As predicted (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/18/iphone-firmware-2-0-2-due-today/) in a last minute rumor, Apple has released the newest 2.0.2 firmware for the iPhone.

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/08/18/173710-iphone201_400.jpg

Apple helpfully describes the update as "Bug Fixes". It's not yet known if this software updates fixes rumored 3G connectivity issues. Steve Jobs was said to have promised (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/18/iphone-3g-connectivity-affecting-2-of-customers-software-fix-soon/) a software patch "soon" to address that issue.

I'll wait and see what this is going to do, reception sucks with 2.0 or 2.0.1 but I could still make and receive calls.

Apple is seriously starting to be like M$

Your point is? They fixed some bug fixes, but all the 3G downloads are larger than the iPhone EDGE downloads, which are larger than the iPod Touch downloads, so likely they had the base OS update, then an EDGE update, and then a 3G update depending on which device is downloading the update.

Downloading now for iPod touch. When I first updated to 2.01 I found it nice and fast, but eventually it lagged alot, especially going into my contacts list. And I was getting 'low free memory' errors from apps when I have 1.4gb free on my 16gb touch.

I am glad they seem to be trying to keep up with the fixes though :)

Actually, I think we all have to have the update since it is firmware...

iPod touch and iPhone firmware updates have thus far not always been simultaneous releases...

Not that I'll be downloading it immediately; I'll wait till the iPhone Dev Team has had a chance to look at it... :D

Every update will be the same size since it'll be the entire firmware being replaced.

I have noticed a"snappier" interface, but the same thing happened with the last update which eventually became laggy again.

I'm saying that users who's iPhones frequently drop 3G signal (which has been well documented on this site and its forums) aren't going to see an improvement as the update is for iPod Touch users as well

And everything is snappier after the update, especially Safari... even on my Macbook! :)

Okay, here's what I see so far in terms of signal integrity:

3G reception does NOT appear to be improved at this point (and yes, I am one of the "2%" problem children). Oddly, my EDGE reception DOES appear to be better off---5 bars consistently where I was getting 3-4 before. I've also noticed that the one time I did see a 3G signal, I switched over from 3G to EDGE at around 2 bars, rather than "No Service".

i have first gen iphone and idk about u but i noticed worst reception with the last update especially with edge disappearing randomly where i have 5 bars and back on 1.x.x had no problem with it (and i think 2.0 too but not positive about that one) seems to be good now but its only been like 20 minutes since i updates so idk

After 2.0.1 my girlfriends iPhone backup went from like 2.5 hours down to 20 - 25 minutes, I hope it improves even more since she only has applications installed. (Well, 650MB of applications)

Update downloading right now. Unfortunately, no 3G yet in NH (supposedly coming in October/November), but I am hopeful this helps with EDGE coverage. At my desk at work I have reception issues, so hopefully this helps.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this before but people keep complaining that they have to wait ages to back up. When your backing up in iTunes you can just click the little cross next to the status box and it will just cancel the backup but continue with the rest of the syncing.

So there! :p

I think most people aren't understanding about backing up there iPhone/iPod touch. If you backed up 20 minutes ago before you updated, then it's going to go a lot faster. This is due to the fact that backups take longer if you changed your iPod/iPhone around a lot since the previous backup. So, if you deleted 20 apps, and added 15, the backup is going to take a LOT longer then before.

That's basically the reason why initially backups are faster, but wait a couple of days without backing up and you will know if backups are actually indeed faster.

Workarounds are different than fixes. I think people want to have backups, they just dont want them to take two hours.

Originally, my phone took about an hour and a half to do a backup on the 2.0 firmware. On 2.0.2 it takes about 25 minutes to do an initial backup and then only 20 seconds or so to do subsequent backups (presuming I didn't install any new applications). I think this is completely satisfactory...

Your point is? They fixed some bug fixes, but all the 3G downloads are larger than the iPhone EDGE downloads, which are larger than the iPod Touch downloads, so likely they had the base OS update, then an EDGE update, and then a 3G update depending on which device is downloading the update.

TEG

His point is: "it won't fix 3G connectivity most likely as iPod Touch has the 2.0.2 update as well.":D

i dont know why everyone is having such long backups... and when i say long, I'm talking about the ones complaining about 1-2hr backups. even with the 2.0 firmware, a backup for my iphone was 10minutes at the MOST. and that's with applications constantly being added and deleted. Also, I am "part of the 2% minority."

However, I called apple and they scheduled an appt with me at the genius bar to get brand new phones tomorrow. me and my boyfriend both have problems... so im hoping we get phones from a "good batch."

I have found my brand new iPhone 3G works best if I never attach it to my computer, just a wall plug. Haven't figured out anything beyond that . . .

The GPS is better for me after the update.

Before - Very zoomed out view of the map...I'm talking so zoomed out it shows the nearest city 30 miles from here. Takes a long time to pinpoint my location. Sometimes, I don't even get a pin, just the circle.

After - Goes from the zoomed out view to the pin a bit faster...although subjective.....I never clocked it.

I updated my 2G iPhone 2.0.1 through iTunes to 2.0.2 and it is still unlocked and jailbroken. Also the T-Zones hack I installed back on 2.0.0 still works with 2.0.2. Unfortunately I can not say wether it removes apps downloaded through Installer or Cydia since I did not repwn my phone after upgrading 2.0.0 to 2.0.1. I'm guessing that those apps will be removed like last time.

So, this is the second time that upon updating the firmware for "bug fixes" from my PC that my iPhone 3g has gone into recovery mode. The only solution has been for me to restore it from a Mac at the genius bar. This is so annoying and not the way to update my phone from home. I did it reluctantly this time, hoping praying that it would work - knowing that the last time I even reinstalled every apple product on the computer.

Anyone else have this problem? It has been "verifying" for 30+ minutes - and right before it entered this phase it kicked my computer of the interwebs! the iPhone just shows the usb cable and iTunes. nothing more.

Buy a Mac....

Or you can try to make a new iTunes Library.

1.Quit iTunes
2. Hold SHIFT and click on the iTunes laucher
3. Create a new iTunes Library
4. In that library restore your iPhone
5. Go back to your normal library and sync your phone

I work in an office building smack in the center of a town with 3G. With 2.0 and 2.0.1, I never saw 3G indicated inside my building. I momentarily saw it while the update was going on, but now it has fallen back to EDGE (that's FINE with me if it drops less), and there are more bars. 4-5 consistently, where it was 2-4--all over the place really, on 2.0.1.

I'm noticing the same apparent snappierness that I thought I saw with 2.0.1, but then that went away.

Where I really had the problem with dropping and random signal was while driving, though I also had it just sitting in place. I go out of one 3G area and through two more on my way home with EDGE in between, and a dead zone that was much smaller on my 2G iphone (about 15 seconds at 65mph versus 1-2 minutes) I'll report back after I try that experiment.

I've had this for about an hour, which, with 3G enabled but not connected would have moved my battery bar before, and has not so far this time. Hard to conclude anything solid without more time though.

I just finished the update and they still haven't addressed the incredibility slow application installs. Apps tend to sit at the "installing" status with the progress bar at the end for a few mins.

They also haven't fixed the issue with updating applications and it placing the updated version on the last screen. Every time I get my apps setup how I want, I do an update and it now my app is at the end. Its very annoying especially when you have a lot of applications.

Wish list off the top of my head:

- Separate volume control for applications, sharing it with the ringer means I miss many calls if I forget the volume low.
- Vibrate should mute apps
- Why can't I assign the camera to double click home button or any other application ?!
- Ring tone settings for calendar and email
- Push support for something other then MobileMe (Hell, I would even settle for Yahoo at this point)

Many people say 'this update makes my phone feel snappier' after these firmware releases. Well, I'd just like to note that you're doing a full OS reinstall and sync/powerdown/powerup when you update your phone. So you probably do feel that things are faster, but they would probably feel that way if you restarted your phone's OS every day or so. All of these Apps doing weird things to our phones that can cause sluggishness. A reboot fixes a lot of that.

Hopefully they'll fix the annoying issue with the camera taking 6 seconds to turn on after you open the camera app.

I had this problem also, starting with the 2.0 firmware. The problem is related to having tons of pictures on your phone. I had 1,500 photos, and it would take seemingly forever to open the Camera app as well as to take pictures. It was so bad as to be pretty much unusable. I finally removed all the pictures on my phone and that "solved" the problem. This is certainly something Apple needs to address, but at least you can work around it by dumping the photos off your phone now and again.

I'm (and every one I know with an iPhone) am part of the 2% who's iPhone fumbles the 3g to edge (or edge to 3g) hand off EVERY time.

I used to get 1 bar of 3G or 1 bar of EDGE at home. The mis-handoff that was constantly happening render the phone useless unless I turned of 3G... then it would happily stay at 1 bar EDGE all the time.

I now get 0 bars of edge (though I can still make a call and connect to data very slowly- apparently 0 bars =/= no signal) However, when I go to 3G I get "No Service" and the phone won't even try to swap to the 0 bar EDGE.

Contacts is snappy. No SMS lag. However, that's been my experience after any back-up and restore for a while until the bit-rot starts up again.

Seems like nothing new: move along. I'd skip it (since I had better reception with 2.0.1- I'll be going back to that... right now)

I'm using a non-3G 8GB iPhone and the update went fine for me. All applications and media is present and accounted for and working normally. AT&T / EDGE shows full bars and WiFi is connected to my network.

Does this firmware support new keyboards and languages?

still a lag in contacts

I had horrendous lag before 2.0.1

Apparently, the lag is due to the iPhone looking for and accepting changes to Address Book and iCal on "the cloud"

I do in fact notice the lag if I have been making changes on my desktop. I don't expect that lag to decrease unless I turn 3G on.

I am getting the same thing.

Rebooted, reinstalled iTunes, reset iPhone. No love. Same error. Cannot find any reliable or useful data online about it.

Anyone have any ideas/solutions?

I guess it depends, but I dont consider it good. If I am just turning in circles, I dont think my coverage should change.

So with a 1st and 2ng generation in the house, iTunes requires one to download TWICE. Comcast is definitely gonna throttle this one. Anyone with a full family of phones should prepare for a long night.

Weird, I've upgraded and I'm not seeing "Databases" just a "Developer" pane. I that just for the iPhone, not the IPT?

After reading about all these problems with the 3G I decided to wait for the gen 2b or even 3 as my 1st gen "original" iPhone works like a charm. E-mail push works, no lag in contacts, stable connections, no cracked case.

My backup takes about 5 to 10 minutes, why is it so much longer with others? I have no movies on my 8GB iPhone?

Copy and paste works great, tip twice on to the start, than stroke for the text to be copied and tip once.

I get this type of error when I am using media that it is trying to sync with iPhone. Make sure you are not playing any music or media either through iTunes or another app. Try reboot to make sure. I cannot remember my error number but I think it was the same.

That's only because the iPhone and iPhone 3G use different firmware files. If you were to try another iPhone or iPhone 3G, iTunes would not download the firmware again.

I'm in downtown Toronto, ON with Rogers and at home, since I got my iPhone I was only getting 3 bars. This is downtown Toronto in a highrise. I knew something wasn't right.

In addition, I occasionally got some dropped calls which also doesn't seem right considering my central location.

After installing 2.0.2, I'm getting full power, 5 bars :)

Some of you people must have a lot of stuff on your phone for a 3 hour long backup.

Mine took about 5 minutes to back up. I don't have much on mine though, only about 120 MB worth of songs and about 6 apps.

- Unplug your phone from iTunes
- Re-plug your phone into iTunes
- Click 'Update'
- All is well

I got this four times. You just need to re-plug in your phone.

This is confirmed. Backing up last night took me a good 45-60 minutes. This backup took a little under 2 minutes.

I'm going with the theory that the update was not released to even fix reception problems but was indeed software bug fixes. The reception update is coming at a later time.

I did a backup before upgrading to 2.0.2. The backup took less than a few minutes. So far so good, no dropped calls even though I have one bar. For those of you getting Error 19, try hooking up to the internet using a hardwired cable. That seemed to fix my issues.

My 2.02 update on my 3G (16GB) took about 10-12 minutes total, including time to download.

Updated and seems to work just fine. Don't notice anything significant yet. Can't check 3G service strength since I don't live in a 3G area (right outside the fringe according to AT&T's maps) - I'll have to check at work tomorrow.

Ok, running 2.0.2 (iPhone 3G White)

- An extremely long update process (your in for a 1hr+ backup process)
- Everything seems faster and more tuned
- Updated with applications installed using 2.0.1, all are still working/launching (70+)
- No noticeable change(s) to 3G connectivity
- No noticeable change(s) to iPhone OS’ settings panel
- No, Copy & Paste does not exist in 2.0.2, no matter how good the PS skills
- No push

Most awesome comment EVER.

Updated, everything seems fine, phone is fast & responsive. I have 5 bars where typically i have 3-4. chance or not, i cant say.

I wonder if i can look forward to sluggishness & frequent reboots? Or maybe a semi-solid platform.

It's taking so long to backup : ( and people keep calling. Going a little crazy, about an hour since i started updating

Are you using a USB 1.0 port? Such as the USB port on the back of mac keyboards? There's no way it could take that long. My backup took a few seconds.

thank god i dont have an iphone 3G. i mean yeah i dont have fast cellular service but from what ive been hearing sounds like they dont even have service neway and they have to revert back to edge so i dont see much of a loss with the first gen (other than gps which i dont really need). even with gps missing i think the iphone 2G is way better.

This update DRASTICALLY improved the Google Maps application (more specifically, the ability to lock on to your posistion with a real GPS signal, as apposed to the "General Area Blue Circle" that would appear most of the time.)

I'm assuming this is all behind the scenes bug fixes for true turn-by-turn voice GPS applications, such as the one coming from TomTom.

Also, didn't Apple release a new CoreLocation API recently allowing better usage of the GPS such as direction, speed, etc?

Everything seems to be falling into place; I don't know about anyone else but I really believe a TomTom GPS-app will make this phone unbeatable.

Been running 2.0.2 for a few hours on my iPhone 3G. Overall it seems snappier. Have not had a crash yet using Safari or any of the applications. Everything seems to be working properly.

No 3G in this area (NH is supposed to get it in Oct/Nov), but EDGE reception appears to be the same (3-5 bars in my condo). The big test reception wise will be tomorrow at work, where I typically get 1 or maybe 2 bars depending on how many inches away from the window I am and whether I am breathing at the moment.

Wooo....Another update. After installing and checking everything, no difference, again, in the suckiness of my 3G reception. I'm in a 3G area and used to get great 3G coverage with my RAZR v3xx, but now, still nothing. I don't see any improvements in anything else either.

I'm ready for 2.1 now please! Granted, I need to return my iPhone and exchange it for the fifth time. This one does nothing when I try to connect to WiFi, no matter how many troubleshooting and reseting and restoring techniques I try, it doesn't work. I'm guessing a faulty chip. Honestly.......

I notice significantly faster EDGE data speeds

nationalgeographic.com loaded in 35 seconds for me over EDGE (using iphone 3g)

as opposed to the 59 seconds Apple stated at WWDC

that's a massive improvement.

I have a 1st gen iphone. Still on v2.0.1 and tested it over EDGE. I got 38 seconds. First time I've tested it so can't compare to any other revisions.

3G signal is still crap, but mine now switches very quickly to Edge. If I only have one bar of 3G, it switches, within seconds, to Edge. This didn't happen before the update. Maps does seem faster. The lag is back in contacts!
