so my mac runs on os x with a 2.16ghz intel core 2 due processor

Sorry, but it appears that your computer can "only" handle a total of 2 GB of RAM.

You have a Calistoga-based Core 2 Duo MacBook. That means you can put two 2 gig sticks in it for about 3.1 gb of available memory, or a 2 gig and a 1 gig stick for 3 gb of memory. The advantage of 2x2 is that you get dual channel performance, but OWC's testing indicates it's not really worth it.
