Has there ever been a time that Apple has announced a redesigned computer (not new) and not sold it near immediately? I'm trying to get a feel for how long I'm gonna have to wait between announcement and shipping of the new MacBooks if they are announced within the next couple of weeks... Is it wishful thinking that these things will be released immediately or within a week of announcement?

Yeah, shipping within a week is wishful thinking. On an Updated product, I think the lag is generally a few weeks (2 at least). New products can take much longer- as I said before, my 17in MBP (1st gen) took around 4 months before it was SHIPPED.

If you have a real need for new hardware, the only reasons to delay are: 1) to see if the updates are worth the wait or 2) take advantage of price drops on the existing line.

I'm in camp #2, since I don't really do anything that requires cutting edge technology. On the other hand, I have a hard time forking over good cash for something that will be cheaper (or better for the same price) in a month.

I have a PowerBook G4 that is still meeting my laptop needs (with the exception of the one hour battery life), but will get a new MacBook when they come out. There's no pressing need for it, I was just curious (and impatient :) ).

This is like the 30943082th thread about this kinda stuff.

Anyways...
I'm getting tired of typing what I want/expect on all of these threads.
Grr... here's what I want/expect to happen for September through November.

iPod touch -
Now pricing: 8GB - $199 (maybe dropped), 16GB - $299, 32GB - $399, 64GB - $499 (if not now then in February).
Camera
Bluetooth
Wireless Music Sharing
Better Wifi Range
And the ability to play flash when using Safari
Plastic Backs: If this does happen then I expect there to be black and white version.

iPod classic -
New pricing: 160GB - $249; 240GB - $349 (if not now then in February)
Calculator App
Wireless Music Sharing
New Colors
Maybe a redesign

iPod nano -
New pricing: 8GB - $149; 16GB - $199
Calculator App
Wide range of colors
Even though I don't want this to happen I suspect there's going to be a redesign.

iPod shuffle -
New pricing: 2GB - $69; 4GB - $99
Possibly a screen

MacBook -
Aluminum Casing: Available in silver and black
New Hard drive sizes: 160GB; 250GB; 320GB
Low end model with superdrive
2.4GHz for the low end model; 2.66GHz for the middle and high end
I don't know why everybody wants one but I think there's going to be a glass trackpad.

Mac mini -
Low end model with super drive
New Hard drive sizes: 120GB; 160GB; and an optional 240GB
2GB Ram standard
VGA and DVI ports
2GHz for the low end model; 2.4GHz for the high end model

iMac -
2GB Ram for the low end model
320GB standard
Ram up to 8GB
Quad-Core available in the high end model

MacBook Air -
1.8GHz for the low end model - 2.1GHz in the high end model
New drive sizes - 80GB; 120GB
Maybe a combo drive if we can find a spot for it.
Available in black.

Just as an update: iPhone released officially in India. Every single person with a high-end mobile now is in the queue to book an iPhone. (Yes, it has to be booked and you need to be in queue tog et one in few weeks)

I picked up my Penryn MacBook Pro at the Apple store the same day it was confirmed...

Hi all,

Has anyone seen this article (http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/09/01/a-product-transition-giving-macbooks-the-iphone-touch/). There is some very good analysis on why this might be plausible, and some good mock-ups.

I'm not sure how useful it would be - but I'm happy to be surprised.

Someone pointed out earlier that there haven't been any FCC leaks for a new Apple product in the near future.

Question though, when the macbook pro went through a redesign a few years back were there FCC leaks? What about the iPod touch a year ago, where there FCC leaks for that right before its release? Or the iPhone?

There has been a good deal of speculation since the original iPhone shipped that the trackpad on the MacBook Pro might be replaced by a glass touchscreen.

Frankly, much of what he wrote makes sense to me.

in relation to rumors of the new itunes 8 coming on the 9th: i was looking at the article about apples new multi-touch filing (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/28/apple_details_next_gen_multi_touch_techniques_for_tablet_macs.html) i noticed in the image of the user scrolling that itunes looked a little odd...

does anyone else think so. the volume slider is under the play button, not to the side, there's a big white bar (search bar??) under the lists and extra buttons to either side at the bottom??

ALSO - look at the top of the screen. I assume this is the dock - it's not at the bottom... Looks very odd - could this be Mac OS X Tablet?? Or Snow Leopard?? And there is no taskbar thing at the top... I think this could be a tablet running Windows??

But remember - it is only an illustration... But who knows??

New macbooks with a touch screen "trackpad" would be great but wouldn't it kill any kind of windows compatibility? How can you run XP or Vista on your laptop if they aren't compatible with the new touch screen trackpad?

I guess you could bypass that problem by using a mouse.

Yeah, Boot Camp eliminates that problem.

You may or may not get the display functionality while running Windows, but it will at the very least work fine as a regular trackpad.

a friend of mine who works at the mac store (http://www.themacstore.com/) (not the apple store. these are authorized retel stores owned by a company here in Oregon) and he told me his boss said new macs will arrive on the 9th among the new ipods. Weather the boss is just going by rumors or got some "insider" info , witch I doubt. It will be interesting to what happens on the 9th...

ideally...

A super-thin MacBook Pro with a 19" 1920x1200 hi-res display, sporting a newer video card. Capacity for 8GB of RAM with new 4GB chip sizes, also can sport up to a 500GB 7200rpm internal HD or a dual 64GB (128GB) SSD drive option. Will sport a new processor, likely a 2.83GHz, 3.0GHz or 3.2GHz quad-core Motevina chip.

Basically, rundown:

19" (larger screensize MBP)
More RAM capacity
More disk space, SSD as option
Faster processors, introduce quadcore to mobile
New graphics card likely

Now, am I an idealist? That was basically what I would like to see for the future of the MBP -- it is in no way a rundown of any product Apple does (or is) likely to have in the works. Just a list of dream specs. Eventually I think all of these specs will come to fruition, just not soon likely.

To big... I think the 15" will be replaced with a 16" and the 17" will be replaced with an 18" housing new 16:9 screens. Your specs are great though

No problem, I've been hearing all the rumours about the new Macs and I found it whilst having a surf around.

New macbooks with a touch screen "trackpad" would be great but wouldn't it kill any kind of windows compatibility? How can you run XP or Vista on your laptop if they aren't compatible with the new touch screen trackpad?

I guess you could bypass that problem by using a mouse.

Well, I'd still expect the trackpad to work as a trackpad regardless of if anything was displayed underneath it or not, so I'd expect Windows to still be able to use it either in a VM or BootCamp as it does now. You just won't have access to any of the funky new features.

I think the whole touchscreen tackpad is useless. How does it know when you are using it for a mouse and when your clicking on the interface?

I suspect it's something like the way the iPhone can work out if you are pressing a button or dragging something else around, or maybe a quick toggle between the two (top-left corner tap or something).

However I suspect if this rumour/idea is even remotely true Apple will have developed it in a way that we don't anticipate - but it will be really cool. I can't see them making a product that has bad usability - they want to increase usability, so whatever it is - it will be intuitive to use.

**RUMOR ALERRT**

This is my first official "rumor" but I am almost positive that Apple and Google are working out a turn by turn gps feature using the Street View in Maps for the iPhone. Google has been working overtime covering as much ground as possible including residential in all the major cities around the US.

Rumor is that the next iPhone 2.1 update will feature Turn By Turn Directions using Google's Street View technology so that users will actually be able to see panoramic images of streets they are driving down while they are driving.

It's been a possible for some time, and I imagine the rumors of it here stretch way back - I know it was being mentioned in May (e.g. here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=5449177&postcount=505) (though I'm sure there is a longer post to link to)).

I'd imagine Google would push it with Android, for GPS enable phones if / when they push Street View to the mobile. A similar thing to Google Earth can run on a mobile, so why not?

Going one further, would be Panoramio - push the Google Photosynth on a phone. Amongst other things... e.g. here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=5677444&postcount=882)

On a different tack - larger mulitouch touch pad or instead, a larger multitouch display on laptops? I could see them bringing in a non-display pad 1st, but the latest rumors are pushing the display element.

In addition to the LCD 'Book touchpads, I think we are going to see a similar keyboard or adjunct desktop device released simultaneously with this feature for iMacs, Mac Pros and Minis.

This is going to be a Mac feature across the board, not just a feature on portables.

I am not sure if it will be part of the keyboard or a touchpad next to or attached to the side of the keyboard, but there is no way that they limit this to portables.

I'm ready to hop down to the Apple Store on the 9th to get whatever it is. I am sure this LCD touch screen is what Jobs meant when he talked about the new tech advantage that others couldn't match. I just hope if it is detached from the desktop keyboard, that it works as a remote too. I also don't want to use my iPhone or buy an over-priced Touch to do this. This device doesn't need multi-GBs of storage.

NB: Obviously the new Nano isn't a touch device given the nature of the new cases.

Anyone else noticed that the iTunes Store (at least the U.S. one) hasn't had it's normal Tuesday update? Doesn't that usually happen when there's going to be an update of some kind? Of course it's entirely possible that it's just due to the holiday yesterday...

It's pretty simple to know when a new iphone update is due - plug your iphone in, itunes opens then look at the date when the iphone will automatically check for a new update - at the moment it's 9/9/08 so this is when the 2.1 software is going to be out.

That's weird my itunes has always listed the exact date of any software updates as the date it will next check for updates - happened with 1.x/2.0/2.01/2.02/and now with 2.1.

Just realised that you must be in the US cause I read that date as the 9th of April 2008 - I can never get my head round month/day/year format it just doesn't make sense to me...

But on UK itunes the date for updates is 9/9/08 (day/month/year)

IT-Pro
Sep 2, 2008, 08:59 AM
The date doesn't predict anything. iTunes checks for software-updates one time a week. If you check now, iTunes will check again next Tuesday which happens to be September 9th. It's more like a coincidence actually.

I suppose if an event would take place next Tuesday Apple would have to send invitations at least one week before the event. So if there is an event we should have invitations surfacing today.

My iTunes says it will be checking for an update again on 04/09/2008.

It has nothing to do with an exact release date of new software.

so if it's checking a week from whatever the current date is tomorrow it should say the 10th? or when you get to the 4th it should say the 11th? It's listed the Exact date for every update that's come out. :o

Normally they invite media at least one week before the event takes place. Since Cupertino is just waking up right now it's far too early to say there won't be any invitations.

If an event takes place, invitations will be sent out today or tomorrow. Yesterday they didn't because of Labor day in the U.S. So most probable would be today, exactly one week before the event.

Well, *****. I am going to be in class at that time, but thankfully I'm going to be able to find out TODAY whether or not I can watch a liveblog during class! :D

"Let's Rock!" is about as ambiguous a name as it gets. EVER.

Here are my speculations (playing on WHY it's so goddamned ambiguous):

1) Definitely some kind of iTunes subscription service. Wouldn't be surprised to see Apple take the Xbox Live route, giving different durations of time for different prices (and they can't say that Microsloth copied them this time...)

2) New iPods, with a iPod touch being more or less the Prepaid iPhone; has GPS, mobile broadband (maybe with Sprint, since it's iPod instead of iPhone?), and a better iTunes Wi-Fi Store interface and uses.

3) iTunes 8.0, with the aforementioned subscription service, re-vamped radio, and a new On-Demand Television service. Also some iTunes announcements, like Walt Disney Records going iTunes Plus on EVERY album (even their catalog releases). However, since Metallica quietly creeped onto the iTunes Store, I think their surprise iTunes-related announcement is (finally, it's about ********** time) BEATLES ON iTUNES!

4) A new iTunes-related device (can anybody say Kindle Killer?) and an :apple:TV update.

That is all.

Still hoping for a revamped touch though, something more distinguished from the iPhone line.

Just get rid of the green background for a white one and it'll look nice! But sadly this is not going to see fruition!

My dream performance laptop.

it is. plus we are moving to 16:9 so we WOULD be using 16 and 18" models.
