Can't Access App Store via VPN?

I get stuck on the loading screen when I open up the App Store while on VPN. Also when I use VPN, I can't access iTunes. It gives me the screen that says, "Cannot Connect to the iTunes Store."

I thought using VPN is like using Wi-Fi except that it's more secure. Is there something with VPN that's preventing me from accessing both places?

When you are connected to a VPN, you loose your personal connection to anything that is not within the VPN. If they have specific ports, or the entire net (aside from VPN) blocked, then you are screwed.
