iMac G4: No audio on external outputs

Cannot get either external speaker output or headphone output to work. If I move the volume fader up or down in system pref, I get a crackling sound from the internal speaker but nothing else. can someone help me ?

Still have the Imac G4 audio problem

Please!! anybody know why I cannot get audio out of my imac? I get chime on start up and shutdown but nothing else, no sound alerts or anything else, help please!!
