View Full Version : Adding memory to a MacBook

We all know Apple charges stupid amounts to upgrade from 2GB to 4GB. Because of such the consensus usually is to buy the memory elsewhere and install it yourself or have someone certified by Apple to install it. That's where my question lies.
Is Apple's warranty null and void if a user replaces memory in his/her MacBook? Also, how much would Apple charge, if anything, if I took it in to ask them to replace the memory?
Thanks for any information.

No, the warranty is not null and void, but if you break anything that damage is not covered as Apple only cover manufacturing defects, not accidental damage.

Is Apple's warranty null and void if a user replaces memory in his/her MacBook? No, the RAM is considered to be a user-replaceable part. However, if you break anything else while you're in there then that may not be covered.

Changing MB memory takes all of 5 minutes. Remove 2 screws, remove ram, replace ram, put 2 screws back.

Just make sure you get the right size screwdriver, it's really tiny!

Also, remember that MB's only go up to 3GB. MBP's go up to at least 4GB.

It took longer for me to get the RAM sticks out of the blister pack Crucial sent them in than it took for me to install them.
God I hate that stuff.
