I just came across it in the App Store and this just made my night! :D Anyone know much about it? For $10 I'm really considering this one.

I have $15 to the App Store and I've been holding out for a while now for the November release of Need For Speed Underground. Opinions?

iTunes Link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=289651516&mt=8

Hopefully that works.

It looks great, really - but I will no doubt be waiting on reviews. If they can't get the 4th picture to work correctly - at least for me - then that makes me feel like I should give this one some time in the wild before a purchase.

Beat to it twice. I need to be speedier - I can never beat Arn. :p

Never mind now - the picture works too. (Ferrari = Great; a car NFS lacks) I was surprised to see Asphalt. I just happened to be looking at the Racing game section like I always do to check for anything new, and Boom, in the words of Steve. I was thrilled to get this up here when I saw the August 29th release date.

I've noticed (consistently over many nights now), that if you search in the late evening on the "All iPhone Apps" page, this will show you the *new* apps:

click onto page "2 of ...", then click back to "1 of ...". Guaranteed, you will see a different page 1 than you just saw seconds ago, with all the new apps listed.

Why is this "fail"? Sorry for the rude awakening, but MOST games don't come with demos. Even renting a console game at Blockbuster or whatever costs money. It's really not right to judge a game's value before you play it...for all we know, this game could worth 10x its cost, or a tenth of the cost. But judging from how large the app is in terms of MB, and how good the graphics look, i'd say it's easily worth $10 if it plays even anywhere near how it looks.

I kind of watched videos of other device formats for this game, and their HD version that looks similar to the iPhone, even same splash screen.

They all seem to be full of action like sparks flying, cars flipping, bumping, boosting, hectic stuff. Though, they all had sluggish, choppy framerate that just made all that crazy stuff disorienting, considering you are trying to race at high speed.

I hope we get a video of the iPhone version to see if the framerate is a lot better. Is there a support link from the itunes page that gives a gameplay example?

All i have to say is...this game...ROCKS!

Great depth, from cars (and even motorcycles!) to tracks, customizations to game modes, and of course awesome graphics. I am extremely impressed...for $10.00, this game is one of the few apps in the AppStore that justify its price. Easily will provide 100 hours of fun for the money...if you guys have ever played the Gran Turismo or Need for Speed series for the consoles, you'll feel right at home :D

A very well done game that many others should follow!

I still think our expectations are automatically lowered when it comes to games on a phone, but I bought this and the graphics, framerate and overall gameplay are pretty decent. Still feels like 1999 graphics, but again, it's a phone game, which are understandably about 10 years behind.

I was surprised to see game terms like "road rage" and "take down". Is this game from the same people as the Burnout series?

Are you joking? I can download demos for just about every Xbox 360 game over Xbox Live. I can download demos for just about every PC game.

The barrier for entry to develop games on those platforms are much higher, too. Which means bigger development teams involved, more resources and time available to create a demo. Not the case with the iPhone, which allows a single person to create the most basic game and sell it in the App Store. Most of them are amateurs or doing it as a hobby, not actual professional development studios.

But I do agree that the professional development studios from developers such as the one that worked on Asphalt 4 should make it in their best interest to release a demo for their games. The only reason why they shouldn't is if they don't think their game is that great and fear that a demo would lose them sales. Otherwise, it'll benefit them financially.

But the infrastructure of iTunes easily allows demos. I don't care if it looks good because a screenshot won't tell me:
- if it runs at 10 frames per second
- if it crashes every 5 minutes
- if the controls are any good

Any of these 3 problems is a deal breaker. As you say, it's not right to judge a game's value before I play it. And a screenshot can't be played, unlike a demo version. ;)

wait until the "newness" wears off, and you'll get accurate reviews. As mentioned above...it's seriously dated, and not a whole lot of fun to be honest....but that's just my opinion. The "Pit Girls" make it even worse...freakin terrible graphics and incorporation.

I like it, it looks great for a mobile game, but I find the screen tap controls really fiddly. Would much prefer tilt control.

Also, I'd prefer simpler graphics if they could get the frame rate up a bit. I reckon the frame rate makes the biggest difference to a game feeling high quality.

For all you guys saying the game is 'dated' - to what standards of comparison are you basing that judgement on, especially when it comes to mobile phone games? Are you expecting realistic 3D graphics and 60 fps? I don't know the graphical limits of the iPhone, but it really can't be that much farther off from this game...

During a race, on the top left corner you'll see an icon with an arrow/fingertip, tap it to bring up the menu where you can drive with the accelerometer, a steering wheel, or the default tap to turn.

I myself don't need realistic graphics, nor textures for that matter, it could look like Virtual Racing for all I care, as long as the simulation for the driving is top notch, and other gameplay aspects being more up to date. The iPhone has kind of a PSP feeling going for it compared to a standard cell phone and related games, so I think expectations are a little higher, or the iPhone is just the first kind of next gen for cell gaming. So I hope in the future, companies won't only try to push graphics and not forget about gameplay.

I sure hope this isn't a fake, but a totally different type of racing game than Asphalt:

Good point, but it doesn't update very fast (like, hours and hours later). I just tested it to see, and things that show only by using the back button aren't in the list.

Yes, happened to me as well. This has happened before when I had many apps loaded, and the other thing that happens at the same time is no media appears on the iPhone, although there is much media present.

For me, I connected the iPhone to the Mac, and in iTunes went to the "Applications" tab. I unchecked Asphalt, along with several other applications. I synched the iPhone, so these apps were removed from the iPhone. I also "de-authorized" the iTunes from the iTunes Music Store, then re-authorized. I shut down the iPhone and restarted, and the remaining apps work just fine. :-)

I re-installed Asphalt and all is well (for now).

I think the issue is related to how many apps are installed on the iPhone, and maybe how much space they take.

Enjoy!

3 questions about the game:

1. When using the accelerometer steering mode, is tilting my phone forward accelerating the car or using the nitro? If it's using the nitro is it any different then touching the nitro button. Does it just accelerate on it's own?

2. On one of the videos of the game it shows someone touching the nitro button and it shows 1x, 2x, 3x on the screen. Do you tap the nitro button mutiple times to get higher levels of nitro boost? or do you just hold it down until the nitro is used up?

3. In the options is the button that says: "more games" or something similar. If i hit the button it brings up a blank screen with the spinning waiting for something indicator, then it just goes to my "desktop". Is this normal?

1. push forward accelerates, a quick push forward activates the nitro, as in the video link. I tilt forward to accelerate and use the nitro button. you can change as it suits you.

2. Do you tap the nitro button mutiple times to get higher levels of nitro boost?
yes

3. more games brings up the box your talking about, with the spinny thing then shows me a few games titles in coverflow design from the company.

Fact:

The graphics can be great
The controls can be great
Framerate can be great

and the game could suck...

In this case, I think the graphics are good, controls are good, framerate is okay, but really this is a fun game. I think we spend way too much time talking about these games technically (which is also important, don't get me wrong) than talking about how fun they are. I personally believe the game is worth $7.99 so if that is an endorsement or not, great, but it IS a fun game. (at least to me)

Racing games (on any platform) usually don't hold my attention--I never like the controls. I found the control feel on this was fun--even when I wasn't any good yet. Enough fun to make race again.

I find it interesting that on their Support Web Site, the price is listed as: From $4.00* and it says
* Prices may vary according to your carrier.
The experience may be different by handset.

I wonder why it's so much higher for the iPhone. Because it's new? Not because of Apple's 30% surcharge. That would still make it come to < $10.

Both Rome and Hawaii have messed up skies. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Also, does the internet play only work for people on the same wireless network? Or is it some huge network in which people can play each other from all over? (Which would be currently down.)

Also, is Need for Speed really coming to the iPhone? If so, when?

Can't answer that first part as I'm not sure, but yes, Need For Speed Undercover should be coming to the iPhone in mid November. :)

There is tilt as well as steering wheel control.

Thanks! You've made the game much better for me.:) I really hated the screen-tap controls. I'm still coming in last, but there is time to improve!

Great game. But when I play multiplayer, 95% of the time one of us gets a "connection lost" message. Don't know why. We're on a high power wireless router here. Sucks tho.

Can anyone get Vs to work. I cannot get past the betting screen. and also once you get gold in all the levels you cannot place again nor make anymore money, do i have that right.

Doing VS is obvious. Just select a bet, click back, hit the race tab, and hit Race. All there is to it. Got 100% in the game on my third day. I've never gotten anything lower than 1st place, the game is so easy.

Almost through the game, and short of a few crashes, this one was worth every cent. Might be dated to some, but I think the dev team did a great job putting this together.

Now here is a really dumb question, and I know it so there's really no point in flaming me. Also, I'm 77 years old, so I've heard it all!

I've had no problem in running this game on my first generation iphone, and the graphics are great. Nevertheless, I can't figure out what the game actually is, which is why I agree with the posters here that a good demo would help. It's described as a racing game, but racing doesn't really seem to be the object. In a race, one tries to go at top speed, and this means avoiding collisions. You apparently can't go far in this game with mere speed. Are you supposed to hit other cars? If so, which cars should you hit and which cars should you avoid? What else should you do other than go fast?

Thats an excellent point. I too found it pointless, but my 5 yr old son enjoys it so I guess it's not a total loss.

Hit the other racers to get "takedowns" (take them out of the race) which builds up your nitro so you can then go faster, avoid all other traffic.

I don't actually have the game but from other similar games i believe that's how it works.

There are five different types of races:

Race - Goal is to be first
Duel - You bet money against one other car to be first
Cop Chase - You're the cop (with a flashing red light and annoying siren) and you have to knock out the first place "bad guy" (with the skull 'n bones above the car)
Cash Attack - You get money for jumps, knocking out other cars, etc.
Beat 'Em All - You have to run six other cars off the road

I've really loved playing this game over the past week and a half. It has a ton of cars to earn and drive through the various cities. Personally, it's the best game I've played on the iPhone and don't regret forking over the $10 for it.
