Thought this was interesting. It is amazing that, roughly 40 years ago, the Star Trek Communicator on the left was thought to be "science fantasy". How in the world could there be a wireless device you could hold in your hand to TALK to someone hundreds or thousands of miles away??? Now, that amazing fictional device looks HUGE next to the iPhone. Back then, something like the iPhone wasn't even imaginable.

Wonder what cell phones will do 40 years from now?

Live long and...

Oh, you know.

You know, I've always thought that if someone came up with a replica Uhura earpiece, but have it be an actual, functional Bluetooth headset with the electronics hidden inside, it would be a huge seller, just for the gag value of it:

Heck, and consider that the iPhone also does half the stuff the old tricorder used to do, and you've got one compact device!

Well, it doesn't have to be a solid hunk of metal. :)

Ah, but it lacks the tres-groovy 1 inch CRT screen. :)

Star Trek was always considered to be "good science fiction"

most of the ideas were based on common theories, faster then light speed travel, worm wholes, ect.

What about worm half, is that less than the whole?

half a worm whole is better than none.

Anyway, looks like some people are getting geared up for Star Trek online (http://www.startrekonline.com/).

I've been saying that for years... In the meantime, I'll have to amuse myself by getting one of these:

ThinkGeek Bluetooth Retro Handset (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/8928/)

Ah, but it lacks the tres-groovy 1 inch CRT screen.

Nothing like that plastic fantastic 1960s retro charm. Does it come in ugly green and orange, or a nice ass brown color as well?

And the retro bluetooth handset: comedy gold. I would totally get one if it came in red, that way I could feel like I was launching nuclear missiles from a sub.

If a company made a cell phone that was identical to the communicator and made the same sound when you open the communicator, that would be a major seller imo.

Indeed, and I suspect that there's many that would want to but couldn't cut a deal with Paramount.
