View Full Version : Poll: Fart Sounds on iPhone

I wrote a virtual whoopie cushion and it was denied under:
Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.
So we can "pour1out" but we cannot make fart noises in our iphones. I would like to know who would like to have a fart machine on their iPhone.
Everyone I know thinks it is funny. I know many people in their 50's, 60's, 70's that have purchased "fart machines", some are executives. The application is marketed as a virtual whoopee cushion. It is for pranks. You can buy the old whoopie cushions in too many places to count. My wife plays it the app randomly throughout the day, and others we know were excited to see that application.
Search for "Fart" in iTunes and you will get thousands of results, but apparently its too offensive for the iPhone. I saw that someone else's attempt was denied too, so I am not alone.
I have other ideas for apps of course, but this application made me giggle the whole time I was writing it. I know there are more of you out there like me. I don't get along to well with people that can't laugh at a fart joke.

The reason why they denied it is because Steve Jobs is creating his own fart app and yours would compete against his.

Yep, it was denied. $50 bucks I had to pay to license amazing realistic high quality royalty free Fart sounds down the drain. Thousands of laughs and practical jokes squashed.
I had even planned on adding a timer in the next version so you could leave your phone somewhere and have it randomly let one go.
Note, I paid $50 to license the fart sounds for this type of redistribution, the app was only going to be $0.99.

I don't think that you have all that much to complain about, figuring at $50 you probably wouldn't have made a single sale, you can buy an actual whoopie coushin for a lot less than that. If they were going to actually accept it, it should only have been $.99 or free.
And as to the question at hand, I don't think that it was really necessary, and I think that Apple is being careful about what direction they are letting the App Store go in, with the removal of "I am Rich," it shows how Apple is concerned for the integrity and quality of the App Store, it would be apps like this that would be making a fool out of the App Store.

Is there any type of appeal process to the decision. If so, you should show them the research you did in regards to what is already on Itunes. Maybe they will give you a second chance.
Having said that I wouldn't have bought it, but I also wouldn't consider it objectionable.

I have returned an email to devprograms@apple.com asking for reconsidering mentioning the research, but that email is like a black hole. I have yet to get a response to a question from that address.

50 bucks?! Why not just fart into a mic and use it for free! Might cost ya like 5 bucks for some taco bell, but if I were you I would argue that "The majority of the apps in the app store are crap! So what's the difference!?"

you could have hired Mike the Farter AND becky the Quifer for $50 from Howard Stern AND had celebrity names on it!! but Beck would DEFINITELY gotten you denied..
I might have bought a whoopie cushion WITH A TIMER!!
plus, does ANYONE know someone who ACTUALLY SAT ON A REAL WHOOPIE CUSHION??? really..
they sell fart machines for $10.00 in spencer gifts. My dad had one.. so an app for .99 would be a GOOD deal.

Maybe they objected to your terminology used in the app (i.e. did you use the term 'fart' in the app name/description)? I know you can't just name it 'whoopie cushion', but if you avoided possible offensive terms and called it something like "Gas Bag" it could stand a chance.
BTW for $0.99, with a timer (maybe a random timer function too) I'd totally buy it! ;)

To answer the question, "Are Fart Sounds Appropriate on an iPhone?"
... yes.
Farts are usually inappropriate. If they were not, whoopy cushions would never have been made.
Somethings you outgrow, like Chef Boyardee.
Things like armpit farting and PB&J are always magical, even if immature.

I kind of figured if fart machines sell for $10 in stores that a $0.99 cent one would be a steal, who knows what the market would have been though.

I wouldn't have bought this, but I'm upset it was denied. I don't feel this reaches the level that needs to be met for rejection.
I suggest turning it into a sound effect machine with many sounds. (Record the rest yourself to save money.) Then, you can sell a sound effect machine that simply includes a farting sound among a dozen others. Add things like the "tell me a sad story" violin sound and the rimshot drum sound or the "wha wha wha" sad trumpet sound and an applause sound.
Perhaps that might get approved, yet could still offer the same functionality? In fact it might be better...call it a "Conversation Enhancer."
(Not that this would trick Apple, but that they might feel better selling something that was more than JUST a farting joke.)

A fart sound is a sound that is made when air comes out of your anus. To answer your question, the application was only limited to these sounds, and no you cannot record your own in this app.

I guess the bigger issue here is that Apple allows UNRATED movies but a silly app with fart noises doesn't make the cut. They are stifling consumer choice and dictating to a great degree what is offensive. I am as big a fan as anyone of Apple, I have tons of Apple gear. This worries me about Apple and the app store, and makes the me realize the jailbreakers or Android might just do ok in the long run.
This won't be my last app, I'm not that bitter. I just hope Apple works things out if it is going be a 'moral' cop.'
I wonder if everyone in the testing lab wasn't getting anything done because they were making too many fart noises, and the execs quickly worried about mass productivity loss from the practical jokes.

Did you get an official reason for the denial, or was it simply denied?
I ask because in light of your comment quoted above it seems unlikely that Apple would deny your app due to its content.
Are you sure it wasn't a licensing issue?

I'm sure. The denial email specifically stated that my app violated this clause in the iPhone Developer SDK Agreement:
Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.
The decision is final. I offered to rename the application and remove any fart sounds that were "too offensive" by sending an email to sjobs@apple.com and the reply said the decision was final.
The fat lady sang, nothing else I can do. I don't really want to cause a "stink" about it. :-) I just think its kinda sill that it was denied given so much more questionable content in the iTunes Store and wanted to get opinions of how people felt regarding it was denied. I also want to warn others that fart sounds will not be tolerated before they spend time working on a fart machine. My app is not the only fart machine that has been denied.
Who knows, maybe in some country fart sounds are the equivalent of to saying the mother of all curse words. How sad, I was going to add the timer for pranks in the next version and possible "belches" in a later version.
I kind of wonder if the larger concern is not the fart sounds, but the fact that I know this application would have become popular and Apple doesn't want the iPhone to be known as a $400 fart machine. I also wonder if the testers were having too much fun with it and they became worried that it might cause mass productivity loss in corporations. I know after I coded it, I played fart sounds for days and it's still not old to me, immature yeah, but I'll live a lot longer than those who cannot laugh at a fart.
I worked at one location in the past were it was very common to bring up online fart machines on your computer and rattle one off when the office became way too quiet. It always got a laugh.

Childish quite possibly, but as Forest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does". People with your narrow view called the whoopie cushion stupid and lost out on a large business venture. You can read up on it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoopie_cushion) and many other topics at wikipedia in order to educate yourself before you call someone's idea stupid. ;)

Effector is now a sound machine available on the AppStore that you can turn into a remote control fart machine or whoopie cushion. It comes preloaded with innocuous sounds, but allows you to upload your own. You can make your own fart machine if you so desire.
