iTunes doesnt read iPhone 2g

ok i just bought the 1st gen iphone from a friend just to unlock it and give it to another friend of mine. but when i plug the iphone to my mac, it reads it but doesnt show up in iTunes. any help? is this a problem i can fix on my own?

Did you try a hard rest of the phone? If not, do it.

Next, when you need assistance concerning software it is useful to pony up some information first:

Mac or PC
What OS?
What version of iTunes?
Are you connected via USB? (this isn't as obvious as some may think)
Are you connected via a USB hub or directly into your machine?
Does the phone turn on at all?

mac osx 10.5.2 and the most recent version of itunes. my friend just got here with the phone and its black and letts going up n down saying unable to load firmware and its not showing up in my itunes either.
