My brand new BTO MacBook Pro that I bought last month was stolen from my Car. It was only in my car because I went to the mall straight after work too.

It was the top end 17" 2.6, 200GB 72k, w/4GB ram. I also lost my mighty mouse and apple bluetooth keyboard that was in the bag.

I have no home insurrance to cover the replacement so now I'm out $3700 on my credit card with nothing to show for it. Oh and my Visa has no theft protection on it.

What a great start to the weekend...

Dude, that's horrible. I know my predicament isn't nearly as bad as yours... but my fifth generation iPod was stolen out of my car a couple weeks ago.

Anyway that royally sucks. What line of business are you in? Did you lose anything extremely important (documents)? Your computer was all password protected right?

Luckily I have time machine backups as well as Mobileme.

I just reinstalled the OS a few days ago so it really had nothing of value on there which is good, because I do use it for work as well. It was indeed password protected, but I wish I enabled the boot up password option.

When my iPod was stolen I didn't have any password protection on it and there was some pretty important (private) information on the iPod... I'm really scared of any repercussions of it getting stolen. However I'm pretty sure they'd just wipe the iPod and sell it, especially since it was formatted for a Mac.

I filled a police report yesterday right after it happened and gave them the serial #. There is a good chance it will show up in a pawn shop somewhere...

I also called Apple and they marked the serial # as stolen. So if for some reason the person decides to keep it and call for support they will be screwed.

Talk to the Apple Store people, have them flag it in the warranty database as stolen. Not likely to do anything, but worth a try. Do the police report thing, too.

Did you have it in your trunk, or on the seats?

Did you call the police? If you didn't go back and re-create the whole thing and call the police and go into the Mall Management's office. File under their insurance. Be insistent... give it a try. I bet they carry insurance for stuff like that. My son and all the patrons were robbed once at a restaurant and the Restaurant's insurance company paid everyone back the cash they lost.

I had my laptop stolen from my car's trunk in the parking lot of a store I owned. I immediately made a claim under my home owner's but they surrogated the claim with the store insurance I carried.

Did you check your auto insurance policy to see if it covered theft of contents? I am not totally sure, but some may. If anything at all it is at least worth the phone call.

Lesson learned, for probably $50 a year or less you can probably place the laptop on your scheduled property rider on your homeowner's policy.

Typically contents are not covered under an auto policy, only things that are bolted to the car. Contents are insured usually under a household or renter's policy, or by a business policy if they are tools or business goods.

The mall insurance will not cover you. You see the signs posted around the parking lot that say "you park at your own risk" and or "we are not responsible for your car" = disclaimer. You agreed to hold the mall blameless by parking there.

Sorry to hear about the theft!

I'd report this to the police and Apple. More than likely the thief will sell it ASAP so he/she will offer it and a buyer will ask for the S/N to check out. Eventually the computer will have some issue and the poor buyer will be found, but at least you may get your stuff back.

At work, we're told to take our laptops with us when we park. It is not a good idea to place your laptop in the trunk when you get to your destination as people may be watching and know what you're placing where. If you can't take it with you, put your laptop in the trunk prior to arriving at the destination. Of course, never leave it on a seat where it can be seen easily.

Unfortunately, unless crime happens you to, it is hard to believe that it can happen to you. Hope above common sense tips help someone.

The only way someone would be able to steal my laptop is if they boinked me on the head and pried it from my hands. Aside from insurance, the best way to protect your machine is NEVER let it out of your sight for even a second. If I stop at the mall, I have to carry my machine with me AT ALL TIMES. Better yet, I don't take it with me unless I foresee needing it. Any electronics that I carry that has a high value, I think of as an oxygen bottle and I'll die if it's not in my immediate grasp at all times. If you're the type of person who's not willing keep an eye on your stuff 100% of the time, then you should leave it home.. certainly not in your car. Of course, this advice won't help the person who has already lost their laptop... but it might help someone else.

A couple of years ago, I had my work van broken into and had my generic cheapo 20gb mp3 player stolen from the front seat where I accidentally left it sitting.

Since I needed a new mp3 player and I had some extra spare cash, I decided to see what all the fuss was about these 'iPod' thingies. I bought myself a black 80gb 5th gen iPod and from the second I switched it on I was in love with the thing.

I had never witnessed the Apple style before and couldn't believe how lovely and polished a simple music player could be. Since buying this device I have become a complete Apple nut and have since bought...

160gb iPod Classic
2 iPhones (original and 3G)
2 iPod nanos and an iPod mini for relatives
an iBook G4 for my wife
a MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz
a 1.66Ghx Mac Mini
a 1.83Ghz MacBook
countless older ipods and some old G3 iMacs as restoration projects

The point of all this is to point out that this one terrible event caused me to completely change the way I look at electronics and computing. I was a complete Windows devotee ever since the 3.0 days, now I don't have a single Windows machine left in my house. Were it not for getting my cheapo mp3 player stolen I might never have discovered the world of Apple.

You have every right to be pissed at what happened; I'm awfully sorry to learn of it, and I can understand your rage at the sheer hateful injustice of it all. Some years ago, I was robbed - credit card, debit card had to be cancelled, airline tickets changed (they weren't stolen, but I had been due to fly out on a business trip the following day) all kinds of personal stuff, blood group card, etc. all taken. Fortunately, I was able to cancel the cards in time - some took ages to be replaced - and the robbers only got away with the contents of my wallet. My European liberal instincts fled, as I wished Hell's foulest torments on the ill-begotten thieves, and still do, the sense of violation is very strong. A rotten thing to happen, you have my full and deep sympathy. Cheers.

As some here have mentioned, keep small expensive things in your hands. If it's easy enough for someone else to walk off with it, you should walk off with it yourself. There are no neighborhoods where crime doesn't take place. 30+ years ago, in a very nice neighborhood where i grew up, someone got into my mom's car (that was parked up away from the street), used the garage door opener to get into the garage and took everything of value. That's in an upscale town in the 70's, where "no crime took place".

Even playing it smart, things will get stolen. Insurance is a good move, and then there are tools like this:

I bought a family license and put it on all our Macs.

Few tips:
-Don't ever put something of great value on the seats or anywhere else where you can see it from outside! (I'm not the first to tell you this, but it's truly very important!!)

-Get a bag that does not say: "very expensive stuff in here, come and steel it..".
The point is that laptop baggs, DSLR baggs, or what so ever are mostly very recognizable. People can immediately tell what is them and they know it's of great value. An advice is to buy a regular backpack.

Something you might also wanna check is surveillance camera's if there are any near the spot where you parked your car.

This is exactly why I carry my MBP everywhere, into restaurants, malls, stores etc... if I must stop on the way home. My family thinks its a bit much but unless someone sticks a gun in my face and takes it, I'm not letting it out of my sight.

There ought to be someplace people can donate to handle tragedies like this. Most people cannot afford to lose $3700. I would donate $50. The problem is some lowlife would fake a theft to scam the money. Truly sad!

Assuming you have everything backed up and your MBP is then stolen. Is there a software you can install that can be activated by you that will wipe out your hard drive and corrupt the laptop in a way that it can not be ruined (e.g. overheated)? Of course if it accidentally gets activated while you're working on it, that would be upsetting. Maybe I've seen too many Bond films.

I did go to the Apple store twice about this - to see if they could do anything. I was on a trip and didn't have the serial number with me so I went to a local Apple store (around 5 min away) to try to get it. They wouldn't give me my serial number without my credit card number, which changed right before that. Needless to say, the guy (Apple store employee) was a complete jerk to me.

Anyways, I went back to the apple store after I got home and had my reciept. Haven't heard a peep from them... Whatever.

Also, my car insurance DIDN'T cover the theft, but my home-owners insurance DID. To the OP - talk to your home-owners insurance if you have it. Mine was a $1000 deductable . All in all, I got a check for $600 for a stolen backpack, TI89 calc, 9 month old blackbook, various supplies. They also broke a car window, and bent the door very badly(they tried to crowbar the door and pop the lock... didn't work on an '08 GTI). $3000 damage to the car. That made my trip miserable.

Rental insurance is so unbelievably cheap. Everyone should have it.

I also have riders for my camera gear (any type of loss) and riders for accidental loss of my computer stuff (laptops - even spills are covered).

$20 a month.

What a great start to the weekend...

I feel for you, man. The exact same thing happened to me several years ago with my 15" 1GHz TiBook (a $3,500 BTO laptop at the time). But mine was left in the hatch area of my car (not exactly visible) while I was running up to my friend's apartment to grab him for lunch. In the matter of minutes, someone had broken into my car and stole the laptop and my Kenwood stereo. No homeowner's insurance and I was still paying for the laptop. Wasn't fun at all...

So, I know you've heard this before, but NEVER EVER leave anything of value in your car, no matter what. A thief can see you putting something in your car from far away. I won't even leave my $130 Nintendo DS in my car. Following this rule for myself, I haven't been a victim of theft since.

Secondly, get renters home owners insurance NOW. It has to be about the cheapest insurance policy you can get. My apartment is covered for up to $200,000 (more than adequate) and I only pay about $25/month. Typically, this type of insurance will cover belongings stolen out of your vehicle with a deductible.

So right now, the best you can really do is hope things work out, although the odds are against you. I reported my serial number as stolen with Apple, yet my laptop was never recovered. Hard lesson learned.

Wow. That sucks. I bought my wife a new Macbook for Christmas 2006 and less than 2 months later it was stolen from her car. We filed a police report with the serial number but heard nothing from it and she had to wait till Christmas 2007 for me to buy her another one.

You made her wait a year? Thats pretty cold. It obviously wasn't her fault.

sorry to hear that
definitely your worst day ever man

No offense but, short of Jesus Christ hearing your prayers and coming down and handing it to you himself, you are never gonna see it again

Well, you live you learn,

He might not be rich and therefore can't afford 2 laptops in a short span of time.

My brand new BTO MacBook Pro that I bought last month was stolen from my Car. It was only in my car because I went to the mall straight after work too.

I feel really bad for you. I'd be climbing the walls and kicking myself in the butt for months.

Go to the Police and file a report
Call all your local pawnshops and inquire if they have any MacBooks for sale
Check Craigslist for new MacBooks on Sale
Check Ebay for new MacBooks on Sale (I realize its a long shot)
Always put your electronics in your trunk (which can only be opened with a key) when you leave them in your car.

You've got your serial number from your purchase, so if you're able to find you MacBook in any of these places you can legally prove it is yours and retrieve it.

I'm hoping you're able to retrieve your stolen MacBook and that the perpetrators get what's coming to them.

I hope that was a joke. Not everyone can afford to buy a new Mac whenever they please.

A lot of newer cars have trunk areas that are accessible by folding down the rear seats (and only some of these cars have lock cylinders on the rear seats). While the trunk might be the safest place to keep electronics, it's not exactly fail-safe anymore with a lot of cars.

My GTI's rear hatch can't be opened from the outside without the key fob, but there's still two other ways to get into the cargo compartment provided a thief were to break in through one of the windows (switch on the driver's door and fold-down latch on the rear seat). So, I don't keep expensive stuff in there. Not even for 5 minutes.

Yeah, but that's assuming the thief knows the computer's in the trunk!

On a side note, I just got insurance for $100. Too lazy to bother my homeowner's insurance.

That's exactly what I did... literally cried tears all night and couldn't sleep.

As someone already said in this post, the notebook is just an object that can be replaceable. Loosing it is NOTHING compared to loosing a loved person.
