Dual Displays

I've been toying around for quite a bit with this and still haven't figured it out so I'm posting my question here.

I just hooked up my 47" 1080P Westinghouse TV to my iMac through the external DVI, then a DVI to HDMI cable, and I would like to mirror my displays

However when I enable this option, I can not independently change the resolutions of each monitor and am locked to the lowest (this being the 1080 LCD TV resolution) out of the two, so I'm left with a widescreen version on my 24" iMac screen

Anybody have any suggestions? I want to be able to independently control the resolutions of each monitor...

If you are mirroring the displays the two displays have to be at the same resolution. How else would it be a mirror?
