Does anyone know of any application that could function as a universal media remote? It would be killer to be able to use my iPhone as a dvd remote for my Xbox, similarly to how Apple's Remote app works for iTunes/Apple TV.

It would be cool.

And yet completely impossible as you can see.

Not unless each device works via WIFI. Find me a DVD player that works via WIFI and we'll talk. ;)

Hmm, maybe we spoke too soon...

Seems like it would cost some coin, having to set up a server, and/or a wifi to IR/RF converter, and signal boosters/repeaters.
Could be cool tho. Based on the Remote app alone, the iPhone blows every touchscreen remote I've tried out of the water.

True but what is the point really? The touch-screen logitech isn't all that bad, hell it's really wonderful.

eww, the harmony 1000? that mushy unresponsive screen? that horrible jingle it played? sold mine months ago and never looked back.

Take a look at www.airremote.com.
It is in Europe right now... hopefully it should be out here in the US soon. It is actually a practical solution. You need a $150 WiFi to IR converter (the page will tell you), then it turns the iphone/ipod touch into a RF style remote.
I just hope that it comes out in the US soon!

The PS3. Also, if Apple unlocked the bluetooth, it could work over bluetooth as well.

This solution for the pocket pc would be brilliant for the iphone. I just wish someone would do it. All the other solutions I've seen so far look like a nightmare to me.
