I've created an app and hardware add-on for iphone which will allow you to blow into hardware add-on (while attached to data port) and view results on iphone and ipod. I'm up to the point where i need to sync both the software and hardware but am not sure of the API and interface of the data ports. For a project like this, will i need apple's permission. In other words, does anyone know how to sync third party hardware with the iphone/ipod?

It's not possible(at this time)* to interact with IO ports so creating hardware is not possible.

*SDK wise and not jailbreaking.

hmmm, the hardware is setup i just need a manufacturer familiar with mobile phones to actually sync the hardware and software, similar to the way i've done the prototype using windows and a USB. Do you know any other phones i might be able to do this with? Is apple planning on allowing developers create hardware add-ons?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

I am sure you could do this on a windows mobile phone. It's never going to happen on the iPhone.

Would it be naive to believe that I could get rights from Apple that would allow me to sync through their cooperation

Also, would something like this work if i used wireless or bluetooth to send results from hardware to the iphone, instead of having it "sucked" into iphone from the data cable.

I'm sure if you were a legit company you could license the necessary tools to work with the iPhone IO.

Bluetooth isn't accessible through the SDK but you could have your hardware talk to the iPhone via wifi.

--I am a legit company, obviously i'm a start up company not pfizer, so i don't know how Apple deals with people attempting to get licensing agreements with small players. always a possibility.

WiFi is an interesting alternative and something i will look into. Thank you.

Any other advice from the board?
