Hello,
I've just noticed some users seem to manage to get small custom graphics inline with their text, not in the sig.
Let's say I had a small gif that was a custom smiley (for instance)
Could I insert it in a post? If so how? Had a quick play and the closest I can see is an attached image which isn't quite what I wanted to do?

I generally use the external image tag. For example, to do this:
that sucks http://pxuk.net/up/files/1/macrumors/Disappointed.tiff
You'd need to do the following:
that sucks http://path.to/your/file.jpg
Alternatively you can use the image attachment. Instead of leaving the attached image as is, once you've uploaded it to the MacRumors server, preview your post. Once in the preview, use the drop down to the right of the paperclip icon to select your attachment. You'll get some VBCode like 130199, which you can then place where you need... for example the first example would become:
that sucks 130199
This is how people put images in their posts without showing as attachments, too.

That's correct...you would have to attach the image to each post you wanted to use it in. Which is why people frequently prefer to host their images elsewhere, or just hotlink from somewhere else if it already exists on the web, although the latter option is frequently considered a no-no due to it using the hoster's bandwidth, not to mention increasing the likelihood of the image disappearing over time.
