I know this is the console forum but I decided to include PC games so owners of all 3 platforms can decide which version of the game to get.

This is really just to remind everyone of the great releases coming out this year, feel free to suggest any other hot game for 2008 I might have missed.

If a column says 360 or PC or PS3 it means that game is available ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY for that/those platform/s. If the name of a game is bolded it means it's already out, the colored number at the end of the line is the metacritic score for that game, clicking on it will take you to the game's metacritic entry. Green means it's a good game (75-89), orange is average or mixed (60-74), red is just plain bad (59 and below) and blue (90 or higher) means it's an outstanding game.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

You missed SOCOM Confrontation :p

But hey, nice list.
Here's a few more that you could add.
-Sonic Unleashed
-Quantum of Solace

But I'm unsure about both of those two titles.

Good list. Really looking forward to CoD 5. I've bought every game in the series and it has never let down, lets hope I get as many hours out of it online as I did with CoD 3 and CoD 4.

I know!!! This needs to be added now. We need an admin to edit the post  (jk :D).

Actually adding PSN/XBL games is a good idea. There are some great PSN games coming. The thing is, none of them have real release dates.

Well I added the Wii but I'm sure I missed some games (I also put some that might not end up that great like Gravity, Line Rider 2, Mushroom Men and Lightsaber Duels) , I haven't been following the Wii too closely. I might remove some games because I truly only want to include games of general interest (this is why I didn't include PES 2009 or Madden or anything like that, some people don't like those sports and hence the games no matter how good they are) and games that are truly AAA titles.

I also added a few like Tales of Vesperia, SOCOM (;)), Sacred 2, LEGO Batman and Spiderman Web of Shadows. I'm holding out on Sonic Unleashed because the last Sonic game sucked and Quantum of Solace is a movie game but it uses the CoD4 engine and is handled by decent developers so that might be a possibility. Also MRU, Project Origin has been delayed to Q1 2009, Alan Wake is vaporware and Pure, MK vs DC, Destroy All Humans were already on the list :p I'll check out those other games you suggested.

BTW, Lego Batman and Spidrman are also coming for PC but I didn't think those two games warranted me creating a whole other column so I just put a clarification at the bottom. (one for games coming out on PC, 360, PS3, Wii)

Feel free to correct anything.

Also, I'll be adding Metacritic scores and bolding games as they are released, I added Tales of Vesperia's score but it's not coming out until tomorrow so I'll be bolding it then.

P.D: I know the 360-PS3-PC column still says all platform but the Wii is really different and even if the same game is coming for it it'll be very different with the exception of maybe Lego Batman.

Exactly why I understood they weren't on the list at first. Thanks for adding SOCOM :).

Well no-one would argue with you about Sonic... err except Ed ;):D

and DOH! for not realising those were already on the list. :p:)

Well done for setting it up though, I know it takes a good bit of time so credit where it's due :)

small update: Silent Hill Homecoming is also coming to the PC through a steam-exclusive distribution, scheduled for September 20 for NA and a a little later for Europe.

Also added the scores for Disgaea and the IGN score for Infinite Undiscovery, the color code is the same as Metacritic's, green means favorable reviews, orange (yellow is too light for the forum) means mixed or average reviews. For games scoring 90 or higher, I'll use another color for truly outstanding. I doubt we'll get reds but if they do that means it's just a bad game.

Oh also, clicking on the score will take you to the game's metacritic entry.

Added scores for FaceBreaker and Mercenaries 2, both are disappointing (FaceBreaker especially but I also expected a slightly higher score for Mercs 2, it still looks good though).

Also, Spore is close to release (already out in Australia) and has already received a 9.2 from IGN AU so it doesn't look like it will dissapoint. Maybe this will be the first blue game in the list :)

Left 4 Dead is on my my top list!

But yes, this fall/winter will be a rush of good game, a large amount being PS3 only, which means I'll have to invest in not only the games, but a new console.

Oh, and no handheld love?
Also Viva Pinta got 85 on meta critic, so decent. Wasn't in love with the 1st, but it could see a pick up one day for me

You know to be honest, I'm not that psyched about Spore, it looks like the gameplay is mediocre (it's a mash-up of genres and not one looks developed enough) and the only fun part is the creative aspect of it all, it doesn't look nearly as ambitious or cool as it looked back in 2007. The art style is too "cute" and generic, all creatures end up having the same vibe, Maxis should have given us a little more artistic freedom, some users have managed to create Alien-like (from the movie "Alien") creatures that break the mold but it seems like you need to invest a lot of time to even come close to creating something unique.

Crysis Warhead ought to be awesome, have you tried some of the custom maps for Crysis? There's one called Physis III that's more like a little physics funbox than an actual level but it's really awesome.

Well Spore has been so well dished out that really, previews haven't said sweet FA about it. I saw some of it at PAX and it looked intriguing, and let's be honest, Wil Wright is fantastic. Say what you will be the man makes great games (that get exploited by EA :D). I'm not pumped for it but I wanna snag it, especially because PC games are $50 or less :D

I haven't try much custom on Crysis, just playing through the storyline. Warhead is supposed to be more action packed, hopefully with less damn aliens

I've changed my mind...after seeing the developer walkthrough I am now excited about the game(fallout 3). The graphics arent all that but the gameplay looks fun except the VATs crap but I can live with it.

Isn't spore getting some low scores....I think its eurogamer beefing with the game.

dude bite your tongue! the VAT system is the only reason I will play the game. They have already crushed the classic Fallout gameplay and a lot of the look, VAT is all we have left...................................

Well Spore has launched with disappointing reviews, the scores are fine (and may be a little too high for what the review actually says) but reviewers say it's not that great a game, the actual gameplay is poor, the graphics are dull, the artistic design is limited and the only saving grace is the creative part of the game, at least it does seem unique enough to give it a go still. Anyways, it has an 88 on Metacritic, the highest review is 100 and the lowest is 79 to give you an idea.

It sounds a little disappointing, Clear Sky as well, I couldn't get into the first STALKER so I was hoping Clear Sky would give me a chance to jump into the STALKER world but alas, it has gotten disappointing reviews as well (78 metacritic).

List updated with new scores, also, Facebreaker now has a 56 score, Metacritic says that's average or mixed but screw Metacritic, 56 is just abysmal so it gets the red treatment.

Added the Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise score, 85 is pretty great, hope this game comes out on PC sometime like the first game.

Got this this morning and I've been playing it all day on both 360 and DS :)

DS version is amazing! It's the full viva game and it's far better than dare I say Animal Crossing : Wild Wood.....

Trouble in Paradise on the 360 is equally as amazing, and easily the best looking game personally i have seen on the console. The new garden tools are great and the menu system is easier to navigate.

I really hope that RARE have a major hit on their hands as they both versions of the game scream great quality - unfortunately I suspect that despite critical acclaim - the game will fall on many a deaf ear and dismissed just as quickly as the first game was. (Though i do hope not).

Wow I totally forgot Pocket Paradise was coming out :D, I'm definitely checking it out someday.

You should correct this;
"***This game is already available on Xbox 360 but due to hardware differences it's substantially different from the 360 release, whether it's worth purchasing over the 360 version or re-purchasing it again for Wii is yet to be seen."

How about this;

***This game is already available on Xbox 36 360, but due to a limited budget, small development team, and Capcom's previous success on minimal effort Wii ports, this game is being made with as little effort as possible to get it onto the Wii for a quick chash-in.

The Wii's lesser hardware has nothing to do with the stark contrast between this game and its 360 version. Anyways, crap in crap out.

Sorry, I'm touchy on this, especially with Capcom's PR touting how the Wii version is "accessible"! :o

Finally we get a blue game :p:)

It's Rock Band 2 which I'm not too much of a fan of but hey, it has a 94 on Metacritic which is awesome.

Spore turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment (85 is not bad but not great though I didn't like it much personally) and Mercenaries 2 got downgraded to orange because it now has 74 on Metacritic, another big disappointment (though I haven't tried it personally yet). The Force Unleashed has a 72, disappointing as well, I added the 360 score and not the PS3 one (which is lower) because it has 18 reviews opposed to 8 so it seems fairer to include the 360 score, both versions are identical anyways so it makes no sense. The Wii version is still not rated.

We might get 2 more blue games tomorrow though, Crysis Warhead already has a 9.4 on IGN and Pure seems to be getting good reviews (I've seen two 9.0s already).

Scores updated as well, most games actually dropped a point or two, as always, corrections are encouraged,

An adder for some people: Locks Quest for the DS. It's a kind of RPG/tower defense game made by the dudes who did Drawn to Life. I played it at PAX and decided to pick it up since it's only $30 and so far I really like it. Uses the touch screen perfectly, lots of depth to the building of your defences, combat with Lock himself keeps you on your toes and while the character design isn;t outstanding, the graphics are VERY well done as is the music.

So far the metacritic is 82.7 although there are only 3 reviews. (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/locksquest?q=locks%20quest) Bozon from IGN said it's among the best DS games this year.

^ Whens the release date? Eurogamer doesn't have that info.

Also 8 tracks ? That's a bit tight isn't it ? However I will get it especially if they keep it under 15 Euro.

I'm wondering if they'll release a special edition version of it at some point with the extra downloable content (which is inevitable) and stick it on BR. I much prefer to own 'physical' copies of my games (hence importing SIREN) unless they are small or very cheap downloads.

Regarding hot games, I'm really liking Left For Dead.

Could I make a suggestion for the format of the list? I find all the categories a bother to sort through especially when 360 titles are found in multiple locations, like a title that is both 360/PS is there, but it's not in the 360 section.

My suggestion which would be very easy to navigate would be to use a single list with a platform ID in parenthesis following each title. My second section would be to list games in genre sections, FPS, RTS, RPG, etc.

IDs = PC, 360, PS3, Wii.

Example:
FPS
Left 4 Dead - Valve - 1st Person Survival Shooter (360, PC) - November 4.

Feel free to ignore suggestion if you don't like it! Thanks. :)

It's not a bad idea but I formatted it so that owners of more than one platform can know all their options, it's also for potential console buyers knowing which exclusives they'll get. If I listed in each column all the games for the console you'd see the same game 4 times in the list and you'd have a hard time comparing lists for games that are available on both so I find it better to list only put exclusives in the 360/PS3/whatever column and multiplatform games in a multiplatform column.

Also, I would add XBLA/PSN titles but there doesn't seem to be a reliable place where I can track all the games and their release dates. If someone would like to do that separately then I'll be glad to add it to the main post.

Added scores for Pure and Crysis Warhead, pretty good ones too, also, Warhammer is out today as is the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher, Liner Rider 2 Unbound and Starwars The Force Unleashed.

BTW, if anyone is wondering why I'm linking to the 360 metacritic page of multiplatform games I'm just doing that for games that really are identical on both platforms because the 360 page has more reviews counted, therefore, a more accurate score.

Yeah, you're remembering it wrong. Normal steering is accomplished using either the d-pad or the analogue stick. Side slipping (Wipeout is not an FPS, so we don't strafe) uses double-taps on the appropriate airbrake via the trigger buttons. If you actually play it with a little determination, it becomes second nature.

The game's out now and it's awesome. It brings a tear of nostalgia to my jaded eye.

I only bought Pure, Crysis Warhead and Spore though I've only beaten Spore out of those so far. Pure and Crysis Warhead did not disappoint me at all though (Spore did a little), Pure is pure fun (pun intended) and Crysis Warhead is a refined version of Crysis with new levels so it's awesome.

I played some of the other games like Mercenaries 2 but they either disappointed me or they are on a console I don't own :o

Also added Saints Row 2 (82) and bolded a few games which have been released but are not scored yet (like Golden Axe or SOCOM).

Rise of The Argonauts is a 2009 game so I struck it out the list.

Updated scores and corrected a few release dates (LittleBigPlanet, among others) but we have 2 new blue games, sure one is a port of a 2007 game (Bioshock) but a great game nevertheless and the other one is Fable II, so both systems (360 and PS3) get a universally praised exclusive on the month of October (I'm talking about LBP).

Far Cry 2 also comes out tomorrow and has a very positive 88, Golden Axe received a very poor 44 so that was one poor addition to the list after all :o

Also added Motorstorm: Pacific Rift score, 77, not too bad but I expected higher.

October has treated us better than September I think :) and we still have Fallout 3 and Red Alert 3 to go.

As always corrections are encouraged.

Update: Fable II got demoted to green status with the recent reviews.
Update2: Added SOCOM Confrontation score, a measly 57 which according to Metacritic is "average or mixed" but let's face it, below 60 is just plain bad so they all get the red treatment, it's disappointing to see the PS3 get two blue games only to ruin its streak with a red game.
Update3: Fable II is once again a blue game with a score of 90 points, SOCOM also got promoted to the less unflattering orange color (60 points) among other minor score shifts, also bolded some more games and added scores.

Saints Row 2 is a January 2009 game for the PC so I moved it up to the 360-PS3 column.

Also, Red Alert 3 is a 2009 game for the PS3 so I moved it to the 360-PC column, RA3 is not coming out until November 11 for the 360 so I'll only include the game in the PC statistics for October.

I've been playing a LOT of Order of Ecclesia, it's a great game, I also got Far Cry 2 for PC but I've hardly played it, it didn't absorb me, at least not yet.

Dead Space looks JUST like my kind of game though I haven't tried it yet. I also have my eye on Fallout 3 and Red Alert 3 but I just don't have the time right now.

Added stats for October, I chose LittleBigPlanet over Bioshock for best reviewed game because A) it has more reviews counted and B) it's a new game.

Technically the PC ended up being best reviewed again but I'd say the PS3 was the strongest platform with 3 blue games (one exclusive) and overall a strong selection of games.

spyker3292

SOCOM is getting such bad reviews. I don't really agree with them, it's a pretty nice game. And with the headset you can almost consider it a $10 game. With it's issues, it deserves a 7-8. I never would have guessed 58/100.

Chone
Nov 2, 2008, 10:08 PM
Updated stats for both months and scores for all games, just 'cause I felt like it :)

Anyways, the 360 doesn't have any exclusive blue games for October anymore because Fable II dropped down to 89, I counted Bully for PC so that brought PC average down to 81 but it's still best reviewed, there were some other minor shifts here and there too and LittleBigPlanet is now the definite best reviewed game because it went up to 96 while Bioshock went down to 94.

I feel it's a little unfair that the 360 and PS3 are so bad because of the inclusion of Golden Axe, it wasn't even a hot game, I just included it because it carries the name of what I consider to be a true classic but it turns out the game never even had any buzz or hype or anything.

Also, if any of you feel a game already released deserves to be added to the list then by all means speak, I'm going to add World of Goo later because it received raving reviews even though it's already released.

The corrupting hand of the console-centric money-coveting market sadly ruins a lot of games... they are still fun (I had a lot of fun with Bioshock) but you always have that bittersweet taste in your mouth that it could be SO much more had it not been made for the average semi-casual console gamer.

Dead Space is great though, the atmosphere is so well done that it more than makes up for the gameplay flaws.

I'm hoping that MS's payola on exclusives won't be as far reaching now, since the 360's hardware is clearly dated and their past actions inadvertently hurt Window's gaming sells.

The average semi-casual gamer that often refers to themselves as hardcore, so 90% of all console gamers. :o

Try playing BioShock after playing Dead Space and see if fun is still in the picture. :) Dead Space can be very consuming, where as BS is a rail ride at an amusement park -- it feels fake, but that sort of thing is fun in moderation. :) Anyways, it angers me GRRRRRRRRRRR, because DS is a much better game.

The 360 version is better by far, for IGN's case, they have different teams for each platform. For the other reviewers, I guess they just love easy games.

XBOX 360 Rooftop Run Act 1 (watch in high quality) - not easy as it looks, nothing is automatic, you gotta be good at the level to play that smoothly

360 and PS3 version is powered by the Hedgehog Engine, which was in development since 2006. Hedgehog Engine allows for rapid streaming of data and graphics that rival CGI through the use of Global Illumination

heres a quick snippet from the director about the hedgehog engine

Destructoid: Tell me about the Hedgehog Engine. What prompted you to create a brand new engine for Sonic Unleashed, and what challenges did you face in crafting something specialized for Sonic games?

Hashimoto: Around the year 2005, I had been watching various high-end game movies and felt that something was missing. Of course they were all very well created, but I felt that they had all come from a move presentation that were within the bounds of common sense and I wasn’t surprised. That was right when I decided to start the development for Sonic Unleashed and I felt that with the already existing engines and libraries I will not be able to create the movie presentation we are looking for, so that is why we had decided to create from full-scratch.

If Sonic Unleashed is the answer to "What should Sonic be?", the answer for "What game movies should be?" will be the Hedgehog Engine. The Hedgehog Engine has all the necessary libraries and tools and the lighting calculating systems as well as systems that can stream various data. The Hedgehog Engine is a comprehensive development environment.

The challenges that I faced were:

- Challenges with data reading speed as Sonic’s running speed is very fast.

- The amount of renderer calculations for the global illumination lighting, so a system development was made using 100 PCs for the distributed calculation process.

- Since the data size became too big for the global illumination lighting, fitting all the data into the Xbox 360 DVD was a challenge.

Nah it's not 'casual'. I mean yes - you can't really die. But hey that's the same in ALL games if you think about it. I mean 3 lives, health bars, infinite continues and save points to backtrack if all else fails ? So it's not really that UBI are cheating and making the game casual, they are just using another means of getting players to the end - rather than the more traditional methods of progress through game-saves / lives / health-bars / potions etc....

Personally....

Better to be on the 'easier side of life' so you can actually finish the $50/60 game you bought, than on the 'god this is getting ridiculously tough' and only experience 25-50% of the game you bought before giving up.

But anyways, I don't think it's that easy. There's still a 10-12 hour game for you to play through.
