A true hero to the GLBT community has passed (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/08/27/lesbian.activist.dies/index.html). She truly was a remarkable woman.
Lesbian activist Del Martin, at the forefront of the battle for same-sex marriage in California, died Wednesday in San Francisco. She was 87.

Martin's partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon, was by her side at the UCSF hospice, the National Center for Lesbian Rights said.

Martin and Lyon, 84, tied the knot June 16 in a ceremony officiated by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

"Ever since I met Del 55 years ago, I could never imagine a day would come when she wouldn't be by my side. I am so lucky to have known her, loved her and been her partner in all things," Lyon said. "I also never imagined there would be a day that we would actually be able to get married.

"I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed."

That SUCKS. :( But at least they got to tie the knot before she died.

I know. You can see how much that simple act meant to her.

And you know what? It didn't harm my marriage one bit!

Not to bring politics into such a sad moment, but hell, it is the Politics forum!

Your last statement here should give a lot of the proponents of gay marriage in California a lot of leverage come November. If a couple like this can live and die, and their marriage didn't harm or hurt anyone else's marriage, there is no room for gay marriage opponents to talk, let alone a soapbox for them to stand on.

Truly a wonderful woman to whom the gay community owes a great deal to. Hopefully her labors will not have been in vain.

I actually think it's going to go in our favor.

Sad.

It's hard to see any positives when great people go, but I'm very happy she got to marry her parter.

RIP.
