As rumors continue to build of upcoming Apple product updates, more hints are starting to suggest that Apple will be holding a special event in September to launch these new products.
A rumor (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/22/new-ipod-nano-ipod-touch-itunes-8-0-blu-ray-in-10-6/) over the weekend originating from Kevin Rose suggesting that we could see iPod Nano and iPod Touch updates in the next few weeks. A subsequent report (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/25/itunes-8-and-ipod-nanos-on-sept-9th/) from Rose indicated that September 9th could be the date for the launch.
While we had initially housed that rumor on our Page 2 (http://page2.macrumors.com) (rss (http://www.macrumors.com/page2.xml)) which consolidates minor news and unverified tidbits, but an ArsTechnica article (http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/08/25/rumor-apple-event-for-september-9th) has suggested that there may be some validity to that "general date".
More possible case photos (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/25/more-4th-gen-ipod-nano-and-2nd-gen-ipod-touch-cases/) for the upcoming 4th Gen iPod Nano and 2nd Generation iPod Touch have also been posted to Page 2 (http://page2.macrumors.com/).

I don't think Apple can wait too long before responding to the Montevina offerings of other manufacturers. Whether they choose Montevina or another (nVidia) chipset, laptop upgrades have to be coming soon. Plus there's the language that was used during Apple's recent financial results conference call, about a product transition that would affect Q4 revenue - in other words, would affect revenue before the end of September.

For those of us who are waiting for a MacBook Pro redesign, this is reminding me more and more of the time prior to the iPhone release. We anticipated a notebook refresh yet most of the rumors were about the iPhone. Now all we hear and see are iPod concepts and rumors.....doesn't look good folks but I hope I'm wrong!!!

They do announce events ahead of time because they want the press to make arrangements to attend.

Even if the iPod Nano goes to a new form factor and the iPod Touch gets closer to the iPhone in terms of functionality (with the rumored addition of GPS), would Apple want to do a major event just for that?
Would not such an event also be a good time to launch the new MacBook, especially if it is going to Al, since it would tie in with the new-look Nano and the new-feature Touch?

Let's go back in time and see what Apple has done at the September Media Event over the past few years.
9/7/05
iTunes 5
Motorola ROKR
iPod nano replaces the mini
9/12/06
iPod video
iPod nano update
iPod shuffle update
iTunes 7
downloadable videos (Apple Music Store becomes the Apple Store)
Apple TV
One More Thing: movies
9/5/07
new colors for shuffle, woohoo :P
nano update
iPod classic
iPod touch
Seeing a pattern here? Apple holds their September Event to promote their iPod lines and to announce new iTunes services.
My predictions are relatively conservative: We'll see iTunes 8, and all of the iPods will get a significant upgrade. I think the iPod nano pictures that have been leaked to us are fakes - the curved screens are really ugly, and their glossiness will be distracting.
Notice how Apple hasn't done anything yet to the iPod Touch despite the iPhone 3G's release two months ago: they're clearly trying to categorize it separately from the iPhone brand. GPS is likely if only because so many App Store applications rely on the positioning API.
Apple really believes in its product line differentiation and won't muddy the iPod-centric September event with notebook news. If MacBook upgrades are coming, Apple will wait until later to announce them - probably in October or November. Capella won't be out until the middle of 2009, and that's just too long to go without an upgrade. They'll do a Penryn bump with a form factor change for now, then advertise Capella's blazing speeds in 2009.
I have no idea where the iTablet fits into any of this. If it's being sold as an iPhone variant, we might hear some news in September. But it's probably going to be marketed as something else, with web browsing and multitouch as the main selling points; remember that the iPhone was originally codenamed "Safari Pad". I do think it's coming at some point; netbooks are finally taking hold in the marketplace, and Apple, fueled by over a decade of research, is going to master it.

This rumor kinda sounds like last year's rumor when they were speculating Sept. 5 for the new iPods. I think September 9th is a very good idea. They could announce new iPod nano, iPod touch, new MacBook and MacBook Pro, along with the price drops for the iPod's. But Sept. 9th is during school for me. That day is going to be a slow day...:(

i hope its actual new MBP's as well and MB's in a new case.
BUT the date seems wrong no? the current back to school promo ends the 15th I think and the 16th is a Tuesday :-) why announce new products when they won't be part of the promo?
on that note I'd rather have the event sooner then later :-)

I'd be more impressed if Apple concentrated on fixing the problems it has now with the iPhone, and the tragic changes it made to iCal, first. Leopard's Time Machine has hosed two external hard drives on my system, and I have a Mac Pro. Their attentions seem rather divided, and not for the better. Personally, this long-time user of Macs (since 1983) is going to hold off on buying any more Apple products until the uproar turns into more of a purr.

That's what I tend to think as well. Announcing updated macbooks/macbook pros that don't qualify for the back to school promo, while the promo is still going on is a bit odd.
But then again, Apple announced the iPod touch around the end of the back to school promo and just didn't include it in the promo qualifier.
With iPods I don't think there would be as much of a problem introducing them while the promo is still going on since the functionality will be relatively the same. They'll play videos just as well, play music just as well. But with computers.....ehhh I dunno. I can see a lot of people just not buying a laptop and holding out for the udpated ones. The Montevina updates, the aluminum casing, possible DDR3, non exploding graphics cards, better battery life, etc...
I had friends in college who went the first few months of classes with nothing but notebook paper and the public library computers in order to secure the latest laptop and not be one of the suckers that gets the hand-me-down shovelware.
And let's be honest, that's what the back to school promo is for. It allows them to clear out their inventory so they aren't stuck with piles of out dated computers that they're then forced to sell at a drastically lower price.

Well Apple won't need Calpella to use the mobile Nehalems, even if they move to nVidia mobile chipsets using Penryn CPUs in the near-term, so they could very well use this event to refresh the iPod line and launch iTunes 8 and then set-up a separate event in a month or two to show off the new MacBook and MacBook Pro line and then keep that line to a six and twelve month minor refresh schedule going forward.

True, I could see that. The updated iPods they don't seem to have a problem releasing at the same time as the promo. The laptops I could see them doing that and just saying "shipping in 4 weeks" and play it off as a "needing to build up units" story.
They have to make sure to make that "x weeks" a big enough gap so that the kiddies don't hold out for the updates. Because then they're stuck with a bunch of older hardware they are then forced to significantly discount additionally.

Sorry, I conflated Capella with mobile Nehalem.
The latest news from IDF is that mobile Nehalem won't be out until the middle of next year.
EDIT: Quad-core mobile Penryn is an option, though

Invitations to the press usually go out around a week before the event itself, so if it is indeed September 9th, then expect them either at the very end of this week, or early next week.
Of course, copies of the invitation get posted on these forums instantly, and then people spend the week arguing that the full stop in the slogan is actually a graphical representation of the new iPod, or other such nonsense. :)

Good point, but that far into the promotion (with one week to go), how many iPod's and old Macbooks do you think that they have left in stock? I've seen a few reports on iPod shortages, and don't forget the "leaked memo" a few weeks back predicting shortages in laptop stocks. I think they're running low already...

Jobso acknowledged to his team at AAPL that they tried too push too many things out-da-door during the iPhone launch. For the person Steve Jobs is I m pretty sure he wont be repeating his mistake again.... especially after acknowledging his wrong move not so long ago.
Even though m waiting on a MBP rev, I believe we wont see iPod and portables being rolled out at same time. They will trickle it down one at a time.
Just imagine a scenario where new iPods and portables are launched in one go and they come across bugs on both product line....
Apple is already busy solving the iPhone-3G and mobileME bugs the last thing they want id another Product line melt down. Not happening IMHO.

I saw an ad for a Sony "HDTV & Computer" all-in-one, and it made me think back to Apple referencing 'lower margins', I have to believe the margins on these TVs are lower than Apple's typical margins. To me it makes sense to have a new product that possibly has inherently lower margins versus willingly dropping margins on something that is in high demand (e.g. iMac and MacBook). Granted I'm not sure what the advantage for the consumer is on an Apple brand TV.
However, and I know this isn't sexy, but now that my contacts are on my computer, my ipod, and my wife's iphone ... I just wish my home phone was made by Apple and had a wifi chip to also sync the contacts.
Has this ever occurred to anyone else?

I've gone through numerous ipods and iphones (got the 3g now) but I haven't had a Apple computer in over 15yrs. I'm waiting for the a MBP rev to finnaly join the club. I hope hope hope that it will come in September, for I need a laptop desperately for college.
Here is my fear though. For one all of these increasing rumors of ipod revamps and the sudden death of any Macbook / pro updates has worried and saddened me. I've also been pondering this thought; I read a rumor on this site that was talking about possible bluray playing in 'Snow Leopard.' It would be vary odd to me for Apple to release bluray support and not have the hardware to utilize it. I'd Imagine that Snow-Leopard would be released around WWDC. So would Apple release new Macbook/pro notebooks with no bluray drives and then a couple months later release an OS that supports bluray?
So I would believe that Apple would release Snow-leopard at least on if not before new Macbooks if it does in fact support bluray.

Why do I have a feeling that this media event is going to be exclusive to these products, while a notebook refresh will happen at a later time...

Nothing is mentioned in the news item, except iPods. Kevin Rose also spoke of a new version of iTunes.
Why do I have a feeling that this media event is going to be exclusive to these products, while a notebook refresh will happen at a later time...
I dunno, I just haven't seen any of these rumors actually pointing to a notebook refresh on September 9th. All I keep hearing about are iPods and iTunes.
same here
I think we're gonna still wait a long time before we get new notebooks:(:(

Good point, but that far into the promotion (with one week to go), how many iPod's and old Macbooks do you think that they have left in stock? I've seen a few reports on iPod shortages, and don't forget the "leaked memo" a few weeks back predicting shortages in laptop stocks. I think they're running low already...
And that's a really good question. As tight lipped as Apple is about things like that, I don't know how easy it is to estimate.
I think they time it just right though.
Stop production early enough so that by the time the back to school promo is over you have very very few of the old units left. Then you just recycle the aluminum/superdrive/anything else and sell the rest as replacement parts.

The MBA update is almost guaranteed. As are the iPod updates.
The MacBook Pro update is likely, the MacBook update much less so.
I don't believe BluRay support will be in 10.5.6 or the new MacBook Pro. I think it'll be announced in January, when it's added to the Mac Pro and announced as a feature for Snow Leopard, and be available as a BTO option for the MacBook Pro. BR is too big of a feature for a x.x.1 update. Here are Apple's choices:
- Add it to the MacBook Pro. Add provisional support to Leopard. More development time to an OS that's got its days numbered. Can't add HDCP support (major new feature, have to update all GPU drivers and major OS code. Lots to support with no testing ability beforehand). No HDCP means no DVD Player support, or support that could break at any point. Only data options available, but then, BD Data isn't that widespread. Why rush it? People don't expect it. It's not urgent.
- Leave it until January. Announce it for Snow Leopard (where HDCP and DVD Player support can be added), and add it to the Mac Pro, ready for the imminent release. Developers will have all the hardware necessary to test HDCP on beta releases before it ships, and it can be a BTO option for the MBP (mini upgrade. Makes people think the line is significantly updated when they've only replaced a drive).
Apple have learnt not to do too much at one time. New hardware in the notebook and iPod lines, together with imminent releases of OSX 10.5 and MobileOSX 2.1, and ongoing Snow Leopard development, should keep them occupied. Adding a major new feature to Leopard, without much testing being done, or an incomplete and useless solution (HDCP), is stupid.
Personally, I'm just hoping for an update to Logic Studio right after the event. It's nearly been a year, and fits any announcement of Quicktime 8...

Why do people think the screen is curvered? its the body thats that way NOT the screen. a lot said the "fat" nano is fat and large, but its the smallest ipod and even the smallest apple product bedsides the shuffle
If the curved one is the new nano then it has major design flaws:
1.) Curved transparent plastic face for the screen==Lots and lots of glare.
2.) Plastic curved face == Scratch magnet like 1st gen Nano (intentional design flaw).
3.) Curved back == cannot be placed on table/flat surface to watch video's.
The screen will definitely be flat but the curved plastic bezel mars the screen viewability.

I really hope we get a very good iTunes 8.
All the talk regarding this supposed event is about iPods though, not computers. :mad:This is interesting.
The large number of iPod rumors and the lack of Mac rumors pertaining to this event suggest that this event will be iPod-related, and that there won't be any Macs announced/released at the event.
But, Apple has released products the week before an event and at the end of a month. So, September 2 and September 30 are likely dates. They also fit in with the September notebook update rumors.
And where are those Mac tablet rumors? :D
I have no idea where the iTablet fits into any of this. If it's being sold as an iPhone variant, we might hear some news in September. But it's probably going to be marketed as something else, with web browsing and multitouch as the main selling points; remember that the iPhone was originally codenamed "Safari Pad".I can see that for an iPhone OS tablet. A Mac OS X tablet, I assume, is going to focus on other things as well (multi-touch iLife etc.).
What are the odds that we'll see iLife '09 and iWork '09?Not likely, I think. But wasn't iLife '08 and iWork '08 (not '07) not rumored until close to the August event last year? I think hardware is rumored much more than software. Despite this, the absolute lack of '09 rumors tells me we won't see iLife '09 and iWork '09 anytime soon. I'd say MWSF 2009 or sometime around then.

I never noticed how much Steve Jobs looked different although I do hope he stays well enough health wise for himself if not for Apple.
As far as September I am surprised the event was not early August like last year. I am assuming Ipod nano, maybe some iphone game controllers? Lso I saw a post on another site that referenced some cases for iPod touch 2G zollotech.com I thought it was interesting but it doesn't show much.I would think there would be some sort of physical update though if there are new cases. I was also thinking there would be, or I shoudl say I was hoping for a mac mini refresh or a tablet would be the ultimate. Keeping fingers crossed

It seems that there is a problem with the Sept. 9 date for iPod/MacBook updates. Isn't it true that Apple's Back To School offer runs until Sept. 15? Apple says that if you, as a student, buy a Mac between now and Sept. 15 you can get a free iPod with your purchase. Thus, how can Apple introduce new iPods just a week before this offer ends?
Much more like is that new iPods will be introduced on Sept. 16, the Tuesday after Sept. 15. This means that you'll be able to buy from the existing stock of Macs up through the weekend of Sept. 13 and 14, Monday will be the buffer, and on Tuesday Sept. 16 Apple will be able to update their iPods while fulfilling the free iPod offer with existing stock of the then "old" generation iPods.
It's also true that Apple COULD update the MacBook and MacBook Pro come September since new chips from Intel and PC competition indicate that the update should be soon.
Given that the v2.1 firmware for the iPhone/iTouch is also expected in September it looks to be a very busy month for Apple. However, since Apple rumor almost always exceeds reality I think it is likely that something from the above will almost certainly miss the September timeline.
Thus, I guessing we'll have new iPods on Sept. 16, new iPhone v2.1 firmware no later than Tuesday, Sept. 30 (most likely on or near that date), and new MacBooks in October.

The new trend coming in computer (desktop and laptop) displays is to use 16:9 panels to match HDTVs (as opposed to the 16:10 panels now used). Many of those new panels will be different sizes then current ones due to the new aspect ratio, so a 17" 16:10 panel will become an 18" 16:9 panel.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/08/25/rumor-apple-event-for-september-9th
After a little goading, Rose first said the rumor of subscription music coming to iTunes was false, then offered up a new piece of information about what will be in version 8.

Likely sooner than later since it would tie into their "digital content / lifestyle" aspect and as production moves over to them, 16:10 screens will get more expensive due to lack of volume (just as 4:3 screens did when most production was moved to 16:10).

1. Rose made it clear that the iTunes + Sept 9 source was different than the iPod source.

Yeah but if it's the 9th, why do a mac release a week before the iPod/Mac deal (back to school) ends.
I don't think they want a huge bunch of returns, unless they think for some reason, students are still buying "for" school.
I think Apple has learned, so, when you see products NO LONGER in the stores, that's the sign these days that a newer product(s) is/are coming, shoot, they did it for the airport express - remember? The G series was off the shelves for almost a month before the "n" speed arrived.

If this date is true, then, as many people have pointed out, it comes before the end of the Back-to-School Promotion. Thus, its reasonable to expect that the actual release of the new iPods will be sometime shortly after September 15th. In my opinion, this will push back any potential MacBook release to mid-October at earliest.

I still think this is PRICE CUTS first, new products in NOVEMBER maybe OCTOBER - have to wait these days to see the products not in stock - that is the give away, they don't like having two weeks worth of stuff coming back to them.

Lots of us in the same boat. Given all the buzz about new iPods and the silence in rumorland about MB/MBP, in addition to Apple's likely aversion to launching multiple new products at once, doesn't look good for those of us who have been yearning for a new laptop all summer and even earlier.
Suppose Apple puts priority on raising excitement among the iPod hordes before Christmas. They know we (Mac computer users) will be around...
As insanity-inducing as a wait thru Oct, even Nov, might be, we need to brace ourselves for such a traumatic autumn

Exactly, let's see, back to school PROMO NOT ended yet = NO NEW MACBOOKS.
We're looking at October at the earliest, probably November.
I think, maybe some price cuts though and then, if Apple were really smart, add GPU's from top to bottom, differenciate the MACBOOK from the PRO buy offering 4 cores on the MBP, that would set them apart BIG TIME and if they could keep them at the present price (or close) you would have PRO'S (less than 1~2% of market anyway) buying PRO machines for work, Macbooks (games, 3d, not to worried about machines) as a second computers.
See, if Apple did release GPU on all machines and made MBP with 4 cores, PRO's would buy two (2) machines as the 4 cores would for sure be worth it as the rendering would be cut in half, something a PRO would use without question and knowing they could buy a $799 Macbook with GRAPHICS would be a no brainer - one machine for PRO work, the second for lounging, taking on the trips, and still able to work.
Also need to update the MACBOOK displays though.
BLESSINGS ALL!!!

It seems some people forgot the iPod touch was announced before the end of the back to school promotion last year (September 5th, I think). The iPod was simply released a few weeks later. The back to school promotion is done to clear Apple's backstock of Macbooks and whatever iPods they are planning on updating (this year it's the iPod touch and/or nano). But you never know with Apple, so we shall see... ;)

as a 15.4" model will be the new 16" model. Sony and acer are the big guys in this. Acer with their 16 and 18" models and sony with a 16" model. As blu-ray becomes cheeper, its more a chance they will get in to peoples homes and more people want it on their computers.. Having a 16:9 screen is better for blu-ray then a 16:10. I've seen 16:9 notebooks and I like what I see.
What per cent chance do you see the new Macs switching to 16:9 ratio?
I hope they do.
If the macs get blu-ray soon then it may be soon. Blu-ray is only good at its native res. 16:9. and I'm sure apple will go blu-ray sometime. I mean thats where the market is. You should care because the iPod are the future of Macs and Apple. Someday your iPhone will be the only computer you will need. Bring it home and wirelessly connect with a keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer.
Never fear though as if you lose your iPhone MobileMe has you backed-up and you can call or email to have your iPhone remotely wiped. Once you get your new iPhone all your apps, settings, data will be sent to your new phone upon request.
When Apple releases the mobile edition of iWork and iLife this concept will take another step forward.
I look forward to this way of computing but I would opt for a iPod Touch over the iPhone. :D

Some more evidence towards an October/November MacBook release:

It seems some people forgot the iPod touch was announced before the end of the back to school promotion last year (September 5th, I think). The iPod was simply released a few weeks later. The back to school promotion is done to clear Apple's backstock of Macbooks and whatever iPods they are planning on updating (this year it's the iPod touch and/or nano). But you never know with Apple, so we shall see... ;)
I thought the touch came out along with the other ipods (classic and fat nano)
What makes you so sure? Why do October or November not make sense?
If the iPods are released on September 9th, I don't see how the MacBooks could be released in the same month.
what makes you so sure they wont be relased in october or November, Truth is no one sure some rather belive "september is ipod ONLY month while others have an open mind...

Some more evidence towards an October/November MacBook release:

-All of the MacBook Pro second-half releases have been in October or November (except for the one in September 2003).
doesnt really mean anything. We are expecting MAJOR updates not just a simple speed/spec bump

This has probably been mentioned before, but no one seems to remember. Last year's update was before the end of the promotion. They simply modified the free iPod agreement to exclude all new models. Quite simple. I distinctly remember walking in to purchase my MBP and checking out the new fat Nanos. I walked out of the store with a MBP and a 8GB 2G Nano.
Also, if I recall correctly, it wasn't that the Touches were shipping at a later date, it was just that for some reason they weren't in stock right away. I don't believe Steve said anything about them specifically launching any later. Just... Production issues or something.
In short, the 9th is entirely plausible.
Also I wouldn't expect notebook changes till the 30th at least. Probably later. But that's just me.

Yeah but if it's the 9th, why do a mac release a week before the iPod/Mac deal (back to school) ends.
I don't think they want a huge bunch of returns, unless they think for some reason, students are still buying "for" school.

Exactly, let's see, back to school PROMO NOT ended yet = NO NEW MACBOOKS.
I was going to let the stupidity of that statement slide until I saw the caps. Just last year, Apple introduced the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro and the new iMacs during the Back 2 School promotion.

iMacmatician, what is your prediction on what is to happen tomorrow? Do you think any thing is going to happen at all? I would like to see your opinion.I don't think we'll see anything today. Generally by this time or so there are some last-minute hints of any new product, even for minor Mac updates. The lack of such hints tells me that either the update is so minor it went under the radar, or there is no update (much more likely).
They can make, and have made before, those iPods ineligible for the promotion.
Ok, why is every one thinking the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros would be released in October or November?
I am still 99% sure it is September.
It does not make much sense for October or November.Ask those people who still seem to think the MacBook won't go aluminum and the MacBook Pro won't be redesigned until 2009.
All the rumors point to September (or October at the latest), and most point to the later part of September. That and the fact that Apple has released products at the end of a month before leads me to speculate a September 30 update.

What about stores currently running out of MB/MBP and the rumor saying that Apple suggested shops to load up their stock for august? If the new notebooks will arrive in oct/nov, does this meen MB/MBP will be out of stock and hard to get? It's possible, since the iPhone was out for quite a while before the release of the iPhone 3G. Also, the iMac G4 was out for the better part of the summer and back-to-school season before the release of the iMac G5 in August 2004.
Although a September update is most likely, an October/November update is possible if Apple had originally slated the notebooks for September, but unforeseen circumstances forced Apple to delay their release a month or so. It's also possible that there is an announcement in September, but the actual release is some time later.

I never noticed how much Steve Jobs looked different although I do hope he stays well enough health wise for himself if not for Apple.Actually, if you go back and look through photos, the latest look for Steve was probably most noticible for the reason that he was completely clean-shaven. Steve just doesn't do a clean face and has sported the scrub/full beard for a very long time (back when he was hiding the pudge in '01 when he was annoucing iPod 1.0).
I truly believe he was approx. the same weight from the past couple of years, but without the beard to cover his thin face, we just noticed it more but didn't really know what had changed.

Well I have been waiting awhile to update.
I have a Powerbook G4 667mhz -
Was going to upgrade this past summer, but all of the LED issues popped up.
Seems that the Nvidia graphics card in the Macbook pros (as well as the ones in the PC line up of the same version) are corrupt. - I believe its the 8600 and 8400?
Anyway, hoping they put in a new card - and have the LED issues solved finally.
Dont know, but the Lenova with the built in Wacom, Blu Ray drive/burner, and quad core laptop is looking nice. (Sept launch as well.)
Yes, I have been a die hard mac fan for 12+ years...but I wish Apple would put some more of the things in there Im looking for - again, to each their own. (At least they can finally get past all the battery, power chord and other issues that have been a plague to macbooks ever since I owned a Pismo G3.)

Aug 26, 2008, 06:53 AM
I can't imagine the updates will be anything that expansive.
iPods & iPhones - of course. This line is Steve's baby now and they are working them up to keep ahead of an eager market trying to catch up to an obvious and gigantic technical lead. These will take away any serious care given to the other items Apple works up. iPhones just updated, so no new iPhone update this time, all iPods.
LCDs - not likely. What can they do? Change the screen and thus keep prices high? Add an iSight (doubt it)? They can make them cheaper, but I can't see them making them much bigger or more functional.
Macbooks - maybe a new shell and faster CPU, bigger drives. Nothing amazing.
MacPro, MacMini - Maybe higher processors. Why rework great designs at this time?
If a new shell *yawn* for a Macbook is excitement, this is probably your time. I doubt Apple is going to do anything exciting outside of iPods unless they actually have a tablet in the works which split off from the iPhone technology. Jobs mentioned last year he will be diverting attention to the iPhone development for a stretch of time. But, maybe we'll be surprised in September.
Aside from a MacBook shell and the iPod I suspect the big updates to much of Apple's stuff will come in January.

Apple makes 'Big Brother' CCTV video surveillance play
Tue, 08/26/2008 - 07:27 — Andy Space
Here's an unusual one that's crossed our desk this morning - Apple's getting into the crowded Big Brother CCTV market, and will appear with leading security vendor, videoNEXT (love the Next in that name) at a special event next month.
Yep, that's right, the company that once praised the crazy ones is now looking to deploy its technologies in new ways in order to keep an eye on people, so they don't get too crazy...
So, what's the deal? OK - "videoNEXT and Apple will be co-hosting a panel of industry experts who will be discussing the future of video surveillance and where video meets information technology," we've been told.
Chance for a demo of new video kit, or a video take on iphone etc? Remote view, use of iSights etc.

It looks like September holds the promise of great announcements from Apple. Radical new products will increase profits and in turn drive the stock up.

Plus there's the language that was used during Apple's recent financial results conference call, about a product transition that would affect Q4 revenue - in other words, would affect revenue before the end of September. So the Mac tablet is coming after all?! It may be released at the iPod event on September 9. But since it's just one product, it would have to make a really big impact on its revenue to make a significant impact on total revenue.
Maybe the product transition is the switch to multi-touch glass trackpads on all notebooks, as well as multi-touch Mighty Mouse for desktops. However, I really can't see that affecting revenue unless there was a display on them or something.
It looks like the tablet is most likely.
Apple also described their formula for introducing "state of the art new products at prices their competitors can't match". They explain that these new products introduce new "technologies and features" (like the iPhone), justifying their initial higher prices. Over time, they expect to take advantage of scale and engineering to drive prices down. Apple suggested that they would follow this formula again and are "very excited" about what they have in their new product pipeline. The only thing that I can see that fits here is the tablet. I can't see any Macs fitting this (unless they had, say, custom chipsets), and the mini-tablet is, hardware-wise, a bigger iPod touch.
I see... that means the store is smaller, but has all the stuff inside.
It is an awkward time to redo things, but then again if this is happening in almost every store I would suspect a ramp up for new products with some special display. It's for the tablet! :p

If Apple moves to nVidia, that means a new iMac, a new Mac Mini, a new MacBook and a new MacBook Pro. So four new models being launched in quick succession. Apple will likely need a few weeks just to space those various launches out in order to both prime the channel with product.
Apple might launch the MacBook and MacBook Pro together because a MacBook with an integrated 8-series GPU is going to compare very nicely with the current MacBook Pro. So Apple likely won't want to wait a week for the MBP, but will instead launch it (with a 9-series GPU) simultaneously. One to two weeks later they could roll out the new Mac Mini and then the new iMac two to four weeks after that.

Not necessarily, what's to stop Apple using intel chipsets for say the iMac and Mac Pro, while nvidia for the the Macbooks. Though in all likely hood they would switch one manufacturer completely. Just saying.

Maybe the product transition is the switch to multi-touch glass trackpads on all notebooks, as well as multi-touch Mighty Mouse for desktops. However, I really can't see that affecting revenue unless there was a display on them or something.
The product and effect on gross margins might be being overhyped, due to potentially overly ambitious/non-realistic views on potential products in the pipeline they could have.
e.g. check out http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/08/24/whats-next-from-apple-new-ipods-sept-22-iphone-os-21-itunes-80/#comments
Peter Oppenheimer's comments might be being overblown. Might be, as we can easily hypothesise multitouch being added, iTablets, form factor changes - all sorts of things to affect gross margin, or be called a "product transition".
PO talked about transitions/ affects on gross margins in many other prior earning calls -
e.g. F2Q08 - gross margin decline pegged in part on a product transition - Leopard coming in.
F4Q07 - had a product transition of an all new iPod line up, with gross margin guided down in part due to impact of recent product transitions.
F3Q07 - Expected gross margin to be ~29.5%, with hey presto, BTS, commodity costs, and product transitions pegged as the reasons.

Not necessarily, what's to stop Apple using intel chipsets for say the iMac and Mac Pro, while nvidia for the the Macbooks. Though in all likely hood they would switch one manufacturer completely. Just saying.
The Mac Pro will stay Intel because nVidia does not make a Xeon chipset and they may not have a QPI license which, if true, would not allow them to make a chipset that works with the dual-processor Core i7/Nehalems which the next Mac Pro will certainly use.
Yes, Apple could likely keep the iMac on the current "Santa Rosa Special" platform until such point they migrate to the mobile Core i7/Nehalem platform in a year. I do not believe Apple is moving to nVidia for just a single generation, but instead for the long-haul, the MacBook, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini will all be using nVidia's chipset when they are migrated to Core i7/Nehalem so the iMac will have to migrate to that platform as well. And if nVidia does have (or obtains) a QPI license, then the Mac Pro could also be moved to nVidia.

So revised iPods and redesigned notebooks can be counted as a product transition. Well that makes sense.
Not to knock being hopeful for a iTablet - heck, Wacom didn't even have a product out shipping last year...I'm not that hopeful for a tablet either—but for different reasons.

People keep saying the 16th and no sooner for new products, and it's soooo annoying.
Just a recap of things that were release last year before the iPod deal was over:
Brand new iMacs!
Updated MacBook Pros!
Newly introduced iPod touches!
Did I miss anything?
It doesn't matter about the stupid, freaking promotion. It's very likely that they can and will release something before the promo is over. There is clauses in the promo that eliminates any NEW version of iPod touch or iPod nano, if one were to be released during the promo from counting as part of the rebate. Meaning you wouldn't get a free touch or nano if they were upgraded or revised during this period. (This also works with the clause 'While supplies last.')
If they update any of the computers, the promotion says ANY MAC COMPTUER (I think there was one exception, like the Mini and Pro or something), meaning that any computer, whether it is updated or not, will still count for the iPod deal, unless the iPods are updated. Just like the iMac still counted for the deal last year.
So, please, stop saying after the 15th. Realise that new products are often released during the Back to School promotion and the promotion won't stop Apple from releasing a new product if they want to do so. And lets move on with the discussion. Here, I'll even give you a topic:
How many products do you think Apple is willing to introduce at one time, especially after the MobileMe/iPhone incident?
Now, all of this is my understanding, but I may be wrong about the details; still the fact that things are release regardless of promos remains the same. If I am wrong, please correct me. If not, can we move on?

when I was at my mac store on saturday, I peeked into the back of the store and saw a really large pallet of boxes that was still shrink-wrapped.
I know, I know, there's like 1/100th of a chance that it actually meant something, but - considering that rumors of hardware updates are thick in the air I was a little bit excited.
I'd love to see the price of the iPod classic go down...

If there are no new products announced in September, certainly they will be announced in October to bring to fruition the statement by the Apple CFO in July.
That statement was about Q4, which we're in right now. Q4 ends at the end of September.

I have one of each. It entirely depends on what your usage will be. The classic is terrific as a music player, the screen is a bit small for video. The touch has an amazing range of capabilities (and even more now thanks to the app store), the screen size is better for video, but its music interface is extremely clumsy.
Of course, new models may change everything.

I agree that the music interface is clumsy. I had trouble finding and playing and adjusting volumes on my friend's Touch. The classic is way easier for that and click-wheel works perfectly just for this very thing.
I'm wanting to see the touch go up in capacity before I consider one. Until then my classic will do just fine, but I am excited about getting a touch within the next few years, with the apps store and all.
So I guess it really does depend on your usage. If it's mostly strictly for music, go for the classic for easy music browsing and more storage capacity. If you want apps and more games and things, go for the touch.
They should make an application where it opens your music up with the top half being like a Classic screen and then the bottom half have a on-screen click wheel to navigate. If only I was good with Apps. I'd make one and make tonnes of money :D

The closer we get to this September event the less it would see plausible. At the most they might unveil something really cool for orders in late November, but I doubt Apple would reveal something like a tablet before it is almost ready to ship.

From 9to5mac:
9to5mac says this is going down September 16th, so I guess Ipods and macbooks (pro's) should be launched on another date... 9th?????:):)

I used to think this too, then realized it just isn't the way Apple operates. And I suspect, not know, why they put stuff in mid-September and early January...
They clear out old stock!
Students and Christmas shoppers are the maggots on the Apple, eating the dead flesh, and cleaning the old stock out. Apple has sales in time for the big push to college and holidays, get the old crap out and bux back in, instead of just having loads of unwanted junk sitting around to be trashed or cannibalized and earning no cash for products made.
All that stuff 'no body buys' in January when they release it gets eaten up in the sales later in the year. Very tidy business work.

I can't hardly wait, will it be a new Mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, Ipod, Itouch, or a Mid-range Tower? I hate to say this buy what ever it is I think I will buy it unless it's a Ipod. I have a Sony 816 and it rocks the crap out of any Ipod on the market, and it's open source. I don't know why anyone would buy an Ipod for the sound? I can understand if you have a Mac and you want to stay all with Apple, but the Ipod sounds pretty bad compared to all the Mp3 Players out there now.
In short please let it be a new Mini, I need a good Media Hub that doesn't sound like a Turbo Prop (Sony PS3). But if it's a MacBook in the sub $1000 dollar area, I could be swayed.

In my opinion, I think that such an event wouldn't be too difficult for Apple. Introducing new iPods is fairly simple, they just release them into the shops, and if it turns out there is something wrong they just tell people to send them back for a replacement. It's not like mobile me where Apple was catastrophic in rolling it out, as with mobile me Apple kept getting it wrong each time they tried to fix the problems.
However, i'm not sure if Apple could cope with releasing a load of new macs as well. If they had problems Apple would be well and truly Daffy Ducked.

Right on.

I think everyone is looking at what has transpired and is interpreting it incorrectly.
Release of the iphone 3g, (which is only really a polishing of a previous product) and the Mobileme service, was enough to cause massive difficulties in apple's usually streamlined production/distribution? Most people have observed, and decided that if these problems were present for the launch of one product and one service, there is no way they could handle the diversity of updating all of their lines simultaneously, but i beg to differ.
I think, that the problems that surfaced with Mobileme, and the iPhone 3g are indicative of a greater diversification of efforts unbeknownst to the public. That these problems indicate they were stretching themselves thinner then, than we knew about.
Perhaps not in two weeks, and perhaps not all at once, and even perhaps not in the embodiement that I suggest, but I believe apple is restructuring their entire line.
As a result of the popularization of the nettop, the introduction of a full featured mobile device (iphone) as well as revolutionary advances in touch input, the needs of the different markets have changed.
I feel as though we will see a convergence of some lines and divergence of others. Below is one embodiment that I feel is likely to develope, all at once, or over time.
Notebooks
Convergence of MB and MBP into one line, differentiated by features connected to size. Essentially those who need more portability need less features typically. The high end will be the larger laptops. Pro's who typically need dedicated graphics and large screens are willing to carry a heavier laptop, those who need to take notes in a lecture hall dont need as much, however to a certain extent they will be configurable across the size
Possible convergence as well of the MBA; resulting in a this poridge is really small, this poridge is pretty small, and this poridge is bigger, but powerful.
Ipod
Refresh in line with current rumors; new ipod touch, new nano, price cuts
New product:
A tablet in line with that one patent, that shows it docking with an imac desktop. With its own processor ports etc, that when docked can improve the imac performance but when absent does not cripple either. This tablet could be used for any number of purposes, a multitouch surface when doing work on the desktop, a remote for itunes, as well as a full touch enabled computer when necesary on the go. With the ability to turn into a mac mini-esque (in terms of power) when connected to an external monitor
This would also necessetate an imac refresh.
Pro desktop line
little changes; increase in speed processor etc...
Displays
Revamp including the rumored isight hd, as well as divergence of the line. With and without apple tv integration. This integration will bring true tuner features, as well as expansion of the wireless mantra: ability to stream media to and from the display (which is actually now a television). Again with remote ability from iphone or tablet.
All tied together with expanded functionality of itunes/timemachine/mobile me
allowing for true decentrilized service of data/multimedia across the home. The ability to append libraries remotely, access documents or emails at the tv, on the iphone, with the tablet, at the desktop, or at the laptop. All able to synchronize quickly and efficiently, with secure backups kept for safety.
Now I have excluded the mini, because i cannot even guess what form it will take, unchanged, absorbed by the tablet and apple tv's increased functionality, or some other change, I have no idea.
Please realize these are guesses made by my personal observations of the changing mobile computing market, as well as the rumors floating about the net.
I just feel that the 3g update to the iphone, and the release of mobileme was not enough to stretch apples resources that thin. I think the mistakes portend of a revamp of the entire business' structure; a new delineation of products for a new market.
These are all giant revamps I understand, but at least now it seems once again feasible to own one of each product (since there is little or no overlap in functionality anymore). You have one device for your phone, one is a tablet for when you have more room but are on the go (class, meetings etc) one is a true laptop (in various sizes) for travel, one is the home computer, and one is your television. And the best part, is they all can function independently, but it's so much nicer that they all play well together.
Just my thoughts.

I am of the opinion that convergence is not likely to happen on the Mac side as it would disrupt the product stratification that we have now and have had for quite some time.
The iBook/MacBook and PowerBook/MacBook Pro have long addressed two separate markets with two separate price-points and feature-sets. If Apple indeed moves to nVidia, their integrated GPUs are much stronger so that should address much of the complaints tossed at the current MacBook models and their Intel GMA units.
If Apple does launch a 13" MacBook Pro model with the extra features (FW800, ExpressCard, etc.) to replace the MacBook line and serve as the replacement for the 12" PowerBook, it would need to have a price tag of around $1799 with the 2.4GHz CPU, LED back-lit panel and a 200GB HDD / Superdrive. That's $300 more then the "BlackBook" (with a smaller HDD) and $700 more then the entry-level MacBook. That is a pretty steep jump.
I do, however, believe tt will likely happen on the iPod side with the termination of the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle. The 4GB Nano can drop to $99 and replace the shuffle. The 8GB can drop to $149 and they can release a 16GB model at $199. The 8GB Touch will disappear and the 16GB will drop to $299 and the 32GB to $399.

I agree. I can't see Apple moving away from offering an entry-level laptop. Whether they officially collapse the two lines into a single name, they still need to have a low-end model and a high end-model, differentiated by price and features. And also I disagree with the speculation that the MB and MB Air will be collapsed into a single product; these also address different market segments and feature requirements.
I do, however, believe tt will likely happen on the iPod side with the termination of the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle. The 4GB Nano can drop to $99 and replace the shuffle. Wow, I would never consider the Nano to be a replacement for the Shuffle. In a situation where I can have 250-350 songs on a postage stamp-sized gizmo, why would I want the overhead of carrying around a video screen if I don't care about video? The Shuffle is perfect the way it is for what it does.
And I would not want to see the Touch replace the Classic unless Apple a) dramatically improves the Touch's music interface, and b) offers significantly more storage (32GB won't cut it).

They've been leaking proof for months!
... that's ridiculous if they are leaving obtuse clues for people in their ads for months.
Hmm. Like the Illuminati leaving their pyramid-eye on dollar bills...

september 9th is the date (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=551595)
iPhones have always been pictured with the date as Tuesday 9th. Unfortunately it's referring to Tuesday 9th January 2007, the day they first showed the iPhone to the world. :(

Has anyone thought about Snow leopard 10.6. Could they be releasing so many new computer products at this event. Because they will all be running snow leopard? Or maybe because the hardware will be fully optimized to run snow leopard when it comes out.
I hope that blu-ray becomes a standard option. Or at least a CTO option.
Any Developers out there wanna chime in on whether or not apple could of already completed snow leopard? After all they did surprise us with the intel switch. I mean osx was already coded for intel.

I'm more and more starting to be inclined that we will see two special events.
one on the 9th of September for iPods and other stuff relating iPods/iPhones.
And one on the 26th of September or 7th of October for MacBooks/MacBooks Pro.
I don't see it all happening in one event. I might be wrong but I haven't seen a special event yet where they introduced computers and iPods side by side.
Even if they did choose too do it in one single event. I would find such action to be in total lack of public safety. Just think of all the drool that will be spilled, I foresee a lot of dehydrated people. ;).
So incase they do, bottle-up people we'll be needing it :D

Snow Leopard is not due until some time next year. There is no reason it will not run on all of the Intel machines.
I believe there is still debate over whether or not Power PC support will be dropped or not.

Snow Leopard won't be released until around June 2009. I can see another preview at MWSF 2009, maybe with a few surface level features (like a GUI change) to entice users to buy it.
Or maybe because the hardware will be fully optimized to run snow leopard when it comes out. More likely, and fits in with the H.264 chips and that stuff.

Shouldn't the bottom and top of the screen be the other way? That way seems backwards...
Isn't that the way the iPod touches go, or is it either way you flip it.

The 2.0 update allowed it to be either way now.
If Apple adds an Accelerometer to the Nano, which they likely will if the design is what we have been hearing, then it will likely work either way as well.

Hey Jojo,
16 and 18 inch screen with 1920x1080:
http://gizmodo.com/367053/acers-blue-ace-aspire-gemstone-blue-notebook
16 incher from Sony
http://gizmodo.com/5025169/sony-vaio-fw-and-sr-series-first-164+inch-notebook-macbook+style-keyboards
And you're right, absolutely no-one could build a 15 inch laptop for under $1000. Oh yeah, except every other major computer manufacturer. Those components all come from the same places, chips from intel, lcd's, optical drives, hard drives, RAM, etc. There is no magic here, it is possible. If Apple wants to take back more market share they will have to compete on price someday.
Hey people chill out
I'm not saying it is impossible, I'm just saying Apple wouldn't do it cause the Macbook Pro sales would almost die
A lot of people buy the MBP just for the bigger screen and the metal.
So, I know that all the rands offer 15 inches laptop for 1000$( even less)
but that's not Apple case.
And for the 18 inches ... Apple never jump on new technologies like this one
They wait and then if they see that it has potential, then they adopt it

I also don't see iWork and iLife until January, but September would be exactly a year since the last release. Which is fine by me if it'll garner more resources for Apple to make them great releases post iPhone 2 frenzy.
Since Apple's enterprise market share is increasing, I for one would like to see an iWork for Windows (at least a viewer). I work in a mixed platform environment where we have a lot of docs in Word format and, while I could convince the powers that be that they be converted into another format, it would need to be something that is equally editable on Windows and Mac (extra points for Linux). I've long been a proponent of ODF, but Microsoft owns the office world, sadly.
Being able to save natively in other formats would be a great thing, but I also don't see this happening. It's theoretically possible though. Since Microsoft finally released a lot of the spec for the old binary .doc format and .docx is openly available. Again though, I'd much prefer OpenDocument.

September would be a good time of year to release iLife 09, as it's the student buying season, but then again, Apple isn't exactly famous for being timely. More likely than not they'll miss the back to school crowd and lose sales, and it'll be out in Jan.

That is the most gorgeous computer I have ever seen. Would love to see Apple take some cues and put this design to the Air.

At least we know when the 2.1 iPhone/iTouch firmware will be released, likely sans 3rd party pushing and background pushing. Personally, I don't really need all of those "pushy" features that Apple had originally planed for 2.1. What I think everyone needs, however, is stability (and for the 3G users out there, a connection bandwidth bug fix). The iPhone 3G is turning into a PR nightmare for Apple, so bug fixes cannot come fast enough.
I do like the Nano mockup above--nice rending job! If Apple could throw in a high-DPI 480*320 screen, it would certainly help the nano in terms of video playback. Of course, a lot of people will claim the new nano design is "Zuney," but if it works, it works. I doubt that Apple will put an accelerometer and the iPhone OS on the nano, however. That would require a touch digitizer and a crystal screen (rather than a plastic one). I bet the video display will simply turn sideways when the user plays a video; music will retain the portrait orientation. And I also don't know if the MBP will be super-thin like the Air, considering the massive amount of heat GPUs put out, there needs to be space for lots of fans (but again, it is a pretty looking render). If it were super thin, Apple would have to ditch the GPU entirely and go with (blegh!) the X3100 graphics deccelerator.

Looks hot! I thought the rumors, based on the aluminum case photos, that MBP would be going Aluminim frame still.
