I don't have anything to trade. But I love seeing a 400mhz machine being traded for a 1.1-1.4. As a Mac person for 10 years, I think this is great and is a very good example of the value associated with owning Mac.
Happy Trading!

I'd be all over that 1.4 GHz PIII, those were really nice processors and I bet that could be upgraded into a pretty nice machine with the right video card and some extra RAM.

I might be willing to do that, but I'm worried about shipping costs for shipping my machine over to Minnesota.
I have:
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (1.46GHz)
256MB RAM
60GB HD
32X CD-RW
32MB Savage4 video card plus a Voodoo 3 3500TV (doesn't work so well, you have to underclock it to make it stable)
10/100 LAN
56K Modem
3 FireWire 400 Ports

There is no 800 MHz upgrade for the Powermac G4 Yikes, I believe.

It was the developer name for this particular G4. (the second generation, I think.....check www.apple-history.com for more info)
Kinda like the "Quicksilver" G4, or Mirror-Door G4, etc.

Yikes is the particulary name for the model which stuck on this model because it was the first PowerMac G4 and came with PCI graphics. Also it is a model that was somewhat left behind in terms of processor upgrades. There used to be an 800 Mhz G3 upgrade but now the top is 500 mhz G4 upgrade. Here (http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=167&type=Processor&TI=%23TimeFormat%28Now%28%29%2C+&shoupgrds=Show+Upgrades) is a list of processor upgrades.

Actually the machine is not as slow as you describe it and I have others who can attest to that. It runs 10.3.2 suprisingly well. However, if you are looking for a power desktop this is not it.

Sorry, but that's just ridiculous. Athlon XP 2600? 1700?
I have a nice Umax Pulsar @G4 400 Mhz 80 Gig HD (ATA 100 via PCI upgrade card), Ethernet, USB (card), Matrox Millenium 8MBs and Voodoo 3 16 Mbs, 2 CD Roms, Floppy.
Just interesting, what's it worth? What d' you think?

Maybe not a 2600... but a 1700 may be worth it. All of the other offers are definitely worth it.

Dude. Dont tell me how fast my computer is. I use the exact same one everyday. Maxed out on ram, 10.2.8, defragged HD.
Sure, iTunes runs fine, and iPhoto keeps up some of the time (1000+ photos), but when it comes to serious Photoshop work or (gasp) 3D work, it doesnt even come CLOSE to any Althlon. Thats all Im saying.

see this is nuts. i offer my 2600 for the 400 (plus cash) and everyone flips out. but then wen i try and trade it for a 533, 700, 800, everyone tells me my pc is crap and its not worth anywhere near the powermac. mixed responses?

Anyone who says your AMD system is crap is ignorant. Some people who see anything besides Mac will immediately jump to those conclusions, but in reality, that system is pretty high end compared to mainstream PC configs.

Your 2600 system is definitely worth maybe a 667-933 MHz G4, I'd say. Anyway that's what you'd want to run Garageband ideally.

its nice to hear the approval, but i doubt anyone would want to trade a 667-900 mhz mac

Yeah- the Athlon kicks the crap out of my 533 G4- but its a mac, and people are willing to pay much more for much less because of the quality, OS, and brand loyalty... Hell- Icould get a damn fast PC- but Id rather get a slow old i/powerbook

Weird.
I have both. Dual Xeon for rendering and Powerbook for editing. (and the 400mhz G4 to collect dust) Err, I mean, for my wife.

The speed of a machine like the B&W is DIRECTLY proportionate to the versions of programs you have on it. I think it really depends on what you’re going to use the machine for.
I work at a newspaper using Photoshop 5, Quark 4 and many other program on a Beige G3 266 w/2G, 512mb with OS 8.1. And for the most part it is just fine. It has no problem working with 100mb files. Granted it not a speed demon.
Also, I used my B&W w/OS 9 and PS5.5, Quark 4, Illustrator 8 etc. to create many projects including a 250 page magazine w/files at 300dpi. Before that I was using a iMac 400. Now I have 12” Powerbook which I’ve still have had to use some OS9 versions of my programs (haven’t had the money upgrade yet).
All I’m saying is that if you have older programs with an older machine it works great. I did use Photoshop OSX version with my B&W and it ran just fine, too. My B&W 400 runs OS X pretty well.
I really think folks get spoiled, and just have to have the latest and greatest.

My 400 MHz PowerBook G3 is really nice under OS 9, I can surf the web, write papers, do Powerpoint and random projects on it, and do Seti work pretty well even though it is older and slower, but under OS X, it definitely isn't too productive. It's probably more due to the low RAM (192) than anything else, but whenever I have money, I rather spend it on my new PowerBook. I have had thoughts of putting some more RAM in and maybe getting a new battery and giving it to my dad for his office computer since he is stuck with a really bad eMachines 133 MHz with 16 megs RAM running Win 95 because his secretary switched computers before my dad took his new job there.

I'd trade you my 1700 if he goes for the 2600.
For either of you:
The machine is in a full tower case, which is not ideal for LAN parties since it is very large and heavy. I will see if I can get a Lian-Li Aluminum case cheap (I know someone who has one, might be willing to sell it to me) and if not I'll include a smaller, but less rigid case (the full tower is built like a tank).

I don't know. It would depend on how much I could get it for (I don't actually own it).

If it's a decent price and a good model of the lian-li case I will be highly interested.
