installed just fine.

I am doing just that due to my inability to use phonesaber any more. You see, my iTunes has updated all of my applications--erasing the original phonesaber...an application that I never would have updated...
So, THQ and Lucas have lost this family of 4 as customers--for anything. No Indiana Jones, no star wars, no anything. All over an application that was altered to be an advertisement.
Let me make one thing clear:
The original iPhone application called phonesaber was the best advertisement I have seen for the Star Wars universe. Period. It made me buy the "old" movies for my kids. It made me want to buy new physical sabers for my kids---that won't happen now...
The new phonesaber unleashed is not on my phone and will not be on my phone.
Here is my request for Lucas and THQ to release the original phonesaber as a tribute to all of the fans who have made Lucas extremely rich. They didn't even offer to let us buy the original...I bet many would pay $0.99 for the original phonesaber application--and it would still be an advertisement for Star Wars. I won't even download the new app for free.
Great marketing department THQ and Lucas... Did you guys/gals use to work with Wachovia, WaMu, or another failed bank?
Sigh, where is the force when it is needed??? George, help us out here man...
