Does anybody think the new iPod touch prices could be $200?

no. why?

I don't think so, just because the iPhone is priced due to a subsidy. Also, no contract required for the touch.

I'm selling my Old iPod touch for $200, so I'm hoping I could buy one for that price.

They could be. But they probably won't be.

Well...
Then what do you think the LOWEST price might be for a new one? Just forget about the memory, think of the price. For all we know, Apple might drop the 8gb and replace it with the 16gb, and introduce a higher capacity.

I do not think that there will be, and I really wish that people would use the search function, here is what I found from a search that you could have done:

I think the most the price could drop would be $50. Good luck selling a year old iPod for the price of a brand new one. (Nice logic!)

I'm gonna laugh when they do sell it for $200.
Whatever.

and why would apple do that? It's not like the iPod touch can be subsidized like the iPhone.
I bet you were one of the people who believed that Apple had hidden another camera in the iPhone 3G and for some reason didn't tell people it was there.

Not really... I didn't even know somebody thought that. Whoever did, was stupid. Seriously....

I could say the same about those who think Apple will drop the price of the iPod touch and get rid of the 8GB model. A 16GB iPod touch for $200? Yeah... that won't cut into iPod nano sales.

On the original question: Yes, but it's unlikely. Memory prices have come down enough in the last year to make the Touch cheaper to build. Apple could also have the circuit components condensed onto one chip. There is a larger market for touchscreens, so they may be getting cheaper.
I think Apple will instead keep the prices the same, but move the memory capacity up at each price point. They may also throw in some additional hardware (bluetooth, GPS?) to justify keeping prices where they are. If the Touch gets cheaper, then every other iPod below it has to get cheaper too. Very unlikely Apple will let that happen. It's more likely they'll do the "shuffle". They lowered the price on the 1gig shuffle and introduced a 2gig version at the previous 1gig price. You might be able to buy an 8gb Touch for $249, with the 16gb Touch moving to $299, 32gb moving to $399, and perhaps a 48gb or 64gb version taking the top spot.
Time will tell.

48GB? as in 16+32? That's unlikely, for the storage system to operate properly the chip sizes must be equal capacity.

It will be very interesting to see if they add GPS. I hope they do and I hope they don't. The government will be tracking every iPod Touch out there.

Just give me your ipod then. I would gladly take it off you hands. Then you won't have to sell it and worry if you can buy a newer(arguably better) ipod for the same price. On second thought, don't get so upset. Be grateful for what you have.

Doubt it.
At this price, it would cut into the Nano sales.
My guess, same price points but with more memory. So instead of 8, 16, and 32, we'll see 16, 32 and 64 models at the same prices.
The government will be tracking every iPod Touch out there.
The word paranoid comes to mind. ;)

Not necessarily. It wouldn't take much to add support for non-matched pairs. If the costs for 2x32 is close to being profitable but not close enough, 48GB could easily carry them over through the holidays at the $500 price point.

It's not like they just 'add support' for it. There are a lot of issues with why that won't work.

Examples being? They're issues with the software. If they want to fix them, they can.

Well it sort of works the way a striped RAID works, but the mechanics of it are a little different. It's not really an issue with software it's at least a firmware issue.

Here in New Zealand Vodafone has handset only prices on their website:
Vodafone NZ (http://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone/)
and as comparison the New Zealand Apple store iPod Touch prices:
Apple Store NZ (http://store.apple.com/nz/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch)
Summary (prices in NZD):
8GB 16GB
---------- ------- -------
iPod Touch 449.00 599.00
iPhone 979.00 1129.00
The iPhone costs 530 NZD more than the comparable iPod Touch!
Therefore I don't think the price of the next generation iPod Touch will be significantly lower.
I would guess no more 8GB model and the 16GB model starts at 449.00 NZD.

Right now 16gb chips are far cheaper than 32gb chips. Put three 16s in there to get 48. A nice memory bump that could probably be done for the same price a 32gb Touch cost last season. Just a theory. Apple may shock us all and put a 160gb hard drive in there.

This seems about right (besides the 48/64 GB). I don't think the 8 GB version will be $199 because the current 4 GB - 8 GB difference is $50, and so the upcoming 8 GB - 16 GB difference would also be $50.

GPS doesn't seem very useful on the Touch to me, unless they allow you to cache large maps first, or tie up some memory to have basic maps resident all the time. Think about it, any time you don't have a wifi connection the Touch could use GPS to find out where you're located (in lat & long), but wouldn't be able to update the map to show you. This means GPS would only be useful when you're within range of wifi that you can access for data (not just detect) -- how useful would that really be? When you're within range of wifi the Touch can usually already determine its location.
GPS on the iPhone allows it to more accurately and reliably determine its location than it could using the triangulation method, but is only useful on the iPhone because the iPhone has a full-time data connection. Even GPS on the iPhone is of questionable value if you're outside the 3G/EDGE data coverage area.

And really, that wouldn't be too difficult if Apple wanted to do it. Years ago, I had a GPS receiver add-on for my old Palm Pilot, and it came with a complete set of US street maps that fit on a single CDROM. So surely they could reserve a gigabyte or less space for users that wanted GPS+maps on the iPod touch. It could be optional for those who didn't want it taking up space.
Of course, I wouldn't expect Apple to do this - it would be far too useful!

you can buy a 8gig ipod touch refurbished which is as good as new for $209 online at the applestore.:apple:
and I don't know why you would sell your old ntouch to buy a new one. I don't think they will be that different.

See the iPod sold for $229.00 not the $200.00 that you said OP! If you waited 1 extra year, the costs did come down to $199.00 so.
