iTunes-LAME or iTunes LAME plug-in

Sorry for being a bit thick, but I'm not understanding if I should use iTunes-LAME or install the LAME plug-in for iTunes instead? Is there some major differences or advantages/disadvantages that I'm missing?

just to be clear, when I refer to LAME plugin I'm referring to this:

Is it really I plugin or not, I don't know, that's just what someone else on the forum referred to it as... to be honest I'm not sure exactly what it is (I'm new to Mac world).

I want to rip my CDs in a compressed format so that I can squeeze as many as possible onto my iPod (otherwise I would use lossless)
