Hi,
I'm a co-owner of a small Mac software company and was looking for a good piece of software that I may be able to use to easily make and manage forums on my website.
I'm not concerned wether it is shareware or freeware but I haven't been able to find anything good like this for Mac OS X.
Thanks

vBulletin. Best forum software available, in fact it is what Mac Rumours uses :).

Something like Macrumors? I wish I could remember the name of what this sort of forum is built on.

Hint: It says at the bottom of every forum page :).

Mac is built on Unix so most of the forum software out there will run on it. Very little is Windows specific actually. You shouldn't have any trouble locating forum software.

I use SMF (simplemachines.org (http://simplemachines.org)) on the server side. It's free, easy, works very well, and has a TON of themes.

Do you want to host your own website or have someone else do the hosting. Remember that web hosting is 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. You must have a redundant connection with at least two web servers to start out. Or you can pay someone else to host. I use www.1and1.com to host my web pages. They run on linux which is specifically tailored to run most of the web 2.0 applications such as bulletin boards. If you're going to host your own you will need to customize your apache installation, install php, install php extensions, install a database like mysql and configure the scripts.
If you need help setting up a forum or want to discuss more, send me an e-mail and I can get you setup. fuzor_silverbolt@hotmail.com

hostgator is a good hosting provider too. They give you all the bells and whistles, including shell access. I recommend them. (No I don't work for them.)
