well besides the fact that I got a 20 gig for X-mas, why settle for 4 gigs when for $50 more I can get a 15? That is a great deal, 11 more gigs for $50.

I'm primarily a drummer, but I play a bit of keyboard and guitar as well (I'll be interested to plug my electric bass into GarageBand and see what kind of result I get.) I've also been learning to play the chromatic accordion for the past six months (it's got buttons instead of piano keys).
I currently use Ableton Live to compose and remix... and I'm really looking forward to firing up GarageBand (yes, I know I can't re-wire them together... but I can export my Garageband tracks and re-import them into Live for further manipulation. I can't wait!)

I play the sax. (I would've had to vote "not currently" except I picked up my horn and started practicing again a few weeks ago.) My own saxophone is a black lacquered Yamaha YTS-875 Custom tenor, but I consider the baritone sax to be my specialty. I used to play in a Big Band, a military band, and an R&B band.
I'm eagerly waiting for GarageBand to be released here. I'm also interested in the Mac version of Finale 2004.

My dad writes a lot of music, but he switched to Sibelius a few years ago, have you heard of that program? He used to use Finale previously.
By the way, my instrument is trumpet, and a little piano, and I love playing cello, but I don't own one, so I never practice, lol.

I use to try to play the guitar and i gave it up because i lacked the patience and the time. But GarageBand is something i am interested in. Just like with a guitar i could create mediocure music to entertain myself with.

I'll be the oddball and admit the only thing I can play is my ipod. I have abosolutely no musical ability. I was in our middle school band and played drums for a brief time and I was horrible!
I did purchase iLife mainly for iDVD and now the other iApps. I really don't know what I'll do with Garageband... who knows maybe I'll learn to play an instrument now?

I play guitar primarily, I'm OK at bass, poor at drums, dabbled at piano but gave it up. I'm looking forward to GarageBand just to work on my guitar chops.
I have a feeling there's a lot of people that are going to be disappointed with GarageBand, either they'll expect it to do too much or they'll realize that they lack the talent to do anything more than link a bunch of loops together....

Does anyone know if Garage Band has a proprietary file format? I play keyboard and have friends who play keyboard and guitar. As we all use Macs, yet live in different cities, I wonder if I'd be able to burn a Garage Band session onto a CD-R (I'm assuming that with vocals, the file size would be HUGE), so that we can compose songs together? Or, do I need to buy a new mini iPod, to save Garage Band sessions onto then ship it from city to city? ;)
One of us is fluent with ProTools LE (and a Digi 001), I just got an M-Box with ProTools LE for x-mas, and the third only uses his Mac for music when he visits his brother (with the Digi 001). I'm hoping Garage Band will prove to be simple enough for the three of us to put together simple jam session (albeit less polished than with ProTools).

I'd assume that you could pass the 'base' file around to your friends pretty efficiently, that is, the one that would just contain the data of what loops, how many repeats, volume settings, etc. That file would be rather small because it wouldn't contain the actual loops, but rather the outline of the song. I also assume that anything you add to that (ie vocals) would be a rather large file, but nothing you couldn't fit on a CD. You'd just need to be careful of the permission settings for your friends to use it (maybe), and figure out where GarageBand would store any recorded files. The worst case scenario is that you save the entire file as mp3 or mp4 and your friends would import that stereo track into their program of choice...they wouldn't have control of the separate instruments, but they could add to it.
On a side note: I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned playing the skin flute. I'm sure there's more masters of that than care to admit!!! :D :D :D

Does singing count? If so, then yes. A person's voice, if used properly, can be considered a musical instrument.
I took piano lessons when I was 6. I sucked. Didn't have the patience for it. It took way too long to get a nice sound. With singing, you get instant results. One can always get better, of course, but in general it's much easier to be on pitch singing (at least for me).

Well at one time I could play the piano (currently restricted to playing chopsticks or the theme from Frogger) and I bet I could still play the trombone or trumpet adequtely after a couple of hours of practice. But I still actively play guitar, (I've got a Jap Stratocaster, and a Yamaha acoustic) the thing is I just tinker with it and don't really practice... and I need the practice.
If I ever get the iLife pack I'll tinker with Garageband for sure, but I don't think it will result in a different carrer :)

Trumpet, Piano, a little bit of blues harmonica (still learning), kazoo (if it counts), french horn, flugal horn, cornet... and a couple more... it normally takes me an hour to figure out how to play an instrument...
Playing them well... hahaha... now that's a different story...

I was referring to a type of choir called a Madrigal choir. Madrigals sing typically 4 part harmonies (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts). Pieces can get even more complicated with more parts, but are traditionally 4 part.

How do you plan on interfacing your sax to your computer?
I used to play the sax a while back and have been planning on picking it back up. I'd need to buy a sax, as I don't currently have one. I'm also looking forward to GarageBand, but don't know how to marry the two together!

Not only am I impressed by the obvious musicality of this group, I'm surprised at the number of us who play wind instruments. I play trumpet...I used to be pretty good, but I haven't kept it up over the past 15 years. I've picked it up again over the past few months, and I'm now able to play stuff I played back in '79. Hopefully, with a few more months of practise, I'll be able to play some fun stuff.
GarageBand seems targeted to the electric guitar player, but I can see it being useful for anyone, even singers.
What I'm wondering is whether I'll be able to use GarageBand to fix my tone, as well as the simple splicing together multiple takes, correcting intonation, and adjusting tempo. The one aspect of my playing that's taking the longest to come back is my sound...I currently sound sort of like someone blowing a snorkel :-(.
Cheers

Cool,
My cousin played steel drums (he passed away three years ago), I love the sound. But to be honest I don't know anything about the various types, he played two and they were very shallow. He also had one that he made while on vacation in Jamaica (I think that's where he went), I remember him saying what a pain it was to get it home with him on the plane.
I play Alto Sax, but it's been a few years since I've done any real playing. My niece is already begging me to get her GarageBand (she's learning piano)
I agree with crazytom's post that many may wind up disappointed with GarageBand, not because of the program, but because of too high expectations. Making anything beyond basic loops does take a little natural music ability, something many think they have but may soon find that they don't.

Well, you can hook up a microphone to GarageBand, right? That's what I'll do. The internal mic will probably sound lousy but it'll have to do in the beginning. As mentioned below, there IS another option:

I've seen that Casio one before. It's more of a toy compared to the Yamaha one. Akai is the leader in professional electronic wind instruments (or "EWI"). I was looking into the Yamaha WX-5 but the Akai (pictured below) has better reviews. The only problem is that you have to purchase a module with it. Total cost- about $1000.
Squire
<edit: I guess I didn't answer your question, did I, neut? The Yamaha and Akai (and to a certain extent, that Casio model) are basically synthesizers for woodwind players. They're probably easiest for sax players because of the fingering and size, but apparently, you don't have to have any musical ability to get a sound. Just like a synth. By selecting different sounds on the module, you can make the EWI sound like an electric guitar, trombone, whatever. The shape of these is not at all relevant because there's no air going through them to make the sound (although they do have breath sensors and reeds).>

I'm studying music education in college right now, so I'm definitely into music. I play the guitar and the piano and sing tenor in choir, baritone for solo work.
http://www.inetrealtors.com/wright.mp3
I think that's a link to an MP3 of me singing at a recital earlier this year. My apologies for the crappy-ass pitch on the second song.
Baritones have it really bad though. The basses are always kings and emperors and such, the tenor always gets the girl in the end, and the baritones lose the girl to the tenor just in time to kick the bucket.

I played in the symphony orchestra for 7 years, from when I was 12-19 years old, and recently I've played off and on with a lot of groups, including occassional stints with the symphony when they need me. I love composing and tracking on my computer though, (electronica), and that's what I focus on primarily nowadays.

Is there a tabu against posting in threads that are over 3 weeks old? I found this a fascintaing thread, read the whole thing just now, and it doesn't seem ill-advised to add to it, as long as the post is on-topic.
I am returning to guitar after some years of neglect (due to an uncontrollable mania for dancing). Over the years, I've tinkered a bit with sax, bass, drums, singing, piano, and pennywhistle. I even rented a violin for a couple of painful weeks.
Having seen the GarageBand demo, I'm now looking around at MIDI keyboard controllers to play all those "Software Instruments" and audio interfaces to pull my guitar's sound into my Mac.
Steve Jobs made that defensive comment at the keynote about "is this a niche market? No...." He was absolutely correct. I'll bet the response is surprising even him. Lots of musicians and ex-musicians use Macs, and MacRumors. GarageBand is going to be really fun for many of them.
I tried to buy iTunes '04/GarageBand at our college bookstore on Jan. 24 to celebrate the Mac's birthday, but they'd sold out. They've had it on order ever since but haven't been able to get it in stock. Another hit for Apple?
Cheers,
Crikey

I think the rule is: If it's over 3 weeks old, you're supposed to be off topic. ;) I'm going to tread on some dangerous ground here. I should be getting my copy of GarageBand this week and then I'll be back practicing my sax daily. I'm not in a band anymore (haven't been for 8 years) so practicing alone isn't quite as interesting.

I play my mac. GarbageCan... oops I mean GarageBand is pretty cool -- don't know another app that can do mixing that well and that easily for such a low cost (basically free). Anyways I mostly use my home 'puter for Finale right now, and a little sequencing and audio editing (currently, an old version of Cubase, saving for new computer and release of Logic Pro).
As for other ("real") instruments: piano, clarinet, tenor sax, and I mess around with guitar and drums just for fun (and something to do while drinking with roommates).

Oh yeah -- and a friend of mine can play the pants-zipper pretty well (using a vocal mic for amplification)

Hey Urdam - just going through the old polls and submitting one-sentence replies with little substance to bump up your post count? ;) This is the 4th or 5th old poll now that I see you doing this on...
Edit: Oh wait, you're banned...

It's neat to go back through old posts and make a mental note of what not to do. I'll quote one of his longer replies:
wow, that took waaay to long

P.S. Do people normally get a warning for that stuff (submitting ultra-short responses of little substance) or do they just get hit with the ban out of the blue?

I don't think that something as serious as banning is something to joke about. As long and you are thoughtful in your post, then there isn't a problem. There are rules at the top of every thread to follow.

Wdlove,
I agree. I'd feel pretty bad reading insensitive posts about my getting banned. That said, I wasn't actually joking; it was something I was truly curious about. I've heard of cases where people upset someone else or offended multiple members but in this case, the offense was just (to my knowledge, at least) the really short posts.
Now, back on topic...
I just bought a guitar last week. It feels strange going from being a higher-level player on one instrument to a complete novice on another but, with some practice, I should be able to strum out a tune or two. ("Ode to Joy" rules.) And the more I play around with GarageBand, the more I realize how cool it is. I can't wait to buy an electric guitar and that Monster Cable adapter.

I think this is a really good topic to discuss, no matter how old the thread. Music is very important to me and this poll, when I saw it today (4/26/04), was particularly absorbing.
I’m a drummer and have been for the past 16 years. I am an expert musician in most all areas of percussion including hand drumming, mallet percussion, timpani, marching percussion, rudimental snare drum, drum set, Latin percussion, etc.
I love drums and live for them. In 1999 I played marching snare drum in the world class Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps (a program of Youth Education in The Arts, with performing members from all over the country. The corps travels over 15,000 miles during the summer entertaining hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the nation.)
You should check the Crossmen out this summer!
I would be very curious to see if any other drum corps guys are lurking these forums. If you are one, let me know!
Anyway, it is great to see so many musicians who are also into Macs. For me, it’s obvious that the two go hand in hand. Also, as was posted earlier, it is awesome to see so many wind instrument players, not just guitar and piano players (which is equally awesome).
In addition to playing percussion, I also teach drums at the high school, college, and drum corps levels. Besides that, I spend a lot of time playing acoustic guitar, which I thoroughly enjoy.
Keep playing!

I'm a student of musicology but my playing abilities are limited. However, I can find my way around the piano, guitar, bass, and trumpet. Digital Performer is my sequencing/mixing software of choice. I got Soundtrack about a year ago, is there a big difference between that and GarageBand? I haven't seen this relatively new software yet.

I’m a drummer and have been for the past 16 years. My brother plays in a drum corps too. I've always teased him by saying that he didn't play a real instrument since it couldn't play a scale (I play the trumpet), but I knew enough to hold my tongue at a party a few days ago where he was there with all his drum corps friends. They might have poked me to death with their drumsticks or pointed out that they can chew gum while playing and I can't!
I think it's good to have a friendly rivalry between the different sections in a concert or marching band.

Oh yeah, we always had rivalries. Mostly between brass and woodwinds. Our percussion players were usually in their own world. Being a trumpet player, our best rivalries were with the flutes/pics :D
