View Full Version : Question about Backups on a Jailbroken 3G

Just jailbroke my white 3G for the first time. Previous experience with jailbreaks on my 1st gen and Touch didn't include the new Back-up function of iTunes. My question is, what happens when iTunes does a backup of a jailbroken iPhone? I'm sure it doesn't back-up the jb apps, but, do I have to worry about the backup being corrupted? If I choose to restore to a non-jailbroken ipsw, I'd like to be able to use my backup so I don't lose app data. Will my iPhone be all wonky because it was jailbroken? This is the biggest reason I haven't jailbroken yet. I don't want to lose my app data every time an update is released or if I have to restore.
tnx.

When the new 2.0.1 update came out, those with JB phones that updated, reported the phone was updated and working fine, but it was no longer broken. (same with me) The best thing to do is simply wait a few days for the pwnage tool to get updated first and use that to get the update and remain jailbroken.

2.0 backups seem to work fine for me
but backing-up 2.01 seems to take forever (i restarted the process about 3 times because i wasnt sure whether or not it was actually going or not)

I'm kinda of confused here.....
been scouring here and google for help on this, but haven't seen anything that answers my questions
ok, I want to jailbreak my 3g iphone. iphone is updated to 2.0.1 and itunes is updated with latest update...I don't what the numbers are there
so now for the questions:
before I follow the step by step instructions of jailbreaking from
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1558
do I 1st want to do a complete backup through itunes?
after it is jailbroken, and apple releases a new update.....how do I then update the iphone?
also when it is jailbroken, and I connect it to my mac computer, does it sync with itunes? like it currently does anytime i connect it to my mac?
if I want to un jailbreak the iphone, how do I do that?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)
I have been wondering what happens to all my settings in a jailbroken phone if I want to update. I already have jailbroken 2.0 but to get 2.0.1 do I have to lose everything when I restore?

Just did my first jailbreak and wondering the same thing...I've had a lot of fun this weekend learning about all the stuff that out's there and have been really tweaking my phone. I'm guessing when I update it will all go away, but it's been a lot of fun learning.

Backup still works with both itunes, mac and windows, with 2.0.1. I just jb mine with my mac, and my gf's and she has a pc. both backups were fine, mobileme synced, everything good. took FOREVER and EVER and EVER and EVER ( you get the picture :D) tho...
edit - anything ssh'd or installed via cydia is lost tho of course

So there is no way to back these up really? Best bet to just have Pwnage install them on PWN?

Yea you'll lose all of your themes, replaced logos, SSH'd apps, Cydia installed apps, etc...but you'll keep email, sms, etc setting. Basically the official stuff will get restored. Would love a real backup that would handle all the customized stuff, takes a long time to get all that set up and installed.

It'd be nice if you could pull your image from your phone... pwn that... then put it back. So you'd have your same stuff.
