Here's a petition for Apple to add Dolby 5.1 hardware to their future products:

I signed it, hopfully Apple already has this planned for the new motherboard in the next PowerMac. Lets see, DDR memory, faster bus, and surround sound. Sounds good to me.

Yeah, I'd love to use my 4.1 speakers that I use on my PC on my Mac...under OS X.

It's so sad that the only option for surround sound is the Creative card, with it's crappy drivers.

Come on people, sign up!:)

I signed it, but I was wondering if we'll ever get to see any results? Are you going to follow this and maybe let us know what happens?

I just emailed the guy who posted the petition.

It should just be there (5.1 support I mean)
A machine that has a DVD onboard without is crippled on the sound level.

I got a reply from the guy running the petition:

The petition should be over when Mac World New York happens. I dont' know if
I will get a reply back from apple or not. I plan on sending the petition to
them and resending it till I get a reply I hope. Thanks for your interest.

Well, I am number 1542. I don't really think that they will listen, but who knows. I know that I personally would love to see them do it. Question thought. Is there not a solution for this made by a third party now?

This whole petition is a small potatos, unfortunately. Apple has to be aware with the lack of Audio support, but they're basically rebuilding their machines to fit the market. It will only be a matter of time before we see something, I'm not holding my breath.

Yes and no. Creative has a sound card for the Mac that provides 4.1 support...but they haven't made any drivers for OS X.

I don't know of any other cards out there that are consumer oriented...
