AppleInsider claims (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/20/retail_sources_say_its_closing_time_for_current_ipod_line.html) that iPod retailers are starting to get signals of an impending iPod refresh.
Target's iPod inventory has reportedly had a change in status from "Active" to "Discontinued" while UK retailer Argos is prepping to clear out their current iPod inventory in anticipation of the updates:. A person familiar with the plans says the company recently took receipt of new point-of-sale displays promoting "price cuts" that should hit the retail floor during the last week of August or first week of September.Apple is widely expected to release new iPods in September. Rumors have pointed to a new iPod Touch and iPod nano redesign.

Maybe i should return my ipod touch :D
Why? The one you have now will still be a good Touch. Besides, the new Touch will probably just have a redesign change—nothing new that will be noteworthy.

Good, about D&£$!£$! Time too!
I've been drooling for a Nano for ages.... but if they change the design I'm jumping to go for a current model I think it's perfect in size.
Though I've heard that the Touch will not be different in design, only some moderate upgrades will take place. However the only note worthy thing to mention I think is the fact that NIKE will play a big part in this new update. I know a guy at Nike who says they've been told that the new iPods will be a major hit with runners. So I assume the Nike software will be a little more than just a plug and play thing. It seems that for once we might not need those things in our shoes! The Touch might be able to handle the steps on it's own if worn on your hips, and if this is any indication of any updated for the nano, I'm guessing it's going to be the same for them. Motion sensor in the nano to be more compatible with the Nike merger of the new software.
I can't confirm this, so take it as it is... Though I don't have a reason NOT to believe him cause he didn't seem that hyped about new iPods, but he did mention that the software written for the new Nike app, suggests some minor new modifications to the iPods.
Time will tell and I hope I'll like the new design. I love the current fatty iPods. :)

I think that a 64gb touch is a feasible option for the redesign. even if it isn't a redesign and just a capacity bump.
i also agree with the worth. i mean as a wifi-enabled internet tablet, the ipod touch is unmatched in its class (hear me, DIFFERENT class than the iphone!). but on the media player front, as many have previously mentioned, it is lacking. added capacity should keep it current.
that and volume control if steve jobs blesses our inferior selves ;)

So i work at an un named stapes location and we received a letter from apple telling us that we have received our last iPod supplies for this generation. our store got one of each of the iPods and our store is medium volume.
So listen up folks I would start using the word IMMANENT and IPOD INTRO.

by "stapes" do you mean staples? or some other store i am not familiar with. if it is staples, i checked online and apparently the only ipod you sell is the ipod nano, so how could you receive one ipod of each model? btw the ONLY source i have is the internet so i might be completely wrong.

I ordered the iPt on sept 5 2007(the beat goes on keynote day) and now have had both iPhones. I think the will make the wifi areial nicer and drop the 8gb. 64gb unlikely this year. I think volume buttons would be nice. No camera/gps/3G/speakers.

New MacBook Pro (or maybe MBP refurbished, depending on added value of redesign) and a nice touchy touchy given that higher capacities will sell at lower prices.
Current iPod Touch Promotion = savings in product refresh advances. :p
I'm hoping for a GPS equipped Touch.
OH GREAT! That'll be really useful when you leave your Wi-Fi equipped house. GPS requires extensive mapping software that'd take up some considerable room on the Touch. Not happening.

Costco also has extremely low quantities. I've been advising members to wait until late September to purchase an iPod. The last time our quantities were this low was right before the last refresh...

Um, I don't think so - the GPS on the iPhone is heavily dependent on there being intertubes where you are (aka, 3g/EDGE). Wifi is prevalent, but not the point that I think the GPS on the iPt would be so valuable...
Unless, they are going to put a radio in the iPt to use it for streaming music only. Maybe something with AT&T for like $10-15 a month and you can get some internets. Would go well with the patent from a few weeks ago about streaming media to mobile devices. Could be a cool idea for those that don't want/can't get an iPhone but want a little more out of their iPt.

Staples business depot. Your back to school location.
Yah our online store sucks but we carry all the iPod models.
My personal bet for the next gen is that apple will introduce larger cap touch models and replace the Nano with a smaller screened touch. Most likely the same capacity as the touches we have out now. Then as for the classics future im not sure:(
What you are going to want to look for in the new touches is one major new future at minimum. I would most likely bet side controls like the silver ones on iPhone 3gs. Or maybe GPS if we are lucky. Or how about bluetooth for Skype or other chat services. OH where apple could go with this

Well I was at target last night, they had one 8GB touch on hand, along with 3 black, , 1 green 3 sliver nanos and 0 ipod classics...
They then had 3 "superpacks" for target stores only. It included a 4GB nano, a case and a $15 i tunes gift card for $149.
I personaly would never buy electronics like an ipod from target. Costco is the best place. They ALWAYS have the ipods 10 bucks cheeper then the other places plus great return policy. some complain because you cant see the actual product or take the actual box up to the regester. who cares. same goes for computers and TVs you idiots

We have OK inventory of Classics and 4GB Nanos but the 8GB Nanos (in any colour) have been really hard to come by over the past 1 or 2 months...
Before the last refresh we were COMPLETELY out of any iPods of any kind for about 2 months before the event. With a bit of luck supply would get that bad this time!

I can't wait for the new iPods.
And since an earlier poster said that there were no Classics, does this mean we might also see an iPod Classic refresh?
If everything turns out as I think it will, I am really looking forward to getting an iPod Touch 16GB for $300 and an iPod Classic 240GB $350.

Speaking from experience, the Bluetooth 2.1 Stereo Headphones don't work that great. Then again I have only tried a few brands and disliked the output experience.
Wireless sinking even with Bluetooth 2.1 is slow, a USB 2.0 plus is still way better.

Everybody wants a camera, especially me since I thik that the camera on the iPhone is effing amazing for a phone.
Although I don't think we will see wireless headphones and wireless syncing until the refreshment in for fall '09.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Classic replaced by an iPod Touch with an HDD.
The iPod Touch's screen is perfect for video and photos but the memory format prevents the Touch from reaching its full potential with its very limiting 32GB ceiling.
On the other hand, the iPod Classic's huge drive is overkill for most music owners. Using the Classic for video is not ideal due to it's small screen's dimensions.
The Classic's HDD is a perfect match for the Touch's screen. Such a combination makes the Classic irrelevant. A 160GB or even 200GB would be just slightly thicker than the current iPod touch, perhaps the same width as the iPhone.
As for the Nano, I don't think that the it'll go touch. The Nano will probably maintain the click wheel as it's great for running and other sports. Furthermore, adding a new touch screen size would complicate the development of apps.
I'm predicting a simplification of the iPod line to a choice between an iPod Nano and a Touch:
iPod Nano 16GB
iPod Nano 32GB
iPod Touch 32GB (flash)
iPod Touch 100GB (HDD)
iPod Touch 200GB (HDD)

[/B]
Mate I've taken apart Old 20GB's, new Classics and Touches... I reckon if they put a 1.8" HDD in the touch it would be a hell of a lot thicker, quite a bit more than the iPhone. The touch is increadibly compact, throwing in a HDD would add a tremendous amount of width not only cos of the HDD but the SATA connector, surrounding padding, etc.
We can always pray tho!

If anything, the iPod touch will have a price drop (8 GB $249) or there will be a 2.8"~3.2" "iPod touch nano."

That would be cool--a cross between an iPod and a Garmin GPS watch!!!
Well at this point I think reading through all these comments, that if there WERE a GPS included in the new iPod Touch it would make the Nike App work a heck of a lot better! Then we'd get the same feature that the iPhone would have!!!
But then all of this is very limited to what he knows as a software developer. He's only going on numbers and release notes on what those minor changes are.
I personally have a bit of a hard time seeing how it would change in size, or form based only on numbers and release notes from Apple, but then I don't write Nike Application software. ;)
He does say that it's going to be different on some important notes which can only be done if the hardware is updated to match the functions they are introducing or want to introduce.
They will launch the Nike app as apart of the new campaign to the updated iPods. He says it's going to be a free download or a purchase via the App store... Free with a voucher I assume. Again, marketing department, software department etc. they don't talk to each other so what he hears is basically only rumors at this point. But his rumors from Nike camp must be closer to the truth than most others out there... we hope.. :/
So yeah, Nike + iPods are not going to be a more wider market. Nano was great, but the iPod Touch will be for the hardcore runners with instant gratification. (Hence if you run far enough and get lost you'll always know where you'll end up...:p )

From what I understand that's not going to change either, but you'll have an additional option.
Though come to think of it, it's NIKE and much like APPLE, it's not going to say no to a product that has a certain life expectancy and we're forced to go out and spend more money to buy a new one. :'
So I'm thinking the shoe chip is also here to stay. Maybe it's just apart of a new update too.
I see your point though if it's GPS alone it's not going to help those who jog indoors. But I don't think it's going to be a problem.
I wish I could get a free working version of that Nike app now... I saw it on his iPod Touch and got pretty envious. But then it was a beta so I don't dare to put that on my iPod... I'm too chicken to do that. I've got a neatly organized iPod, loosing the data would be a very tedious backup process I don't feel like going through.

I noticed BestBuy, WalMart, RadioShack, and both San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley had limited supplies of iPods and iPod Touch. Most noticeable was the waiting period of 1-2 weeks for the iPod Touch Back-To-School Rebate customers who bought MB, MBA, MBP at the campus stores. The "greater masses" generally don't know what they need or want and are fixated that bigger and newer is always better.
So what if their iPod still has 4GB free, This one is BIGGER!..
Plus, at least in my own experience, my little sister-in-law jams hers full of useless videos, so the extra space could actually go to music, go figure.

I doubt there is any way to make a nano with over 16 bg at this time and keep it in the cost range of the nano.
Hopefully they boost up the iPod touch substantially. It's an awesome little device if you can't use an iPhone but want the handheld wifi/apps. I just don't find 8B worth $300. 16GB, yes. I'm just filling my 4GB nano after 2 years, but could drop tons of video into a device.

160 GB double-platter. I'm talking about 120 GB single-platter and 240 GB double-platter.
Isn't that like what people said about the "fat" iPod nano leaks last year?

In the Sunday paper I got for Target, here's what I found with this ad about the iPod Nano... (this is the ad for the area of NH). I found the online ad version since I threw my Target flyer away.
The little text is hard to see- so this is what it says:
Apple 4GB iPod nano bundle includes free $15 iTunes gift card. Nano plays video and holds up to 1,000 songs. Actual capacity may vary. Items packaged together. Available in Back-To-School Dept. Quantity limited. No rain checks.
Doesn't mean much, but I thought I'd share. :)

I'm almost certain that there will be new iPod Nanos. My father works at Micron Technology in Boise (they supply plenty of goodies to Apple) and he told me several months ago that they were finishing up memory that met lower power draw specifications (for longer battery life). So I'm pretty certain to see at least new Nanos.

What is the possibility that apple's new "nano" will be a nano touch?
This would explain the rumor of the larger, and wider screen (especially since I don't think Apple would release a larger nano than their previous version).
Seems like the next logical step to me, since the nano in it's current physical incarnation is pretty solid. So instead of replacing the old, just add a new one to the line.
What do you all think?

I am all for a 240GB Classic. On another apple fan site many were all over those of us wanting a high capacity HD iPod-asking who really needs or has that much music. Obviously they would never sell as many classics as nanos or touches but there are many who don't use for video but have very large music collections. I mean we have thousands of CDs and so on and want to have a good part of our collection lossless to have with us at studios, offices, vacation houses and who play our pods through really great stereos and speakers. Many of us are not on the go headphone listeners.
My 160 Classic is full and I could easily have one double capacity. I also know DJs and so on who want these too. On the other site a few were trying to figure how many iTunes downloads or CDs we've purchased to have a classic so full, but again many older collectors have thousands of CDs and want the option to have them in hand.
I really hope Apple continues the classic. We don't need a touch that big but we love all of our music to go.
Oh and some brought up streaming which I sometimes do with my iPhone from my HD at home but it is not as reliable or quality great and buffering sometimes craps out. Only great of you are WI FI ... and then there are battery and time issues...

Why? The one you have now will still be a good Touch. Besides, the new Touch will probably just have a redesign change—nothing new that will be noteworthy.
That is what you think but there are hints that the refresh might be more interesting than you suspect. That based on noise coming from Apple that PA Semi was purchased to make chips for the iPods. That and the rumors that they where almost finished, with thee chips, at the time of Apples purchase.
Now of course that could simply mean that the PA hardware is a simple integration project to lower cost. I don't think Apple will do simple in this case though. They could easily add many features that have been asked for in respect to these devices. The such as being BluTooth, USB Master or On The Go support, better battery life, GPS and whatever else the wild masses want.
It is all depedant on what is ready hardware wise for this round of updates. It also depends somewhat on how many chips are ready. I can see them easily reaching an integration level where everything possible today on touch can be squeezed into a Nano sized device and have better battery performance. For a Touch/iPhone sized device I can see significant improvements in features and performance.
In fact if Apple has the balls to do so the next Touch could be a huge jump in performance. I could see PA doubling performance at the same power levels. This through a new ARM architecture, faster clocks and PA based power saving techniques. Imagine todays Touch running at some placed equivalent to 700 MHz, hopefully with twice the RAM.
However all this being said there is no sense in returning a Touch. First this is speculation! Second it must have been good enough for you at the time of purchase.

Um, I don't think so - the GPS on the iPhone is heavily dependent on there being intertubes where you are (aka, 3g/EDGE). Wifi is prevalent, but not the point that I think the GPS on the iPt would be so valuable...
[\quote]
I'm not sure were your misunderstanding comes from but the GPS hardware on the IPhone is not dependant on any sort of cell connection. The maps app corrently shipping with IPhone IS but that is one software package.
[quote]
Unless, they are going to put a radio in the iPt to use it for streaming music only. Maybe something with AT&T for like $10-15 a month and you can get some internets. Would go well with the patent from a few weeks ago about streaming media to mobile devices. Could be a cool idea for those that don't want/can't get an iPhone but want a little more out of their iPt.
There are all lsorts of approaches to GPS data storage but on of the most useful concepts for a GPS enabled Touch based device is that of downloadable maps already used in the industry. Given that an extremely large area can be compressed into less than a gigabyte of memory this is not a problem. Especially if the new iPod come with 64 & 128 GB of flash.
As to GPS I can understand not everyone needing it or wanting to pay for it. I would not be surprised to see Apple offer stripped down models without this feature. More expensive Touches could offer up GPS, audio in any a host of other luster after features. This allows Apple to drive down the price on basic functionality while protecting it's flank with more advanced models.
Hey can't be more than a couple of weeks now.

I believe that Samsung, Toshiba and possibly Micron have their 32GB flash chips for sale right now. Other suppliers have such on the market for the SD flash segment. These are not extremely cheap of course on the street but remember Apple doesn't pay street prices for the high volumes it uses.
What this all means is that I can see a 64 GB touch as an easy expectation an a 32GB nano as a some what weaker possibility. More importantly to many is that an iPhone upgrade can't be to far away either.
Apple could hit 128 GB in a Touch sized device given the right integration. It is a matter of board space or a willingness to use double stacked chip modules.

The 5th generation hdd based iPods used a high quality Wolfson DAC. This was replaced in the 6th generation classics with an inferior (but still probably fine for most) Cirrus Logic DAC. The Wolfson DAC is still used in the iPhone and iPod touch.
I was thinking it likely that the Wolfson DAC might be discontinued in the iPod touch lineup. The fact no one has mentioned sound quality in the previous posts suggests it wouldn't be missed. Personally, I'd like to see a high quality DAC and also a digital output. But I think Hell will freeze first.

I had read about these various DAC's too. Subjectively, I actually prefer the iPod Classic to the 5G. I like the iPod Touch a lot as well.
I'm not using uncompressed music or anything like that (nor am I using audiophile headphones), so my preference is in all likelihood due to simply different sound signatures of the different models, rather than quality of the DAC.
I think the iPods overall have improved tremendously in sound quality, so at this point I don't worry too much about new models, besides perhaps trying to listen to them first before buying.

yep...lawnmower won *LOL*
I do have a spare MP3 player (little 2 gig POS that I had lying around), so I can at least listen to music
but I want a new Classic...I hope they lower prices...and increase capacity...I'll get the 160
Chances are they will have the 160GB for $250 and something like a 240GB for $350.
I'm probably going to get a new Classic at the update also.
I will most likely get a 240GB Classic and a 16GB Touch.
If you ask me how I plan on getting all of this, the total would be like almost $700, my birthday is at the end of September.
That has to be the best timing.
I'll probably get my Grandma to buy me the 16GB Touch and then I'll sell my 80GB.
I will use the money from selling my 80GB and from my birthday to get the 250GB Classic.

I wish they'd make the official annoucement already...I need a new iPod...
I agree and it's killing me to not go buy a Touch. I did a little research and last year they sent out announcements on August 28 for an event held on September 5 so there's a good possibility that we'll see an event announcement next week.
Also, I can't seem to find when the Touch was released to retail to see the time between announcement and release (would love to see it released soon after the announcement).

I don't remember for sure, but it might have been 2-3 weeks.
IIRC, there was some hubbub here about early Apple.com online orders being filled after the Touch started showing up at some retailers like Best Buy.
It may not be instantly available, but it won't be 2 months either. The wait right now is worse than the wait after the intro will be, because right now we have no idea what's coming across the entire product line.
I think Apple is going to really go for it this time. iPods and music players are no longer a big growth market, so I think Apple will try hard to try to drive sales forward. The iPhone has made a huge splash and deservedly so, but the iPod still generates a huge amount of revenue for Apple.

The only thing I can think of is a 4GB version.
But that would be very hard to have 4GB's and not be able to choose or see what you're listening too.
BTW, shuffles suck.
You kidding me? Shuffles are the greatest thing. There are times that's all I want - something with a big play and next button that I don't have to constantly look at. just clip it and go. And when I arrive, just roll up the headphones and stuff everything in my jeans pocket. It's a wonderful addition to my ipod family.
It's so simple it's the only ipod I could get for my mom. She couldn't read the screens of a nano and the interface is jsut confusing to non-geeks.

Well I also have a 20GB 4G Monochrome but I didn't bother using that because the battery last like 4 hours max.

You have a nice Grandma.
Well she bought me my first iPod, 30GB Video and I believe it was $300.
That's probably going to be the price of the 16GB Touch.
And if she does get it for me, it will be my birthday present.

At my local Walmart (only store locally to sell any good electronics), toward the beginning of the month, they had to 8gb iPod touches in stock. They didn't have the old software 8gb, either 16gb and they have never had the 32gb. Also, the iPod touch that goes in the display, they have at least one actual iPod for each model, was not in its place anymore... But, if I recall, that has been gone for a little while now, probably 2 months.
When I went back a couple of days ago they have 8 8gb in stock now, but still nothing on the others.
So, at first I was thinking my local store was following the trends of everyone else, but now they seem to have changed paths a little.

Well I sorta noticed the same same thing at my local walmart.
They had all of the iPods on display.
And I had no way of telling which Touch model was on display.
But they did have a plentiful amount of Nanos; I'd say around 5 or 6.
There was one 8GB Touch and two of the 32GB Touch.
I think there was maybe two or three Classics.
They also offered a $30 iTunes gift card with the purchase of any iPod Touch.

I work at target and will check tomorrow to see if that is true. If it is then my iPod touch will be going up for sale!lol, I finally remembered to check.
Only the iPod Nanos and iPod Classics are marked as discontinued. The touch and shuffle say "active" on our store's PDA's.

Figures.
No store is ever going to run out of Shuffles.
And can you check the capacity on the remaining Touches?
I bet there's only like 32GB versions left, considering I don't think there are that many people that would pay $500 for a 32GB mp3 player, weather it has internet or not.
